I got one of those too but it's the double pack pre-order for Nov 1st, seems like the same deal $20 for the 4 discs, really puts in perspective how horrible Shout Factory retail is

I literally had the same experience as well, worked first few times then all of a sudden at one point froze my player than another time it got stuttered on some scenes, I never damaged the disc and all I did was leave it in it's case idk what gives? Same story with my wizard of oz 4k even tho I bought both brand new in 2019

It's because you're using a Sony 4K player. You should avoid any discs that are triple-layer (100GB) with that player.

Trying to play now and just reads forever and then says, “Content owner certification was not verified. Internet access will be prohibited for BD live contents while the disc is played.” Then black screen.

Using Panasonic 820; bought disc in 2019 and watched a couple times before…may have not been this machine, had Sony X700 that died.

Afaik the access to BD live content is often temporarily finite. So maybe it just expired for The Shining. If the discs contains a link to some BD live content before the main menue (e. g. for a trailer or so) the player tries to access this and is rejected.

Yea, BD-Live is long dead, so just go into the player's network settings and disable it. I watched this on Panasonic's cheapo model last night with no issues.

I turned it off. Still won’t play.

That's strange. You might have to clear the metadata on the player or any thumb drives you have attached to it. That solved a problem I had long ago.

Will give it a try, thanks.

Edit:
Never had a thumb drive plugged in before. But put one in and went to erase BD-Video Data ErSe in setup menu. Nothing changed.

Then again, Player Settings —> System —> Restore Default Settings

Still won’t play.

Also not connected to Internet anymore.

Looking to restore completely to factory settings but cannot seem to find it.

Edit 2:
Restored the player. Model DP-UB820 https://eng-ca.faq.panasonic.com/app...eset---blu-ray

Reset the unit as follows:
Turn the unit off.
Example of remote buttons used in this process
Press and hold the [OK], [Y] and [B] buttons on the remote at the same time for more than 5 seconds. “00 RET” is displayed on the unit’s display.
Press the arrow right ►Right Arrow button repeatedly on the remote control until “08 FIN” is displayed on the unit’s display.
Press and hold the [OK] button on the remote control for more than 5 seconds.

Reading, then stops and goes to screensaver. No message about BD-live this time.

Thanks but looks like it’s not gonna play.

Just bought an LG OLED C2, and LG UBK-80 and UBKM9 (when I realized that I should've bought a player with DV). Lo and behold this title was marked down. AVS forum review (Ralph Potts) and BR.com review both made this a no-brainer purchase, and a reference quality "demo" for the 4k UHD HDR format. (BTW, for those having player issues, Consumer Reports rated the UBK-90 highest, and gave it and the -80 the fastest load times for HD and UHD discs in their tests. I concur. Not a lot of bells & whistles on these players, just wickedly fast load and good picture.)

Plays great on the UBKM9, DV activated on load. Compared a few telltale scenes between the Blu-ray Disc and UHD Disc, and clearly the same master ... with subtle improvements from the 4K format. Does DV over HDR10 do more? Couldn't tell. Don't care. Dynamic color and pop of the movie is like seeing it in 1980 at San Francisco's Coronet Theater all over again. The definition in some darker areas is uncanny. So glad I happened to check this site's home page.

THIS. Great comments. Congratulations on your new display. I love my 77" LG OLED, which pairs beautifully with my oppo 203.

The daily complaints on this forum about how there isn't "enough of a drastic jump in detail between blu ray and 4k uhd" to warrant 4k purchases, are totally missing the mark. I've NEVER popped a standard blu ray in, and felt like I suddenly owned my own personal print of a 35mm film. But with the stunning and several noteworthy benefits of the 4k uhd format beyond just simple increased resolution, paired with a high-quality display....4k uhd discs give me this awesome sensation fairly often. I don't need a 4k uhd release to make the prior blu ray disc look like a vhs tape. I want the 4k uhd to simply convince my brain that I'm experiencing something as close as humanly possible to 16mm or 35mm film. That's something that the fairly limited blu ray format can never achieve, on its specs alone, but 4k uhd can and does achieve, in many cases. Even just the ability of 4k to finally render and resolve film grain as naturally as possible is usually worth the price of admission for me.

If anybody is curious about the shorter European cut and hasn't seen it, it just popped up streaming for free on Tubi here in the U.S.

Yes as soon as I read your post I queued it up. Tubi app says 1 hours 59 minutes 35 seconds. Definitely has that Blu-Ray stream quality to it though. Definitely feels like a downgrade after having the 4K Disc for the past 3 years. But, I gotta see what they cut in this version.

How utterly random. It’s definitely the Euro cut as there’s no doctor scene. No special label/info to differentiate it from the standard USA cut. Assume it’s a mistake?

The Euro cut also popped up on Netflix some years back, but was replaced shortly thereafter by the U.S. cut. Maybe somebody at Warner Brothers REALLY likes the shorter European cut so they keep sneaking it out there

Chris

The Uncut The Shining version = 10/10 Movie.

Int. Cut & T.V. Cut Render The Shining a 7.5/10 Movie.

Just buy the 4K disc guys.

The international cut and tv cut I'm sure are two different things so I'm not sure why you would rate them together.
I don't think the international cuts anything important. It's very similar feeling to the US at a brisker pace.

The international cut eliminates every reference to Jack's alcoholism. I personally rate that as being pretty important myself. I wonder if Kubrick did that intentionally to further piss off King, since that was one of the holdovers from the novel and King had already started complaining about the film at that point.
