How does it not make sense? If you can't be the preeminent team in your own conference (under the present system, playoff could be different as O_V_N suggested), then how can you claim to be the preeminent team over all conferences as a national champion? And as far as some conferences not having championships, I believe they still rank the teams in those conferences according to in-conference wins, right? If you can't finish #1 in your conference one way or the other, how can you claim to be the NC? All IMO.

I haven't given it a lot of thought, but I think the way to do it is to take the top 8-16 teams from the BCS, and do a playoff from there.

If you lose your conference but still ended up 11-1, defeating a bunch of good opponents, you might still earn a spot in the BCS polls.

If you win the Big East with an 8-4 record and lost to 3 miserable OOC opponents, you might not earn a spot.

Yes, you could theoretically end up with 2 Big 10 teams, 2 SEC teams, 2 Big 12 teams, and 2 Pac 10 teams, or some other mixture, but what can you do.

That's my 2-minute, 2 cents.
I see what you were driving at. Good idea because it would still incorporate the BCS's every-game-matters idea while allowing for a playoff. Thanks for explaining.

You're right about the conferences without championship games (e.g., Big 10, Pac 10). Champ is decided by win-loss record in the conference (with various tie-breakers).

So, shall I be the first (I think) to ask:

What are your predictions for Tennessee/Florida? I think the Gators are favored by 30, but I think the Vols will put up a little fight. I'm going 38-13.

Let's hear 'em.

BCS bowl for them this year.

But still, I cant help but notice that they cant even fill up half the stadium for a top 20 match up. what a terribly small fan base.

Are they seriously favored by 30?

That might be a record for this matchup.

Oh man, don't quote me on that. I swear I heard 30 somewhere. I'll try to double check.

Haven't seen the current spread, but it was 30 on Monday. I heard on the radio that the spread last year was 7 1/2, and Florida won by 24. This is one of the few times I'll root for Florida, I'd love to see Kiffin's reaction to a beatdown. Thing is I didn't have a problem with Kiffin in the NFL and think he was wronged by Al Davis but his behavior at Tennessee has been pathetic. You don't accuse other coaches of rules violations publicly under any circumstances, but you really don't if they aren't actually breaking any rules.

I wish they could both lose, but given the circumstances, I hope Tennessee wins, only because Florida has the easiest road to a NCG the world has ever witnessed.

That said, two years in a row Florida has slaughtered Tennessee. With the way Florida runs up the score, and the bad blood because of Kiffin's antics, I expect that if you are a betting man, take Florida. 28 points is a gimme.

63-21 Florida. Expect another 59-20 type b*tch slapping like 2007.

Home game, new bad blood, Florida is a better team, and Tennessee is worse than 2007. This game is no contest.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't a win over 3 Touchdowns.

I wish I could argue, but I can't. That is about how I see it shaking out. The defense doesn't stand a chance after the offense gives arguably the best team in the nation the short field all day long with turnovers and three-and-outs. I haven't seen a QB look that terrible since last year. Oh wait, it is the same guy.

I don't know if I would take Virginia against any FBS team, and wouldn't take them against a lot of FCS teams. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Al Groh is going to get fired before the end of the season. I was surprised he wasn't fired after last year.

That happens almost everywhere when teams take a step back in production, If I'm not mistaken last year was one of the first years the Big House had a drop in fans in the stadium. The sad fact is almost everywhere now people are bandwagon fans, where I go to school(UMD) its like that miami game but if they start winning you can't find seats.

I'm going to be curious how Cal does tomorrow playing at Minnesota at noon eastern. Last year when they played a noon game versus Maryland they got whipped right away. I'm surprised (and bewildered by) Cal agreeing to play a non conference game at noon. That is 9 am Cal time and they aren't used to playing at that time, especially when it means they'll likely be waking up around 4 am their time. I see Cal traveled to Minnesota yesterday though. When they played at Maryland they didn't come until Friday and had to immediately go to bed.
