The fact that they didn't also tested the full Dolby Atmos track with the official Dolby Reference Player for volume levels, or even an Atmos system (for that matter), but instead they converted it to .wav (with a program that's very well-known to remove Dolby's DialNorm and apply unnecessary volume gain) makes this a very laughable review.
They could've made comparisons with the 2012 Blu-Ray, or even the 2 previous DVDs, if they wanted to make a professional review. The 35mm scan, while it's great to have it for that "nostalgia" feel, just like the Despecialized Editions of Star Wars, it shouldn't be used as a reference. Epic fail, literally. |

The Spanish reviews and the German one by Timo Wolters are the only ones that are correct and that speak with complete clarity about the potential problems of Titanic 4K/UHD as a consequence of the applied artificial intelligence. |

It has its flaws, but I wouldn't necessary throw it down the abyss. Even the Atmos track, even if It's not your typical "at-your-face" mix, isn't that bad. And if you don't like it, you can always mux the 5.1 DTS-HD audio track. Compared to the 4K of AVATAR, which I saw some comparisons, this one comes off much better. |

If you notice, the spectrum is only for a WAV file that came out the 7.1 TrueHD track. Had they ran it through Dolby Reference Player (which also Dolby offers a trial for), they could've also tested the volume levels of the height channels as well. In this case, they just extracted the MLP Atmos from the disc, ran it through eac3to (or whatever) and just outputted a 7.1 WAV file which, more than likely, also had automatic volume gain applied to it (which is probably not what the studio wanted the track to sound like). Programs like eac3to or FFMpeg are great for transcoding audio/video files between formats for personal use. But for professional reviews/use, such as in this case, it's always best to use official reference equipment/software, as most tracks have embedded metadata that tells the receiver/software how loud or low the audio track should be played. |

I just watched the film and contrary to many opinions here, I don't think there is any "AI" enhancements going on here. There's a ton of sharpening though and a lot of the 4k scanned material is intercut with 2k VFX work and that shows really badly. For example, the hallway scene where Kate and Leo run away from the water and they are stunt people with face replacements. This previously worked ok but now with a 4k transfer and everything scaled up, the faces look quite clearly fake. Which they always were. A lot of VFX work are now clearly visible, another example is when the camera goes into the window with Leo underwater, there is matte work on top of the window which was quite a bit less noticeable before. And then just before when Rose decides to go meet Leo in the famous deck scene, there is a scene that looks like a greenscreen shot (Camera pans down from the ceiling and towards Rose sitting between the rest of the girls). Before I had never noticed it but now's its just crazy apparent and quite bad looking. One good thing though, the banding in the horizon in the night shots has been eliminated which on the DVD was just horrible. Luckily enough, they have not tried to smooth out out-of-focus shots. So most of the horrible scaling artifacts tend to be on the VFX shots. There are some weird artifacts along the edges of people sometimes which I think are also the result of oversharpening. You can also spot a lot of small white halos along objects. It's not as bad as people make it out to be but it should've been about 50% less. Looking at peoples faces is a bit jarring, especially in the beginning. One odd thing was the new color grade on the last part in the ocean. Was a bit excessive but I don't remember how it was originally. I wonder how this looks with people who turn the sharpness up on their tv's. Jesus.
You could probably make a very nice looking 2k transfer out of this one. Just blur the image a couple of pixels, scale down and then add more grain. Last edited by hmcindie; 12-25-2023 at 08:19 PM. |

Watched this last night with my wife and we both thought it looked amazing. Did a quick visual comparison to the Blu-ray and it’s safe to say we’ll be watching this version going forward.
