Just watched Iron Doors - it's one of those "guy wakes up locked in a vault with no memory of how he got there" movies. No food, no drink, just a dead rat and a padlocked locker. With only two people in the cast and pretty much only one location it did just about enough to keep me interested, though not much happens and the reward for sticking around to find out what's going on is all-too-brief and raises far more questions than it answers.
It's a German movie clearly aimed at the international market so shot in English (with some African language parts and one song sung in German). Consequently the blu ray isn't entirely English friendly but there aren't any forced subs for the English dialogue at least, which makes up the bulk of the film, and most of the African (Swahili?) isn't subtitled anyway so there's only a few lines of annoying forced subs in one scene as well as a couple of pointless on-screen text translations ("Day 1" etc). It was converted to 3D for theatrical release back in 2010 and released in Germany on 3D blu ray so the 3D conversion is not up to modern standards - no pop out whatsoever and minimal depth because pretty much the whole film takes place in a room. Some of the 3D looked OK but some of it looked weird and I spotted a number of errors, which at least gave my eyes something to do. I like these kinds of films but I struggle to recommend this one, for the 3D or for anything else. Unless you want to see a guy drinking urine out of a shoe. His German accent also makes some of the dialogue more comical than it perhaps was intended to be... Last edited by the13thman; 10-14-2015 at 11:30 PM. |

I watched Call Of Hawks which is an hour-long documentary included on Best Of 3D Volume 7-9.
Most of the Best of 3D series is English-friendly but unfortunately this documentary is presented with only German audio, though the titles etc are in English. The credits reveal that there was an English audio track recorded, so it's annoying that the Germans have dumped it. Anyway, the 3D is strong, with lots of shots of large birds (not just hawks - you get owls, vultures and eagles too) flying back and forth, both into and out of the screen. Europeans and documentary film-makers sure do know more about how to use 3D than the idiots in Hollywood... |

![]() ![]() I don't have a sound system worth a spit, but this was a fantastic 3D movie. Very much a mash-up of "2012" and "The Day After Tomorrow" as far as storylines go. Pretty much the strongest 3D I have seen in recent memory. It makes kind of wish I had seen it in the theater, but -- especially for you projection-screen types -- it's still great at home. I'm in the middle of watching this: ![]() The 3D is okay, but I'm really enjoying the story. Who'd a thunk middle-aged John Cusack would work as a Roman general? And Jackie Chan just gets better with age, in my opinion. |

I watched Jurassic World in 3D - nice but far far too conservative.
At first I was very disappointed as it seemed to be all depth but then I started seeing some use of the negative parallax here and there - it still didn't have much impact though as what comes out of the screen doesn't come out very far or for very long, it just subtly enhances the 3D effect. Most of the film is depth-only 3D and since the film doesn't appear to have been shot with 3D in mind at all in terms of shot framing, I found that my brain was often struggling to remember that it was watching a 3D film at all. Many shots offered little opportunity to layer the 3D. Jungle films offer all kinds of opportunities for trees and foliage to be positioned in and out of the screen to create a proper 3D environment and there's just none of that in Jurassic World. There are a few nice moments here and there but for me it's one of the least impressive of this year's big budget conversions. As for the film itself, I found it easier to take the more stupid elements the second time around but it's still the silliest one in the series with some of the dumbest characters. |

There's not much pop to this violent but bloodless Chinese animation based on a video game, but the depth and layering are more than adequate, giving the battle scenes in particular an extra dimensional kick. Once the Black Dragon turned up it all looked very impressive. I wouldn't have bothered watching it in 2D though. I got the Australian version, as that also has the English dub track.

Anyway, I just watched X-Men Days Of Future Past which I had a very bad experience with theatrically, it was ruined by ghosting due to bad projection, I really should have asked for my money back. No ghosting on my active 3DTV though, the picture looked fantastic. What wasn't fantastic was the 3D, which, though native, isn't even as impressive as some Hollywood conversions these days, being concentrated all on depth with no pop-out. Bryan Singer is evidently another one of these directors that just sees 3D as 2D with added depth and thats how the whole film is shot. Some scenes are enhanced by the depth sure, but the approach to 3D just feels... really really cowardly I guess. Jack The Giant Slayer is similarly conservative, sadly I don't hold out any hope for X-Men Apocalypse having anything other than crushingly disappointing 3D... |

There was no Blu-ray 3D logo on the front cover or the spine and only available as a 2D search, but now I've found a picture of the back of the slip-cover that confirms it is a Blu-ray 3D encode:

I watched Gulliver's Travels in 3D - the film was just as weak as I remembered it being in 2D, hugely annoying main star and dire script. The song and dance sequence at the end though, is so terrible that I'd actually wiped it from my memory so it was a shock to see it again.
Sadly the 3D was pretty mild throughout. The odd scene looked good, with moments of depth, layering and dimensionality but I found the 3D was barely noticeable for the most part and there was no pop-out as usual. I did notice the miniaturisation effect a few times, which was a nice fit for the film but they really could have pushed it a hell of a lot more. |
