So they can claim that the 4K edition "contains all three cuts" but it could be two of those cuts are on the blu ray.
From the press release:

"Both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray versions will feature all three versions of the movie and the original restored 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio."

It spells it out as clear as day. I don't see any room for confusion. That would be a huge play on words if the 4k release didn't include all 3 versions in 4k.

So happy to hear Sony is doing this right. I'm not sure I need the gift set though - it just doesn't seem to offer enough to make it worthwhile.

it maybe not an official Dolby Cinema grading, but getting to see this on a 4K laser system is making me ultra giddy with excitement.

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't see how people are still thinking that this is unclear. They went out of their way to make it clear. The only way I would get the gift set is if that were the only way to get all three cuts. Nearly twice the price for a box that lights up and a booklet? No thanks.

Well I just found out last night that "Close Encounters" will be playing down the street at my local theater, that my daughter works part time at. I couldn't believe it. We're going to go Sept. 2nd. Last time I stepped in a theater was 2005 when I saw Spielberg's "War Of The Worlds". After that I got into the home theater scene and never looked back.

The theater it's playing in, features Ultrascreen DLX with Dolby Atmos, and powered recliners to sit in.....Man how things have changed the past 12 years. I have no clue what an Ultrascreen DLX is, but by the photos looks pretty nice not to mention I've never been in a theater with Dolby Atmos. Being a huge CEOTTK fan I figured this will be the last chance for me, and my family to see it on a large screen. 1977 was the first time I had seen it on the big screen. Can't wait.

Great, but CE3K does not have a new Atmos remix. You'll be hearing it in 5.1.

I could careless about whether it's 5.1 or 2.0 , All I care about, is the 3 story tall, 72ft wide screen it's going to be shown on. Because in 1977 the screen wasn't that big.

Sound is a huge component of this movie. Spielberg certainly cared.

At this point, as long as we can get something close to the original track, which this should be, I'm perfectly happy. Do we have to constantly remix every damned movie for whatever the new gee whiz audio format is?

having seen this in 1977 on Washington DC's second largest screen (the now closed KB Cinema) the fact that AMC is allowing this engagement on it's prime and largest screen at Tyson's Corner is quite remarkable in itself - I really thought they'd put it in another smaller auditorium - the image and colors are going to be immense - I snapped up my tickets yesterday too. I think once the run is done, this will finally allow the Smithsonian to book this on it's Lockheed Martin IMAX screen for it's weekly Sci-Fi Sunday series, I gather Sony was purposefully holding back in letting them not present it for this week long engagement.

Yes. Or it's a DEAL-BREAKER, and those greedy studios won't get a cent of my money, REGARDLESS of how good the release is otherwise!!!

Despite owning this on bluray I had zero idea there were 3 versions. Sorry if this has been answered previously, but can anyone sum up the differences? Which version is the best to watch etc. Special edition seems to be shorter than theatrical, and the other version is the longest. Thats about it for my knowledge.

For two days you've been banging on about how Sony hasn't given you this audio mix, despite giving you a gorgeous new transfer, new special features and a beautiful box set... and they're the greedy ones?

I'm assuming it's safe for me to sell that chunky anniversary edition blu ray that came with the little book in the slip box?

1. Please read an *entire* post before commenting on it.
2. I haven't once complained about the audio mix. I'm not even set up for Atmos. You have me mistaken for someone else.
3. Google "parody".

I plan on seeing this at my local AMC.

I read somewhere that the new theatrical reissue should be playing at around 800-1000 screens nationwide; unlike the Terminator 2 3D reissue which is only playing at AMC locations. Close Encounters is playing on a AMC BigD (Large Format Theater) screen near me and I'm very excited to see it not only in a theater, but huge.

Oops, you got me. I stopped reading before I got to your parenthetical. And yes, I confused you with someone else. I must've been tired when I replied to this.

Apologies

Looks like none of the 5 Showcase cinemas in my area are getting Close Encounters. Very frustrating because they are getting ET and Wrath of Khan among others. No AMC theatres anywhere in my area, which also means I miss out out on Terminator II 3D. Too bad because I would have loved to see Close Encounters on the big screen.
