I think an R rating might put the potential involvement of Jackie Chan into jeopardy. Pretty sure he only makes family friendlier action stuff these days. I could be wrong, though.
Well The Foreigner was rated R, so I don't think that the rating would be a problem.

Arrow

1.) Pick a core group, and focus on them. It doesn't really accomplish anything if you pack the movie with 20 old-timers, and most of them have only a walk-on and a line or two.

2.) Earn that title by actually killing some characters. Crews' fake-death in 3 was terribly handled.

3.) These movies have never felt authentic. They look and feel like modern action movies, just with a throwback cast. They should be filmed, lit, and edited in '80s style. And to go with that:

4.) R-rating, and practical FX, please.

EX4 desperately needs to ditch the self-parody - it is what brought the previous films down. (Too many forced lines: "I'll be back... No ill be back.... Who's next, Rambo?.... Chuck Norris jokes... Yippie-ki-yay...) That all needs to go. Have humor, yes, but also be a serious movie. For as silly as 80s action movies were, they did take themselves seriously. They also need to get away from recurring cameo roles. Just put Schwarzenegger, Willis and Jet Li in the dang movie as leads if you want to keep using them. It's distracting when they walk in for a few minutes to utter some terrible forced dialogue.

A great villain is also necessary. Eric Roberts was lame. Van Damme a great choice. Gibson - fantastic (too bad he was wasted on Ex3).

At least Sly has admitted that bringing in younger actors and ditching the R-rating for the last film was a mistake.

@Zillamon51 and mjvmovieman: Comments are right on the money. I will add something else, a killer soundtrack that actually makes you wanna get up and start cheering. Jerry Goldsmith is gone, but listen to his Rambo 2 and 3 scores and then to the Expendables ones and it's just not the same. Make it a serious movie and let the humour flow from cool, and brand new, catchphrases and funny situations rather than parody or regurgitating what came before. I mean, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are funnier than most comedies and still 100% thrilling.

As a Stallone fan, I have enjoyed these movies more than the average moviegoer, they're not great movies but they're fun to watch. I hope the 4th one will happen, it would be nice if they polished the script more than their guns (both metal & flesh ), but I'll be there on opening weekend.

They Need Bruce Campbell in this movie. The fact he wasn't in the first 3 is unexceptable.

Quote:
The Expendables 4 Officially Confirmed

As reported the fourth Expendables movie has gotten the go-ahead after Millennium Films struck an all-important deal with with exhibitors Dadi for Chinese distribution rights. Deadline reports an early 2019 start date for the film.

The plot and cast details for the next Expendables movie are being kept under wraps, but Stallone hinted at a comeback for the franchise earlier this year. Local media has reported that the movie will return to Bulgaria to shoot.

Keep it with the veterans this time. Focusing so much on the uninteresting no-name young guns in Part 3 kinda took some of the fun out of it. Refocus on the old guard and keep the action old school, and it should be good.

They tried that in the third one, and people didn't like the long segment in the middle with the "new" Expendables. People want to see Sly, Stath, Lundgren & Jet kick ass.
