Not everyone that will buy this will do so because of the packaging. If you want the ADV and Manga dubs on Blu-ray without having to resort to piracy or import the Japanese Blu-ray and sync stuff up yourself, your only options are:

1. The Ultimate Edition (Sold out in 8 hours)
2. The Collector's Edition (Which wasn't for sale prior to today)

The standard edition does NOT have the ADV and Manga dubs, most likely due to restrictions from Studio Khara. Also, the standard edition is missing the video format edition of the End of Evangelion.

To give a similar example, I really didn't like the packaging for Darker Than Black on Blu-ray (especially after getting it, and I've since put the discs in a standard 3-disc DVD case), but I bought it anyway because:

1. The DVDs were OOP and being scalped by that point as FUNimation's license had expired (this was prior to them letting people know of certain expirations in advance, it's actually the show that got them to change that given the uproar it caused).
2. There was no other way to get S1 on Blu-ray in English.
3. The Blu-ray ended up being cheaper than the scalped DVDs by the time I got it. It was $59 from RightStuf which was the only place left that still had it in June 2016.

Personally I think the CE slipbox just looks okay. It's nothing amazing but it works, but I can see why others wouldn't be fond of it, especially given what we got in the past (every release had character art). The disc art, meh, though this series has never had disc art that wasn't bland, Fullmetal Alchemist had a similar problem for most of its releases. The cases, they also look okay, nothing amazing. I'm curious what the interiors will have as they're using clear cases instead of blue, which is a big plus (clear needs to be standard for Blu-ray cases already).

Is that the Netflix dub, or the ADV dub?
It's the Netflix dub. I can tell the slight difference, and I didn't even watch the Netflix dub.

Although as preview impressions go, I'm somewhat more motivated to give the Netflix dub a shot.

Exactly what i was saying two years ago on this very thread, I got roasted for that. I guess now everyone enjoys those price.

Also I don't get the art choice for the CE. It's as if they did not want to pay for the Sadamoto artwork on it (yet there's those cheap postcards?). The amaray sleeves are plain ugly.

Any chance the CE will go on sale or is it more likely to sell out before that happens?

If the Ultimate Edition is any indication, it'll likely sell out before then, possibly before release.

The content differences are fully enumerated in this EvaGeeks Wiki article.

The historical context is that Anno decided to put both the TV ending (i.e. Episodes 25-26) and theatrical ending (i.e. The End of Evangelion) on King Records' VHS/LD releases of Eva TV, so the format of EoE was changed slightly to more closely resemble the TV series in terms of title card alterations plus the creation of new ED credits for both "episodes" of EoE and a new Next Episode Preview for 26' "Magokoro wo Kimi ni" that didn't exist beforehand.

Note that the "Genesis 0:13" VHS/LD volumes featured TV Ep. 25 and 25' "Air" from EoE, while "Genesis 0:14" featured TV Ep. 26 and 26' "Magokoro wo Kimi ni" from EoE.

They want to charge $175 for that? I dont know whose idea it was but its insulting. No art on the cases, no art on the discs, a magazine sized art book and they have the nerve (no pun intended) to charge nearly $200 for this set.

Yeah, no.

Difference between UE and CE is only artboards. This means that you pay more $100 for only artboards. Is this worth? absolutely no. Then, if you have choice to buy CE or UE, will you choose CE? maybe no? I'm very confused. Any one like me here?

I agree that the value proposition for the CE is rather lacking, that is unless you're a hardcore dub fan of the ADV/Manga version or else really want the "Video Format" version of The End of Evangelion for less than what it would cost in the Ultimate Edition.

Quite frankly, neither set is worth its respective asking price. On a strictly practical level, unless you must have the old ADV/Manga dub then I'd recommend simply getting the regular 5-disc version for significantly less money than either fancier edition.

I'm definitely a fan of shelf friendly releases like this. But yea, a boxset of an edited/not 100% series isn't worth more than $80 msrp, imo

There's the lanyard and paperweight too, the much larger book, and obviously the more luxurious packaging. It may not be $100 worth of stuff in value but you're still getting a a bit more with the Ultimate Edition.

If I were better off financially right now I would have still liked to have gotten the UE even if it's a bit too big for me and not really worth the price. The laserdisc art is nice and I like the book, the other stuff I can take or leave. I'm satisfied enough with the CE to not feel like I missed out.

I've only seen bits of the old dub and have no attachments to it, but I still want to own a copy and check it out, even if it means having to pay twice the price compared to the standard edition. I assume they had to pull some expensive strings to include the classic dub (or the Netflix dub was expensive but the one they are required to use, so they just switched the costs with the other dub).

That’s precisely where I’ll put mine. I just hope we get more Evangelion vinyl and something similar in style for the Rebuilds so it’s cohesive. It’ll fit in super nice with some other large releases too.

The only reason I want to own the ADV dub is for consistency. If they got the Netflix cast to return for the four Rebuild films then I'd have only wanted the Netflix dub. But if I want to watch the series and then the Rebuild films after, it'll be jarring to go from one dub to another. It's worth paying a little extra for this alone imo.
