Watched Gladiator II on 4K disc last night -- epic presentation and an ok film.

I also watched a quirky Takeshi Miike film called "Zebraman." The 88 Films UK branch sent over a copy of their new Blu-ray. I am a Miike fan but had never watched Zebraman before. It was pretty cool, satirizing, and quirky to say the least. I also have the sequel, so we'll see when I get to that one. 88 Films is definitely an interesting label to look out for.

I feel like the Blu-Ray Disc Association or Sony or whoever needs to get on the 8K bandwagon before streaming does...

UHD BD looks great on a 8K display.

Just like Blu Ray looks great on 4K TVs.

Update on our friend Vilya. We talked earlier in the day, and he is still at the hospital waiting for next steps. His heart rate has dropped significantly to a level which has his Doctors’ attention. They are looking at a pacemaker as an option to regulate things, but I am guessing that has to be given a thumbs up by all of them. He is very fatigued and has tightness in his chest with some pain as well. He is still the same Vilya as we joked a bit. I suggested that if he does get a pacemaker, make sure it is hard wired and not the WiFi option. His reply was classic as he stated “I am going to ask for one of those Audioquest $10,000 cables with one of the grounding attachments to hook up the pacemaker.”

Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he faces this latest challenge with the same determination we know him to always have.

Edit;

They told him he is not leaving without a pacemaker. They are now determining which type.

Thanks for the update gotmule, he must be exhausted. I feel better hearing the pacemaker news, and yes, his sense of humour is intact.

Vilya just shared that they moved him to Barnes in St. Louis for surgery today likely. His heart rate is still not where it should be.

Update…

They are prepping him for surgery. Could be anywhere from 2-5 hours. I am heading to work, but will share any news when I get it.

What do you think was the best year or best few years to be a collector?

On the digital side its definitely been down hill the last few years with services ending, increased prices and digital copies expiring.

The physical side has been interesting. we have had a buyers market a sellers market and a lot of movement on some licenses in the last decade. Generally I think things are worse then they were 5 years ago as i can find things cheaper then ever and had some releases i had on my wish list for a decade but finding deals is way harder then it used to be. I much preferred when prices were a bit higher but the buying and selling was more liquid.

I can't really say because I don't think I'm a collector.

I certainly don't collect virtual items like digital movies. I have some mostly to share with my kids but those are easy come easy go.

My favorite band, Pink Floyd has released many recordings remastered for ATMOS. In fact lots of music is available in ATMOS on Apple Music also.

I am surprised when I buy a DVD these days but it does happen usually with Shark movies.

Boutiques kicked it into overdrive within the last 5 years. Tons of stuff, mainstream and not-so-mainstream, released on the best possible format. Sometimes rivaling the major studios.

Vilya update…

I will use his words as surgery has been postponed. It looks like a tough weekend for our friend, so again, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

“No surgery before Monday. Seen 7 doctors so far and more expected. They will decide as a team what to do. A defibrillator is possible.

I have a new problem called a 2 in 1 AV block. Every 2 times that my atria contracts my ventricle only contracts once. I lose a full heartbeat every other one.

I am extremely weak and becoming a little confused.”

I certainly wouldn't argue that streaming looks or sounds as good as a disc. You've got me there. I just do not have room for more stuff. Most of my collection I rarely rewatch anyway. I own all my favorites on Blu-ray already, I have a few 4Ks and a few DVDs left.

For me, 4K is just too unreliable a format to sink serious money into. And maybe my sight is starting to go at age 40, but when I got a new 4KTV and loaded up Dark Knight Rises on 4K Blu-ray; me and all my family members kind of looked around and were wildly underwhelmed.

I will say some do look really well done though only because the Blu-ray wasn't.

For me, streaming just makes more sense economically. If you're someone who doesn't want to invest serious money into this, just want to watch something once and move on; streaming is a much better value.

Buying digitally? Just seems kind of a waste of money to me. They can take it away or change it whenever they want. Seems like you'd still get more value out of a streaming subscription.

The main problems I have seen in the last 5 years is:

the used market is weak.
Best buy is gone.
right stuf is gone.
Disney movie club is gone.
Disney movie rewards is gone.
big lots is gone.
dollar tree is gone.
Target doesnt sell instore anymore.
international shipping has become horrendous.
Disney has been a shell of itself for the last 5 years.
companies aren't including blu rays, dvds or digital copies in releases that used to have them.

The last 5 years have been really rough. We have had some great releases in the last 5 years in particular for tv series but I don't think its enough to make up for what we have lost.

But Goodwill, thrift shops, pawn shops, library friends sales, amazon marketplace, Ebay, etc., have more than picked up the slack for used media.

Online vendors like Hamilton Book, GRUV, Movies Unlimited, DeepDiscount, etc., have also come in clutch.

Outside of Disney being a tightwad studio, we've had it pretty good, IMO.

Then the newer ultra indie labels have also come in rocking and rolling like: Deaf Crocodile, 88 Films, Radiance Films, 101 Studios, Powerhouse/Indicator, Imprint, Umbrella.

I could go on and on.

the only studio I would say that's treating consumers well is universal. all the others are expiring digital copies or removing discs or jacking up prices.

like Warner and Disney have been a shit show for a while and paramount and Sony are experimenting with screwing customers over.

With physical media the best year is always the current one. I can still buy the vast majority of titles that were released in previous years plus all the titles that came out this year so this year is automatically better than any previous year.

With digital, titles can be removed at any time so it could potentially get worse and worse.

yeah but didn't netflix start in 2011 theior streaming only service by charging 8$ If someone today wants the closest package (i.e. a few less people watching what they want in the home) is now 23$ that means costing almost 3x as much. why are you obsessed with insignificant/fake increases with physical media and not the huge increases happening every year with streaming?

Quote:
All you guys talk about is buying Discs, and nothing about will the Studios keep making them if the Market is not there.
because at this time the market is huge, if and when there is no more market there will be nothing to talk about, if we are still alive we can just enjoy the collections we have and buy already released titles we find new or used. The reality is we will just most likely save a bit of cash. what will you be paying for streaming if and when that day comes.

Amazon, AppleTV, Hulu, Paramount+, and other Streaming Providers have many new Movies and TV Shows coming out all the time.

but like you said in the first one every streaming provider has original programming if you actually want to have access to all of it you will need to subscribe to all of them and that is a small fortune every month. The best of those eventually make it to physical media and why would I want the other 99% that is created just so they can put a larger number on what is available even if no one even watches them?
