I hope the Blu-ray release will have the international trailers on it.

I think Rocket is funny in any language.

...the year’s top domestic film — the first August release to do so in almost 35 years — “Guardians” will likely become by next weekend the first film of 2014 to hit $300 million.

But it wont be the year's top domestic film. Hunger Games will pass it.

I was quoting FoxNews. As for your comment, I agree. Given Hunger Games box office history, it should set a brand new record. Also, I have no doubt if Mockingjay, Part 1 was released side by side with Guardians it would have won.
  1. Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 (opening with $148 Million)
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy (opening with $83 million)

Mockingjay, Part 1, would have affected Guardians opening but not by much.

I am going to go on record as saying Mockingjay, Part 1 will be the biggest November opening beating its previous record.

Oh I am beyond happy for GotG's achievements, I am just pointing out Fox News, as usual, getting their facts wrong (though usually it is on purpose).
Is it the highest domestic so far this year? Absolutely. But you cant yet make the ascertion that it is the first in 35 years to attain a feat it hasnt yet attained. At best, you could say IF it holds that spot, it would become the first August release in 35 years to do it.
But it wont.

That is almost certainly correct. That doesn't, however, minimize what GotG was able to pull off. Hunger Games has so many built in advantages, you'd need a list. I just hope it's as good as the first one. I'm a huge JLaw fan and think idiots ought to give her and other celebrities a measure of privacy and I despise using illegal tactics to invade their lives. I hope people are caught made to answer for their actions.

The Hobbit could also, but since it's opening in December, would that count if it went into January???

Well, according to most, there are two types of NEWS. CNN and FoxNews. Both seem to have an agenda but we are not here to talk politics. LOL!

I tried to find out what film from 35 years ago they were referring to. I did a search for Movies released in August 1976 and so far nothing.

I thought it would've been Jaws, but that was released in June apparently.

I feel obliged to point out that you're three years off. Thirty-five years ago would be August 1979. The answer would be The Amityville Horror.

If it's almost 35 years, you might try 1979 and a little more recent because, well, that was 35 years ago.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. We must have sent it in at about the same time.

Those number look a bit on the paltry side these days, don't they? I can hear my mother telling me about a time when a dime would get you into a movie, and you could buy popcorn and a drink too. And further more........

EDIT: Oops.....Look in December of '79

Kramer vs. Kramer Drama $106,260,000

More than Amityville's 86M. Maybe some of that came in '80 and doesn't count???

Yeah, I saw that amount for Kramer and assumed that the bulk was made in 1980, especially with its Oscar noms keeping it in play for a while. There's no way it would've made $106M in just a couple of weeks.

I looked over the next couple years and didn't see anything that came close. The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark (in the next 2 years) both came close to $300M. Those are just monstrous numbers for 1980 and 81.
