I just had the following exchange on criterionforum.org:
Me: "With Kinowelt releasing these on Blu-ray in April/May, could US versions from Criterion be far behind? Or were they outbid by another company for US distribution?" Jeff: "Criterion did indeed win the U.S. distribution rights. The films are owned by the Chaplin estate, managed by Mk2, and distributed in different territories by the highest bidder. I believe Criterion will want to do some additional restoration of their own, so their discs may still be a way down the line." |

After searching a couple days i finally picked up 81/2. This was a blind buy for me as are most of my criterion purchases. I must say this film was quite good but i found myself confused at times. I never knew when he was dreaming or was it real or a part of his film inside this film. Definitely going to need to watch this a couple of times to get the full scope of it. This hasn't been my favourite criterion thus far, id have to give that to the wages of fear or gomorrah, but its a wonderful film to add to my growing collection of masterpieces.

No word. Legality is dependent on licensing from Universal. Since Universal released Spartacus on HD-DVD, they may eventually choose to keep it for themselves for Blu-ray, just like Do the Right Thing and Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas.

Warner probably isn't looking to put out the Lloyd films quite yet. They probably need to revisit the New Line/Lloyd Estate deal and re-up to do so.

So I guess it can go both ways I guess it depends on the powers that be. The one thing I will note and please a SIDE NOTE was that MGM/UA which who knows will own the United Artist MGM titles that WB's does NOT own... well suffice to say the FUGITIVE KIND was on of the old, bargain bin eventual releases of MGM's and now CRITERION is able to license the title. Not sure how but it very cool, only downside is NO BD HD release so far. Makes you wonder about former MGM/UA release on Laserdisc that were never carried over to DVD due to distribution. then again who knows with those title last I heard MGM/UA was trying to auction them off, Who won? Has it been determined? Last edited by PowellPressburger; 01-19-2010 at 03:20 AM. |

I always thought that Turner owns the MGM/UA releases...MGM/UA/TRISTAR is owned by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment...

The post-1986 MGM films and UA catalog are owned by MGM. Currently they have a deal with Fox to distribute that catalog. The catalog is apparently up for sale, and Fox is the most likely purchaser. Someone at criterionforum.org noted that the press release for The Fugitive Kind had a Fox logo and not an MGM logo, which might suggest that the MGM/UA catalog that MGM still owns may indeed by sold to Fox soon. Sony has a minor stake in MGM, but aside from a brief video distribution deal (2005-2006) they currently do not have any home video rights. |
