That's an interesting thought but IMDB shows Warner as having the most current rights and they don't license to Criterion (or anybody else afaik).

Which is unfortunate because they have a lot of titles that would make great CC releases.

Now that I think of it, The Tenant would make a lot of sense. It would complete Polanski's "apartment trilogy" on Criterion Blu.

Either way, as long as Rosemary's Baby is released, I'm happy.

I must say the second viewing was a whole different experience.(probably says as much about my growth as a movie lover as much as anything else). I sat transfixed through the whole movie - even rewinding a few times when I wasn't too sure of what was being said. It's not for everyone but I found it visually and artistically stunning on second viewing. I would highly recommend it during the B&N sale if you value storyline as much or more than non-stop action. (And I'm not knocking action movies either-you just won't find much in this movie)
Something that may increase enjoyment of Marienbad is watching a lot more Delphine Seyrig movies and then going back to it. Try Daughters of Darkness, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Jeanne Dielman, India Song, Muriel. There are also heaps of mediocre movies which she completely livens up with her presence like Stolen Kisses, Donkey Skin (the only actor in the movie who is in tune with the director), Mr Freedom. It helps you pick out exactly how great her performance really is in Marienbad.

The other thing that you have to take into consideration with Marienbad is that it's EXTREMELY flamboyant. All those earnest looks and the constant swelling organs leave me constantly pursing my lips and swooning in adoration. There is nothing I like more on a cold winters night than to sit down with my Marienbad bluray; Sherry in hand and the two cats on my lap.

An announcement for Mulholland drive tomorrow would be great.

But I'm really hoping for Le Samourai. Going to sleep with fingers crossed.

Then, after Le Samourai I wish to see Samuel Fuller's White Dog on Blu.

Out of the 3 Melvilles currently out on BD in the collection, it's the best. I'm kicking myself for putting it off so long to watch it. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Le cercle rouge, but it seemed really weak in comparison to Leon Morin. Of course, I made the mistake of watching it rather soon after watching Leon Morin.

I'm probably the wrong person to comment, as I'm not as fussy about PQ as others, but I didn't think it was that bad. Perhaps the quality is down because they couldn't get anything better to work with. This site is often weird about ratings of the films, as High and Low only has a 3.5/5 for PQ, and most people think that rating was rather harsh, especially in comparison to some of the other titles like Kagemusha.

I forgot to add Foreign Correspondent to my predictions. Make it an October 9th release.

If we get a Kurosawa today please make it be Rashomon. We've waited long enough. High and Low was released about a year ago this month.

Put an "h" after the "s" and you have what Studio Canal is good for these days.

Hoping for some more Ozu. I would settle for an upgrade, but something new would be a nice surprise.

Hah. I only have one studio canal disc, The Graduate, and it wasn't that bad. I can see them grabbing titles and holding onto them as what you mean though.

July - The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,Total Recall...
August - Herzog/Kinski edition (no Eng subs though),The Ice Storm,Homo Faber,Pi..
September - That Obscure Object of Desire,The Trial,Le Quai Des Brumes
October - Trio of Hammer horrors
November - Forbidden Games,Golden Helmet...

Just to name a few. Now,they are not consistent with releasing worldwide classics as Criterion is,but they are far from disaster either.

Love to see the latter again CinemaBlu, but alas, it's a WB title. Doubtful Criterion would get it.

Speaking of Studio Canal Annoyance... severing their deals with Criterion in the US was probably the worst move that company ever made. We all kind of thought they would release titles monthly etc, and it is a complete drought... and even in Europe it isn't exactly a geyser either. I will import Discreet Charm from UK amazon... but the titles are so far an few between it would have been beneficial to let Criterion have US distribution rights to some titles. Just my opinion.

I have a hunch that giving Lionsgate access to their catalog was part of a deal to getting the European rights to Lionsgate titles like The Hunger Games. Just a hunch.

For anyone interested, Masters of Cinema have just announced their Q4 slate.

October:

Fritz Lang's 5 hour epic Die Nibelungen (from a newly completed restoration)

November:

The Passion of Joan of Arc. Available in both 20 and 24fps, the alternate Lo Duca version as a supplement, and with the original DANISH intertitles, which I don't believe are available on the Criterion DVD. (also from a new restoration, undertaken by MoC themselves)

December:

Ozu's Floating Weeds
Kinugasa's long unavailable Gate of Hell, never before released even on DVD. Probably one of the most desired Japaneses classics. With an awesome cover to boot:

I think it's about time for some more Kurosawa. I wouldn't be too surprised if they double it up like they've been doing, maybe Stray Dog and Drunken Angel.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, since OCT titles are being announced today and usually Criterion never seems to do more than one "horror" film for Oct and we are pretty much in for Rosemary's Baby... it would still be a huge thrill to get a BLU upgrade for Vampyre. That being said The Blob is coming also to blu soon from Criterion.

if anything for upgrades I am still wishing for L’eclisse, and L’avventura.
