That's what I'm trying to figure out! Are all their movies "Old" Movies or what? I've never heard of either of these movies before! Someone please school me on what's so special about Criterion!

1. What is the Criterion Collection?

The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on home video. Our editions often feature restored film transfers, commentary tracks, and other supplemental features that the company pioneered when it released its first laserdiscs, Citizen Kane and King Kong, at the end of 1984. Ever since, Criterion has been working closely with filmmakers and scholars to ensure that each film is presented as its maker would want it seen and published in an edition that will deepen the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema.

Really, its a company that chooses old, artistic and foreign movies to produce for the US market. However, sometimes they do pick up the rights to something a bit commercial like "Benjamin button".

The main attraction for collectors is that they usually put binder numbers on the titles. The first on DVD was Seven Samurai so that had binder 1, then came along binder 2 etc. So people were buying the movies just to complete the collection.

In the DVD era I took note of it until it had reached 150 or so, but soon enough I just gave up since alot of the titles went OOP pretty quickly. Salo was often on ebay for $400 on DVD. I had both John Woo movies (Hard boiled, killer) that was another $200. I guess if you want to become a part of this elite collectors group thats ok, just stay on top of it or feel the pain of ebay. Thats all i'm saying. The problem is, would you like the movie that is number 45 on blu ray? Probably not.

Are they numbering the blu rays? I haven't paid attention for ages.

Yes - the spine number is the same as the DVD version.

That's a big mistake in my opinion. We will never have a COMPLETE Blu Ray set by using the same numbering system. They should have just started from scratch on the Blu Ray numbers........no way we will see The Killer, Sid and Nancy, Rebecca ETC.... from Criterion.

Got my copy of In the Realm of the Senses today. As Svet mentioned, it's a clear plastic case again. These cases are quality.

I do wish they would offer an option for those of us who purchased the earlier Blu-rays to get updated packaging, into which we could slide the disc and booklet. I am holding off for now on The 400 Blows in hopes that they issue this with the clear case, since I already have the standard DVD.

I would also like the option to transfer my existing discs (just five of the seven, alas) to plastic packaging.

We'll see how Criterion handles it -- I would imagine they might be wary of encouraging bootleggers that way. But it should be an option for us early supporters nonetheless.

Why dont you just buy blu ray cases and print the wonderful covers that Thor is putting out? At least you would get them in the same size cases. All we need is for someone to do The Last Emperor, The 400 Blows, El Norte and The Last Metro and we will be all caught up.

I don't even collect these movies, but why would it matter to you how anyone keeps their collection? So you'd be pissed if he bought the movies, threw the case in the garbage and kept the disc in a CD case right? It's not like he's using your money to buy the movies

I think he just meant you pay money for a good release like that and just throw away the covers etc... If you pay for it you can do with it what you want.. but I would never do mine that way either.

What if you decide you want to sell it off etc?

Some of us believe the cases are very important, so we can't imagine why someone would deface one or pitch it.

Oh so your saying that the cardboard garbage will look fine? I think not...you are taling to someone with a wonderful collection. All of my Criterion DVD's are in custom covers/conversions and armway cases. They look wonderful on the shelf! Nobody is "ALTERING" the artwork!

Not trying to sound like a jerk but did you even read what I wrote? Or do you not know about the custom cover hobby? Now if Criterion wants to go back and give us the clear plastic cases and artwork for the first seven films...im all for that.

Go here to look at uniformity: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=1#post1782284

I understand that, I would keep the cases they came in as well, but I wouldn't knock anyone else for doing whatever they do! Hell, I keep slip covers too.

I'm hoping Criterion ships my copy of In the Realm of the Senses soon. The old DVD was one of the worst DVDs I'd ever seen.

It's funny to think that the Criterion BD would be illegal in Japan (due to censorship laws).
