The Brosnan films are what brought me back to Bond...and the Craig films just kept me on-board. Goldeneye is one of my favorite Bond movies (ever) and was directed by the same guy who did Casino Royale (probably my second favorite).

Or, no, as in, are you named Digiovanni, a guy I went to high school with (and the only FRWL naysayer I've ever met) who dismissed the film as Bond goes out to steal a typewriter?

Either way you're wrong.

Just rewatched it yesterday for the 20th (or more) time. Still the best Bond of the saga in my opinion. Everything is perfect.

The 4K wasn't a big improvement but the movie looks really good.

Started digging into my 4K set and getting ready for No Time To Die. Casino Royale wasn't a huge leap for me like it was when I upgraded my DVD to Blu-ray, but there's enough there to keep it satisfying enough. Minor DNR like one of those cooks who uses a razor to scrape eggs off a griddle. It's there but not egregious. I think the Dolby Vision color grading is great though. Some terrific blacks (the torture sequence) and some good highlights (the light peeking in during the final shootout) and it's not nearly as vivd and blown out like the Blu-ray was. It looks much more in line with how I remember it theatrically and it seems as if the original Blu had pumped up colors to showcase the format. Anyways, these are my thoughts for whatever they're worth. A decent presentation of my favorite Craigbond.

Got Casino Royale and Skyfall while they were on offer in Fopp/HMV yesterday. And watched Royale yesterday.

This is one weird UHD. Sometimes it works, other times it just feels it's not properly graded for HDR. Like they took a gamble on what was already there to translate into metadata. But things like the blacks are deep, but are bit to heavy, some push towards
cyan as well in the whites. The whole thing could just do with something approaching a rebuild specifically for HDR. As it just fundamentally looks like an SDR source shakened, not stirred in an HDR container.

HDR is not metadata.

That's changing how the display is tone mapping the source grade. HDR is not metadata.

I thought the DV layer was classed as metadata? Well on the brightside at least that's the only thing your having a go over with my analysis.

Also Skyfalls HDR is tasty. It's your Deakins grade sure, but me likes it's sleekness.

I've made my thoughts clear in my own analysis of these, we can only call them as we see them. But I hate the crushed blacks on Skyfall.

I'm not experiencing what I'd consider crushed blacks on Skyfall? I don't believe I read your thoughts on it or CR. CR certainly looked way more crushed to my eye What scenes in Skyfall are you referring to in particular where crush is concerned?

The black level has been badly clipped in Skyfall, I find the finale in the church unwatchable. Even the opening MGM logo shows it with a weird green tinge around it.

But CR's UHD has way lighter blacks and more shadow detail than as seen on the BD, so I don't think we're using the same definition of black crush here.

I went back to the MGM logo and haven't seen anything like that. I definitely would have spotted it first time cause of the green tinge round it. Now I could say this is an OLED panel doing better blacks, but surely a source with black crush is going to look worse cause of OLED.

I'll report back what I get to the finale.

I've no idea what you are seeing Geoff. But I watched Skyfall in cinema at least 7 times, and across multiple cinemas as well. None of them I thought were showing the ending accurately. This UHD does a bloody good job I'd say from my experience. Here's some crappy phone photo's that really pick up that blue tint.

The transfer of Skyfall on bluray is magnificent, perhaps it's the best looking BD out there.

I was a fan of the whole set but the church does look abhorrent in skyfall. Like unbelievably bad.

Seems to be lacking in bling for them, so it feels a bit half-hearted but, yeah, ordered it anyway.

I didn't know that was a thing. Would be very cool to get that.
