The problem with reboots is they used to reboot a movie that didn't do well but had good material, in an attempt to get it right, such as The Maltese Falcon. Now they reboot great movies in an attempt to cash in on the name recognition without even truly understanding what made it great in the first place.

I'm all for continuing the adventures of Indiana Jones with a new actor, but remaking Raiders of the Lost Ark would most likely turn out no better than RoboCop, Total Recall, or Vacation. I don't think any of those remakes will ever be considered classics as the originals are.

There's another thread about Indy 5. This is about the next one after that.

I'm also happy to see a last Indy film with Harrison Ford coming out-- I know some people cry "Stop!" when they do a bad one, but I've never understood that. If anything, I always had the attitude that now they HAVE to make another one, so the Indy films don't end with a disappointing entry.

Now, if they end up making TWO bad films, then I would say Spielberg just doesn't know how to make a good Indy film anymore and it should be handed over to someone else that can do it, like with Star Wars.

I'm not supportive of this reboot, but at least we are getting another Indy with Ford back full time to give the character as we know it proper closure.

So it's funny to see all the complaints when we praise so many as classics. The remakes, if they're good, can sit hand in hand with the original. Another good example of that is Ocean's Eleven.

Also, there's plenty of original ideas if you're looking for them. More than branded IPs and known names...they vastly outnumber the sequels, reboots, and remakes that are released every year.
I didn't know the 1959 Ben Hur was a remake of anything. I agree that some remakes are good but many are very bad. (Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Clash of the Titans) But here we aren't talking about a remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom or The Last Crusade, it's just pumping more juice out of a dry lemon, I still remember how bad KotCS was and don't expect the fifth will be any better. Harrison Ford is over 70 don't you think he's getting too old for this? Spider-Man came out in 2002, it was rebooted in 2012 and now it's getting re-rebooted in 2017, this is just ridiculous. I don't mind a good remake once in a while but today every franchise are rebooted all over again and beside a few exceptions (Nolan's batman for example) most aren't better than the previous franchise. Star Wars The Force Awakens was great it brought nostalgia to the die hard fans of the franchise but I don't expect episode VIII or IX to be better than any of the original three movies, some franchises should remain untouched but I guess it's too late with Indiana Jones since they already released the piece of garbage KotCS is.

If we're getting one more with Harrison, then I am a-okaywith a reboot afterwards.

I would've loved if they had made a tonne of Indy films in the past and future with Ford, but I understand why it didn't happen, and I can understand Ford not wanting or being able to do more (whatever the reasons)

I'm thankful for the ones we have and the last one we will be getting with Ford, hell maybe he will make a cameo appearance in the future reboots, I will watch them just for that alone!

He didn't really seem all that solid on the exact meaning of the r-word, though.

I could see a Bond-like 'soft reboot' with each actor having their own mini-continuity in a larger, more flexible continuity.

The times they are a-changing.

Studios are now announcing reboots just before they start filming a sequel to the original series.

Not true in the slightest. Many "great" films were remade (not "rebooted"), it wasn't just ones that underperformed. In fact, it's more the case that the good films were more often remade, because they always knew the story was good. In the case of The Maltese Falcon, the source material was a book, not a previous movie.

More ridiculous than the Bond films changing actors every 4-5 films? Or the Batman movies doing the same after 2-3 films? The new Spider-Man isn't a reboot, they aren't re-telling the origin, it's essentially just a new actor a la Bond. Hardly ridiculous. We've had 8 Batman films since 1989 and 5 different actors playing him, THAT's riduiculous.

I hear what you're saying but every now and then we get a Mad Max Fury Road which proves that reboots/ belated sequels CAN work and not only match the originals but actually be better than any that came before.

However there is only one George Miller and I attribute the quality of that movie to him.

And the book was so popular, they rebooted the movie twice until they got it right, and haven't rebooted it since. (I think they did try to make it a TV series though.) They knew they had good material and hadn't done it justice.

All I was saying is that some reboots are a legitimate attempt to improve upon or continue something worthwhile and others are just trying to cash in on the popularity of a recognized brand with little regard to what made the original great.

Ha! You guys are so hilarious. I'm assuming the joke is that women and LGBT people are getting more visibility in movies now, so now every white male character is in danger of getting recast. Oh dear!
Well, I don't think you have to worry with this one, but who knows?
