It's a terrific "proto-noir" with stunning cinematography and a gut-punch call-to-arms in the early days of World War II. |

Revisited Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train last night and holy crap, the film is a masterpiece from start to finish (would compare the tautness of its plot to the Coens' neo-noir Blood Simple, also a film I consider to be perfect). The way the film builds and protracts the suspense throughout the final half-hour is immense, leading up to the heart-palpitating climax on the merry-go-round. There are master shots throughout the film, such as this one:

Strangers on a Train is a great film.
Just finished watching 24 Hitchcocks in the month of August (23 Region A BD + Suspicion on DVD). Shadow of a Doubt was my favorite, followed by Strangers on a Train, Rebecca, Suspicion and Vertigo. I would consider all good examples of film noir with the possible exception of Rebecca. |

Rebecca makes use of several conventions that would later become standard in film noir (flashbacks, voiceover narration, shadowy visuals, etc.). |

You expressed it better than I could Owl, but I agree the style of Rebecca is what strikes me as film noir. What raises doubt to me with Rebecca as film nor has more to do with the plot, like a lot of Hitchcocks. That is, the romantic stuff and the happy ending.

Is anyone else really surprised that this is the second noir from Warner Archive? Don't get me wrong; I'm happy it's getting a blu-ray release. But I would have thought that several other films would have been ahead of this one in the queue.

I can see your point, but I'm not certain that it's a question of genre. I'm wondering if WA will be trying to balance star power. I mean, in a fairly short amount of time they've announced a Cagney and a Crawford.

That could be, but in terms of Crawford films, I would think that Mildred Pierce would be ahead of Possessed in terms of name recognition.

It will probably be a long while before I'm able to retire a lot of my Warner film noir DVDs, though, because most of them come in the five Warner Film Noir Classic Collection box sets that I own. My DVD of Out of the Past is staying put in that box set. |
