I'd probably only listen to the Japanese audio anyway (it feels weird for me to not hear Japanese while watching anime, with a few exceptions like Cowboy Bebop), so I'd probably be fine with the standard version. The one thing that gives me pause is that the "classic" discs mention having a different subtitle track, presumably the one ADV used back in the day. I know about a few differences that came in with the Netflix subtitles, but if anyone knows the full extent of the changes, are the Netflix/Khara subs still an okay way to experience the show? Or are the changes from the ADV subs too significant to ignore?

As someone who will only ever watch them in Japanese and who has tons of artbooks of Evangelion already I just want the series + End of Eva. Is the Standard the way to go? I was worried when I saw 5 discs. Are they compressing them more for the standard?

They’re the same discs. The only reason there are 11 in the Ultimate and Collector’s Editions is because the Classic version (ADV dub) are on their own separate discs as a bonus feature.

As well as the video format edition of the End of Evangelion. The Manga dub for End of Evangelion and Death and Rebirth is also exclusive to the Ultimate and Collector's editions.

Thanks! That's pretty much perfect then.

Pity about the video format of End edition being exclusive, but it's probably not something I'd watch more than once (just to experience it in HD) as I prefer the theatrical.

The pics on the CE show the 3 cases... clear cases with solid covers with just the series title and 00, 01 and 02 on the fronts.

^ Also, you can make payments on the CE, no credit-check required, if you preorder through both GKIDS and RightStuf. So there definitely are several financial options available for these.

Placed my pre-order on RS. Yeah, I b*tched about no FMTTM, but my first viewing experience was via the ADV platinum thinpack, so the classic sub/dub was a must. I actually like the minimalist artwork on the box/cases. Now just need to wait for Ronin Warriors and my holy grails of anime on bluray will be complete.

I know RS still has it but Gkids is just missing out on even more sales if they sold out this fast. With no announced number there's no reason to not add another print run until the sales slow down.

Although it doesn't look like they're on sale at Shout Factory's website yet.

Jesus, I just woke up and the CE is already sold out? Welp, guess the decision to stick with the UE was made for me.

I'm not too bummed out though, I was likely gonna stick with the UE because I'm I love with the laserdisc style packaging and very much want that hardcover book. The CE is just.. mediocre. The outside box has a nice minimalist aesthetic, but those cases are downright ugly. I also just got a new square bookshelf, and the UE will look really nice on top of it displayed with some of the art boards on easels

I just sold off my Pokemon DS games that I haven't touched in a decade, and it more than covered the cost of the UE.
