Off topic sorry, but just got back from my birthday event of a 'Cinema Paradiso' and 'La Planete Sauvage' double feature at the local cult movie theatre.

I'd previously seen CP (though the directors cut, the screening tonight was the theatrical) but had not seen LPS. Had wanted to since discovering the strange cover of the UK blu-ray.

And wow what an amazing film. Visually engaging and so very stimulating.

Why did this film just disappear for most people? You'd think since it's an animation it would have been dubbed into English and be one of those cult classics right now like Milo and Otis, Labyrinth etc.

Just watched Tiny Furniture and Weekend back-to-back.

I have a love/hate relationship with the works of Lena Dunham. On one hand, she feels so entitled about everything that it becomes very frustrating. And on the other, there's a reason why I cringe in some of those scenes because there's some degree of truth to it.

Weekend was a lovely film. There are moments that stand out more than the rest but overall a very tight package. It will fit very well with the Criterion canon. Weekend being released by criterion gives me hope that they will release Linklater's Before Sunrise and Before Sunset during the theatrical run of its third entry (or even a boxset of the three films!).

It was dubbed into English (though I think the French is better). The UK Masters of Cinema has a really great Blu-ray out, if you have Region B capability. I think every domestic home video version is out of print. It's too bad.

EDIT: I'm talking specifically about the "$8 Off One DVD or Blu-Ray with a minimum price of $40 or more" coupon with a bar code of 121951.

Right.

I told the sales clerk up front that I had a coupon that said it was for Members only (the $8 coupon), but that I wasn't a member. He said it wouldn't hurt to try anyway and tried to help me get the discounted price. Unfortunately the coupon wouldn't go through for me. I'm not angry or anything about it. That would have been icing on the cake.

Also maybe worth mentioning is that the sales clerk "thought" that if I bought a membership within 30 days of yesterday's purchase, that I could be reimbursed for yesterday's purchase, with the $8 coupon as well as the 10% off. ("Thought" is the key word there. He wasn't positive about that).

Late Spring is a GREAT place to start, as it's a great film and already on blu. Tokyo Story is another good starting point, but only available on DVD in the US. If you are region free capable, BFI has it and other Ozus on blu as well.

Last night I watched The Cranes are Flying for the first time and all I can say is "Wow!" I was totally impressed with some of the handheld camera work as well as the 'pull-back crane shots' that really exposed the surroundings. Such a beautiful work of art.. Tatyana Samojlova as Veronica was outstanding. I also really loved the
[Show spoiler]sequence when Boris is shot, and he's seeing what his life could have or wanted to be. Very trippy and emotional.
. There is so much to this movie, I can't speak highly enough of it. I recently bought Letter Never Sent which have not watched yet, but while researching it, I kept reading The Cranes are Flying was a superior film, so I knew I had to watch it. Guess I'll be watching LNS tonight!!

I would agree with Pat. If you are only region A capable, this is a good set of his mid to later films. I'm a big fan of the silents and love his silent films as well.

I pre-ordered the Jean Grémillon set. The only Blu ray I ordered so far is Down By Law.

Tempted to get Samurai Trilogy, Kuroneko & Three Outlaw Samurai from B&N whilst they're all 50% off. All great movies yet how often would I watch them? Paying an additional $10 for p&h kinda annoys me too

I had a similar reaction when I watched the film a few weeks ago. I hope to see Letter Never Sent soon, and would greatly welcome an upgrade of The Cranes are Flying.

This is news to me too, because there's no free shipping to Canada, and we're closer! I wonder if Australia gets their stuff within 3 days too, rather than waiting s month like us poor Canadians have to.

You have to spend $10,000 to get free shipping from B&N to Australia. I think its worth it to save $10

(kidding btw)

Spotted Metropolis for 50% off too, hmmm.....once again a movie I'd only watch every ~5 years

See, for me the shipping isn't all that bad. Cheaper than Amazon.com, and there's no import fee persay. Also it may take linger, but at least I know my stuff is secure in a mailbox, because as of late, Amazon.com uses Canpar for final delivery and they just toss the items on the doorstep.

Actual discussion of movies? I know that's a far fetched concept for a forum such as this, but maybe we can try it .

Just posting lists isn't going to be constructive to anyone. Apparently, people only post these lists because they want everyone else to see them, not because they're so interested in other people's lists (since they're not).
It's bad enough that politics and religion can't be discussed, because god forbid an actual discussion would take place. Not that I would feel the need to discuss them all the time, but you can hardly go into a discussion of let's say, The Last Temptation of Christ without going into religion. An interesting one. Not one where the lowest price is discussed .
But that's just my take on things.
