Default Yikes

I just read on the Emotiva forums that they recommend plugging the amp directly into the wall instead of a surge protector so I decided to try that...

Big mistake!!! As soon as I pressed the power button on the amp it made a terribly loud, almost machine gun type sound. I couldn't turn the power off quickly enough and now I'm afraid I've damaged the speakers.

Oh this could be a long day...

And now when I turn on the amp all I'm getting is a flashing yellow power button and one flashing red led for the left speaker. I guess I'd better leave this all until tomorrow when I can call Emo.

The flashing red LED means there is something wrong with the hookup of that speaker . Check your wire & Make sure the poss. & neg. are not touching each other

Also, if there is a fault (red flashing light) you need to unplug it for a minute and plug it back in to clear the fault.

Sorry to hear of your issues azereus. This is a strange occurance, and I am sure there is a good explanation. Have you made any progress towards a remedy or talk to Emo themselves about this yet?

Well I've made a little progress I guess, meaning that the flashing red and yellow lights are gone so now I'm back to the original issue which is the rather loud humm/buzz coming from the speakers.

I've completely taken apart my system and put it back together to ensure all cables are secure and snug and made sure to keep the ICs away from speaker wires, power cables etc. I also tested with the amp plugged directly into the wall and went so far was to replace all the speaker wire and ICs with new ones.

Unfortunately none of the above has gotten me any farther along so I plan to call Emo when I get home from work today.

I would call them right away....you have more will power than I do, as I would have called first thing this morning.

What was causing the problem with the amp as far as the yellow and red LED lights are concerned?

I think it was Brent that mentioned that was likely due to a connection issue. That seems to be right as it went away after I unplugged and then replugged everything in.

That is a real shame you are having this problem, because my Paradigms opened up nicely, and became exceptionally clear at lower volumes. I am amazed at how much better my old Paradigms sound with it. You will fall in love again with your Paradigms once you get this figured out. I had my master volume at around -9db's (yes, it is relative, but I thought I was thrown it in anyway) and my 7's imaging was great with the highs, mids and lows all blending nicely and without seeming strained at all.

Also to switch on the amplifier with the reciever, you need to connect a 3.5 mm mono jack (TRS) cable from the trigger out (12V) from the receiver to the trigger input on the amplifier.
Man just got this bad boy in the mail and i think i pulled something in my back picking it up

Anyone have a link to good RCA's to use? And a link for the 3.5 mm mono jack? thanks

They should have (at least most of them) includeded a trigger cable in the box

For the interconnects. Monoprice is a good source.

Yeah, check the box...you should have gotten the 3.55mm 12v trigger cable with the amp. Erict has given you good links for interconnects....enjoy your XPA-5, as your Axioms are gonne really shine now!

cdot2four, I would used the component RG6 cables from monoprice. Components are cheaper vs buying individually plus they come color coded.

Have fun with your new amp. And WEAR A BACK BRACE! It is not only the weight, but the fact that picking it up while making you extend your reach that will kill your back. Ice your back if you messed it up already, NOT heat (increases inflammation= more pain).

While I bought both types I ended up using the individual cables instead. The color coding is nice but it was the weight of the cables since they are bundled together that I thought would be less stress on the connection for me.

Congrats on the amp!

For the interconnects, I use BJC cables. Custom lengths, great pricing and great cables.

If the hum is coming from a component in the system, changing cables will not always eliminate the issue. When you took it apart, did you notate when the humming or buzzing stopped? Same for when you put it back together? You need to track down what is causing it and then address the issue of fixing it.

Nothing i've done up to this point has gotten rid of the buzzing issue. The only issue that's been addressed is the flashing red led and yellow light on the power button. Through re-wiring, moving around, changing speaker cables and ICs etc, the buzzing has remained.

So if it is just the amp plugged in and connected to your speakers with no sources (including pre/pro) connected to the amp, is the hum/buzz still there?
