As a bonus fun fact, it's actually a bit of an anomaly that ADV published the On Air versions as the default video release. In Japan, the laser disc and VHS releases had the Director's Cut as the default video version, with the On Air episodes only appearing on a bonus disc/tape for those with proof of purchase of the whole set.

The Classics discs will have DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio for each language. Although the specs doesn't specify if they're exclusive to those discs.

With that said, it makes me wonder about the video quality aspect of the Classics discs. Are they gonna look exactly the same as the Official discs? If so, the only difference between those discs are just swapping out the audio tracks? I can understand including the ADV dub, but what's the difference between the Japanese audio from both versions? If there's no difference, then all that's left is just the stereo mix? For the purists that want the 2.0 mix as presented during broadcast?

ADV Films were in a situation in which they didn't want to wait for the "Video Format" versions of 21'-24' (aka "Director's Cuts") as seen in the Japanese releases of "Genesis 0:11" and "Genesis 0:12" since their release date had been pushed back several times. To wit:
  • Genesis 0:11 delays: August '96 -> October '96 -> December '96 -> February '97 -> February '98 (18 months)
  • Genesis 0:12 delays : September '96 - October '96 -> January '97 -> March '97 -> July '98 (20 months)
ADV's VHS release had already broken cadence by a month due to the less-severe delays in materials from "Genesis 0:10", but even then there was a 3 month gap between the 10th and 11th volumes despite having to resort to the broadcast versions of Episodes 21-22 as the source material.

Looking back at the historical release dates of the US and Japanese VHS releases, had ADV Films waited for the "Video Format" of 21'-24' the gap in their releases would've approached 6-9 months for both the 11th and 12th volumes. In the era of "Big Box" media stores that the late '90s represented, you couldn't string along your corporate buyers indefinitely like that. It would've killed all the retail momentum that the first 10 releases had already built up.

Actually... with how the ADV dub is separated in the Ultimate and Collector's editions, I'm wondering if GKIDs would try to arm pull Khara to have a separate standard release with only the ADV dub depending how successful the current releases are... Unlikely, sure. But it's easy for them to do that with how it is.

There are two ADV dubs - one which first came out on VHS which had the on-air episodes, then one which was re-dubbed when they got the license for the Director's Cut episodes and Renewal (i.e. Platinum)

Since it's been confirmed that it's a 5.1 audio mix, and that it's Director's Cut only, that almost certainly means it's the ADV redub (original ADV VHS dub was 2.0 audio, and did not cover Director's Cut).
ADV did not redub the series when they got the Renewal footage; they only remixed their existing dub in 5.1. They considered redubbing it from scratch, but Matt Greenfield thought the original dub was too well-known, and compared redubbing it to the Star Wars special editions. All they redubbed was:
1. Redubbing this single line at Gainax's request:
2. Redubbing the next episode previews (since the new footage didn't match the old previews).
3. Dubbing the previously undubbed footage in the director's cut versions of episodes 21-24.
4. Redubbing some characters in episodes 21-24 where their original voice actors couldn't return (this includes Gendo, Kaworu, Ibuki, Aoba, and Pen-Pen).
5. Redubbing those same characters (and only those characters) in 25-26 for consistency. The Platinum editions credit the original VAs by mistake, but have the partially redubbed versions.

If you want the original 2.0 version of ADV's dub, it's available on the Perfect collection DVDs.

Where does it state that? In the specs on the ATA mini site it doesn't state specifically. But I'm pretty sure that on Twitter GKids said that the classic dub was in 5.1, but I forget now.

Because it has a 2.0 Original Mix, it leads to quite a few extra questions.

They said on Twitter a couple weeks back that it was the original Japanese 2.0 mix that was prepared to match the Renewal footage.

So it's just a downmix from the 5.1 track (as with the ADV dub, if they're really not including the OA episodes). Kinda insidious to call it "Classic", but I digress.

I'm glad that the base tv collection is so cheap and that it includes the movies! Already listed my original platinum tin box version on ebay for auction so I can get it and have money left over.

Because it has a 2.0 Original Mix, it leads to quite a few extra questions.
It doesn't say if it's talking about Japanese 2.0 or English 2.0 though. And it doesn't say what's on what disc in terms of audio.

Pretty sure they said on Twitter it's "a" 5.1 "classic" English dub mix, which leads me to suspect it's the one from the ADV Platinum DVDs. Which also makes sense since it's DC only.

As I said, the specs are vague on where the 2.0 Original Mix applies.

The details should be more clear once these sets are in our hands (or reviewers' hands so customers would know in advance).

Interestingly, it seems like Madman has what appears to be a placeholder page for a Rebuild collection set as well?

I'm pretty sure Madman already has the first three Rebuild films and never lost the license.

You might be right on that point. Looking at the "Rebuild" BD releases from Manga UK, you can see that Funi had a hand in them as show by their company's logo being placed besides NTV's on the cover art.

Conversely, I looked at the cover art of Madman's BD releases of all three films to date and the only logos present were theirs and NTV's. I even checked the fine print credits at the bottom of the back cover to make sure.

As such, it's certainly possible that Madman avoided being caught in the wake of Khara's displeasure which was clearly targeted towards Funimation. Other territories also have their Rebuild BDs still in print, such as Hong Kong's releases from NeoFilms.

In hindsight, maybe the 2.0 Original Mix as GKids listed applies only to the movies, since they were released as such, at least on Japan's home video releases.

That still doesn't change the question if they'll be available on both the Official and Classic discs.

Is there any noticeable difference in quality between Funimation's release and the HK releases? I just recently rewatched the Funimation blu-ray's and didnt notice anything negative.

Viewed on a Panny 820 and 65" Samsung FYI.

Never thought I'd see the day.. I'd spend roughly the same amount on the bluray as I did on the original Perfect Collection set back in the day.

Looking at the Godzilla size of the ultimate edition box a vinyl record slip should fit inisde. Interesting, that gives me some options.

Gonna keep my ultimate preorder since the collectors edition for me is around 50usd cheaper, though the only thing I somewhat care about among the UC stuff is the book. Looks like about 100 or so people cancelled their UC order today, tho the stock is almost back down to 100.

Kind of a letdown they didn't manage any kind of soundtrack for these releases, though its all available elsewhere.
Even the 1000 copy Cowboy Bebop UC that wasted most of its cost on the vinyl case had 3 music CDs included.

Don't think GKIDS have any say as they just partnered with ATA to bring it to the North America irrc.
