Kinsberg now backing off of the X-Men crossover talk.
"They exist in parallel universes," "Fantastic Four" producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker told the Daily News in a joint email. "The Fantastic 4 live in a world without mutants. And the X-Men live in a world without the Fantastic 4." |

Stan Lee said this when asked about a cameo (article from January of this year):

This is one reason why I think the scene with Iceman's parents in "X2" still works so well. Everything goes good until the Mom utters that pathetic line: "Have you tried not being a mutant?" I despise that question, because unlike behaviors, inborn traits are permanent. As a viewer, it seemed like Singer added that line just to push the metaphor further...but it made Bobby's mother look foolish. I really felt for him, when both his parents sided with his weasel of a brother; it was another cruel cliche that wasn't needed for the story. |

I am not surprised at all, Disney Blu. Bryan Singer is a great comic book director, Jonathan Trank hasn't even made a good movie yet. I am going into this with the lowest possible expectations and will even try to pretend it's not a FF4 movie if need be. If it still underwhelms, I will be shocked.

So the criticism seems to be they focus too much on the origin?
That's what I've expected based on the trailer, I don't have a problem with that. Anyway, I found enjoyment in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Mediocre reviews aren't an issue to me; cast chemistry is a major positive. In Ant-Man I couldn't find much chemistry which was to its detriment. I'm also wondering. If people went into this film with low expectations and all this bad press, will reviewers be prepared to analyse the film in a positive light? It's much easier to give a positive review if there is positive anticipation for the film. Maybe the film would be better if Josh Trank was left to it without studio interference, who knows. I'd argue Ant-Man was worsened by the lack of Edgar Wright. But of course all we can do is speculate. I'm disheartened by this negative press but I still anticipate it. I don't think Fox will relinquish the rights anytime soon. Find a way to tie the X-Men in - yes, even if it involves parallel universes and what not - and you'll guarantee most X-Men fans will see it, thereby guaranteeing an audience. FF is a risky property for Fox to be honest. The last time they did something not X-Men related was Elektra and FF in 2005, then followed by an FF sequel a few years later. R.e. the article saying 2005 was too soon. Come on. The landscape of the world has changed since then, as has cinema. Terminator reebooted in the space between 2009 and 2015. Amazing Spider-Man reebooted 10 years after the first trilogy started, 5 years after the last one. Recasting and reinvention is a thing within Hollywood. I don't see why people strike that against it. If Fox still hold the rights in 2025 I'd be all for the 1960s Kirby/Lee version. But if it ends up bombing, at least it's a curiosity for the shelf. We can look back on it in a couple of years and think "well, it did this thing right, this thing wrong, but it's still part of the overall tapestry." Should we be worried by this coverage? Yes. But it's not necessarily its grave. Although even international success didn't save The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So we wait and see I suppose. |
