I think more than anything it might have been Stanford being overrated. Coming into this game Stanford had beaten only one team currently ranked in the Top-25. As great as Luck is he doesn't exactly have a great team around him.

I think it's a combination of the two to be honest with you. Oregon is obviously a much better team than Labor Day weekend. And Andrew Luck doesn't seem to have the best team around him. Exceptional quarterback, good team.

I just hope it doesn't cost him the Heisman, which he clearly deserves. Fortunately I don't think it will cost him much. He still put up decent numbers tonight and I still don't see a clear Heisman challenger. Kellen Moore's team lost, killing any slim chance he had. I guess Trent Richardson Oklahoma St.'s Wheedon are Luck's closest competition. As long as Stanford wins it's final two Luck should still win the award fairly easily.

My UCF is somehow only trailing #22 ranked Southern Miss 22-16 and driving despite being out gained more than 2:1 for the game. We need this one just to get to 5-5. We need this one bad just to make an extremely disappointing season tolerable.

Andrew Luck is playing with a bunch of possession receivers and tight ends. If he had ONE playmaker at WR, Stanford would be lethal.

I didn't even realize it till I just looked it up but Paterno's salary at Penn St. never grew much beyond $1 mill per year in his career. That's literally about 1/4th of what the highest paid coaches in D1 football make. And most of the highest paid coaches haven't been with their current team for more than a decade, let alone a half century. Looks like they did get Paterno on a hometown discount. If Penn St. wants a top-tier replacement the price will be much higher.

As far as the students go, well they're kids. If the Penn St. students at the game had actually read the the grand jury indictment I have no doubt they wouldn't be pledging their unconditional support to Paterno and the program.

Its just like the reaction they gave off was that after something like Sean Taylor dying or the Marshall plane crash... LOL this was a cover-up to protect the football team and they or Paterno don't deserve any kind of support after what happened, and really if those fans or players should blame anyone its their head coach had he picked up the phone in 1998 this wouldn't even be an issue.

I always do find it interesting that the youngest fans seem to have the strongest attachment to these extremely old, long-term coaches. For whatever reason the kids have a stronger attachment to Paterno than the older fans. It seemed to be the same way when FSU pushed out Bobby Bowden. The younger fans of FSU were opposed.

Say what you will about Paterno, I do respect his longevity and loyalty to the program. Coaches like Bowden and Paterno are a dying breed. These days even the best coaches burn-out with a program in less than a decade. Just look at Urban Meyer. The guy won 2 national titles in a dream job and still lasted only 6 years at Florida. We're very unlikely to see these 20+ year coaches with the same program again.

Target The Dan Wetzel Column on the Sex Scandal

The Opening Salvo by Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...ex_case_110511

Regarding the Penn State Scandal, the opening salvo was fired by Dan Wetzel in the column for Yahoo! Sports last Saturday, Nov. 5th.

Dan Wetzel from the get-go asks the right questions.

I think you'll find it interesting, the initial reporting.

Explanation on strange bail conditions:

http://www.allvoices.com/contributed...y-organization

The judge is a volunteer for Second Mile and didn't excuse herself from the case. Under the conditions he doesn't even have to post bail unless he misses his court date. Prosecutors had asked for $500 000 bail and more importantly an ankle monitor to wear.

What the hell is going on in the world. Now even judges are protecting this pedophile.

That right there needs to be investigated. It's an obvious conflict of interest. There are non violent offenders who have to post large bail amounts, yet a pedophile posts nothing.

I'll bet in the end Sandusky takes the easy way out and ends it rather than face prison.

Looks like MovieFan was right about Oregon. They received a bigger bounce than I thought in the BCS ranking from beating Stanford. I figured Oklahoma would also be ahead of Oregon, but that didn't happen. Then again Oklahoma has more potential for growth with a more difficult remaining schedule than Oregon.

1 LSU .9933
2 Oklahoma State .9642
3 Alabama .9099
4 Oregon .8755
5 Oklahoma .8400
6 Arkansas .7974
7 Clemson .6935
8 Virginia Tech .6755
9 Stanford .6747
10 Boise State .5959

Regarding Joe Paterno, and Penn. State, the NCAA could still possibly step in and slap the football program with penalties, up to and including... The Death Penalty, for the epic failure to manage the administration of their program.

Joe Pa said days ago that he would be making a statement, that he "wanted" to make a statement. Well that has since not been made, due to "legalities" possible...

What a turn around ! If JoePa has the integrity we all think he does, then he will make that clarification statement immediately, if only only videotaped for posterity, so that, later when he could be asked to give such a clarification statement, that that would not be possible, due to Alzheimer's, dementia, senility, or whatever they choose to come up with as an excuse. JoePa was just the head coach of Penn St. a few days ago. He should be healthy enough right now, to video-tape his clarification statement. But, if he chooses, to ultimately and "conveniently" remain silent about this, then I truly have lost ALL respect for him as a man.

I doubt they'll dump the program just because of how much money it makes for the NCAA / other schools, but I will continue to support the team being punished, again this wouldn't have happened if it was the girl’s field hockey team.

I don't think the NCAA can step in at this point. Of course if boosters were involved with the cover up (which I personally believe), that might force the NCAA to take action. They shouldn't be given the death penalty though. No school should ever again receive that because it just ends up hurting the conference as a whole. Especially when we take into account the multibillion dollar TV deals that are going on.

Dp (giggty) would send a message to EVERY program that no matter how much money you make or how many games you win, you can't cover everything up to protect the program.

Again what will change right now in the college landscape if the NCAA does nothing, it'll still be protect the program at all costs.

The only thing these trials and firing do is scare a few people.

No surprise here. I'm not even sure how The Second Mile survives this mess. Whose actually going to donate to them after everything that happened? At the very least they need to change the name of the organization.

Also seems fishy that the President of The Second Mile held that position for 28 years. That's a crazy long time to work for one organization as President. Surely being with the Second Mile for that long he would have known what was going on with Sandusky.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...d-mile-resigns

Quote:
President of The Second Mile resigns

The youth charity at the center of the child sex-abuse charges against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky received donations in recent years from hundreds of corporations, community groups and individuals -- including the judge who arraigned Sandusky earlier this month.

On Monday, The Second Mile's president resigned, saying he hoped his departure would help restore faith in its mission. The group also announced it had hired Philadelphia's longtime district attorney as its new general counsel.

Jack Raykovitz, a practicing psychologist, had led the group, which was founded by Sandusky in 1977, for 28 years.

Raykovitz had testified before the grand jury that recommended indicting Sandusky on child abuse charges. The panel said Sandusky found his victims through the charity's programs.

Annual reports show how widely popular the charity was before the scandal hit. Hundreds of corporations, community groups and individuals donated each year.

Among them was State College District Judge Leslie A. Dutchcot, who set Sandusky's bail earlier this month. She and her husband donated between $500 and $999 to The Second Mile in 2009, and she volunteered for the group, according to annual reports and her website.

The judge set bail for the 67-year-old Sandusky at $100,000 unsecured -- meaning he did not have to post collateral to be freed but would have to post $100,000 if he ever failed to show up for a hearing.

Dutchcot did not immediately respond to a question on whether she will recuse herself from the case because of those past ties to The Second Mile. She has also removed the mention of The Second Mile from her website.

Major companies and their foundations also have given to The Second Mile. Between 2008 and 2010, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Highmark Foundation, The Hershey Company and State Farm Companies Foundation all gave $50,000 or more to the charity.

Raykovitz said in a statement Monday that he hopes his resignation would mark the beginning of a "restoration of faith in the community of volunteers and staff" at The Second Mile.

Tax forms indicate that Raykovitz's wife, Katherine Genovese, was executive vice president of The Second Mile. She has been with the group since 1984. It's not clear if she still works at the charity, as the staff biography page has been removed from the website.

The Second Mile has said that its youth programs serve as many as 100,000 children a year.

Apparently the Big Ten championship game trophy was supposed to be named after Paterno starting this season. The Big Ten just announced they are dropping Paterno and naming it after Amos Alonzo Stagg - another famous college football coach. Really a no-brainer and something they had to do.
