Miami is taking the responsibility of their actions with their self imposed bowl ban, I really hope the NCAA remembers this when they decide on punishment. Regardless, I don't think either Ohio State or Miami are going to get hit too hard. Now Penn State on the other hand...

Miami isn't taking responsibility for their actions, they are just trying to get off easier with the NCAA because they were going to play in a crap bowl. I guarantee you Miami wouldn't have self-imposed a bowl ban if they were 10-2.

win or lose LSU is ridiculously good. They have the toughest schedule of any top team that I can ever remember. Isn't this their first home game against one of the good teams? They're beating everyone on the road.

If they win today it'll be their third win against a Top 3 team. That's amazing.

I'm going to have to respectively disagree with you there. Miami is absolutely taking responsibility for their actions with the self imposed bowl ban. They know what happened at the university with the Shapiro scandal was very wrong. As a well respected academic institution, they couldn't sit around and do nothing. It was very important for us to show the rest of the country and most importantly the NCAA that we want to change for the better. And what better way to do that than take away postseason play. We did the right thing with this move fate, that is undeniable.

Yes, but my point is they were going to play in a crap bowl this year, so knowing they were likely going to face a future bowl ban they would rather try and take the punishment now while they are down rather than in the future when they may be in contention for a BCS bowl. I would have taken the bowl ban a lot more seriously if they had announced it before the season but they waited until their season was already down the drain to make the decision.

Yes - here's who LSU beat:

Home - Kentucky, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, W. Kentucky, Northwestern St.
Road - Mississippi St., West Virginia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama
Neutral site - Oregon

Even their non-conference schedule was very tough. They had to win @ West Virginia and against Oregon outside of their brutal SEC schedule. One of the toughest schedules I've ever seen for an undefeated team.

Come on fate. I think it was pretty obvious from the statement from Shalala and Eichorst, that this was a decision made by the big wigs to show that Miami is being proactive in getting change moving for the program. The size of the bowl is besides the point, it's the principle that we are putting first. It's been known for most of the season that Miami was not going to a big bowl game. We simply aren't that good of a team right now. I'm quite sure this was in the plans for pretty much the whole season. The university had to act, and I am damn proud they did.

Alabama is going to run the score up on Auburn big time tomorrow since it will be their last game of the season (and don't forget what happened last year in the Iron Bowl at Bryant-Denny...)

Then, OSU is gonna hope to do the same thing to OU in the Bedlam game and to whomever in the Big 12ish championship game.

Another interesting scenario is if UGA manages to beat LSU in the SEC championship game next Saturday -- then does LSU drop out of the top 2?

Personally, I think I'd rather see OSU get a shot at LSU in the national title game rather than Alabama get a second shot. But on the other hand, one could argue that the only team to stop Alabama was the #1 team in the nation and that OSU suffered its loss to an unranked team.

This season appears to have turned into a redux of the 2001 season, except with slightly less drama. 2001 is still the all-time messiest BCS season. (Look up the late-season shenanigans with Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon, Nebraska, and Colorado if you're really curious.)

Source - http://espn.go.com/college-football/...extension-2020

Quote:
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami coach Al Golden has agreed to terms on a four-year extension, meaning he is now under contract with the Hurricanes through Feb. 1, 2020.

The move was announced in the fourth quarter of the Hurricanes' season-finale against Boston College on Friday, somewhat unusual timing for a gesture. Golden has repeatedly said in recent weeks that his family is happy in Miami and that he was looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding the Hurricanes back to the ranks of the national elite.

"We have embraced the community and we could not be more excited about the future of the Miami Hurricanes football team," Golden said in a release distributed by the university. "I can't thank president (Donna) Shalala and (athletic director) Shawn Eichorst enough for their support and commitment to our student-athletes and staff. We are ready to hit the recruiting road and begin our preparations for the 2012 season."

For now, anyway, it would end rampant speculation about Golden's future.

Golden has said he was unaware of allegations made by a former Miami booster when he went through the interview process with the Hurricanes a year ago, and was "shocked" when the claims were publicly detailed by convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro in a story published by Yahoo! Sports in August. The NCAA and the university have been conducting a dual investigation into those claims for months, and the Hurricanes are expected to face sanctions when that probe ends.

And when the subsequent scandal at Penn State -- Golden's alma mater -- broke in recent weeks, leading to the firing of his mentor Joe Paterno, Golden's name was circulated as a potential candidate there as well.

"I look forward to working side-by-side with coach Golden for many years," Eichorst said. "Al has done a fantastic job of rebuilding and solidifying the foundation of our football program while fostering success both on and off of the field. He has been a first-class representative of our university and I am confident that with Al leading the way, our future is very bright."

It ends a wild week of news at Miami.

On Sunday, the university self-imposed a bowl ban for 2011 that school officials said was "necessary" in response to the NCAA probe. Players were informed that afternoon that Friday's game against Boston College would end the season, even though the Hurricanes had enough wins to qualify for a postseason appearance.

Miami is not self-imposing any other penalties, including a reduction in scholarships, and Golden said Monday that he was told he will have a full complement of scholarships available for the class that will sign in 2012.

The scandal started in earnest in August by allegations made by Shapiro, who said he gave 72 Miami football players and recruits so-called "extra benefits" like money, cars, yacht rides, nightclub and strip-club access and even prostitutes from 2002 through 2010. Earlier this season, 12 Miami players were sanctioned by the NCAA for dealings with Shapiro, with penalties ranging from small restitution in four cases, a one-game ban for five others and bans of four to six games for three more.

Shapiro is serving a 20-year prison sentence for masterminding a Ponzi scheme.

When asked Sunday by The Associated Press about his future, Golden said he doesn't "have any decisions to make" and that he's preparing to move "the program forward, as I've said a million times."

That was an inexcusable final game of the season loss for Miami. Boston College is a terrible 4-8 team. My own crappy UCF team crushed BC earlier in the season 30-3. Miami should have won that one easily. Instead they finished 6-6.

Currently Miami has a very solid #11 ranked national recruiting class for 2012. Not bad for a team still in the middle of an investigation.

Prior to this extension and (presumable) pay raise, he was making in the neighborhood of $2 million per year.

Edit - And how in the HELL is UCLA going to the Pac-12 title game?

I just don't want an LSU/Alabama rematch. I'm begging for an Auburn win tomorrow, I'm hoping for the classic rivalry upset.

I hate the current bowl system, but I really do think LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the nation right now. Though it does feel weird potentially having a team that didn't even win it's division of it's own conference making a national championship game.

I suppose Alabama loses Oklahoma St. would be next in line for the national title game. But OK St. has a tough game against Oklahoma still to play. If both Alabama and Oklahoma St. lose it would probably be a very close vote between Virginia Tech and Stanford for the right to play LSU.

Boise St. picked a VERY bad year to drop a game. They would have had their best chance ever to make the national title game had they just run the table.

Refer to the 2001 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The 2-loss, 14th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes defeated the at-the-time unbeaten (and I think #2-ranked) Cornhuskers 62-36 in the penultimate week of the season. Then, Colorado went on to upset the #3ish ranked Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship game.

The final human polls had Larry Coker's Miami Hurricanes as the undisputed #1, the Colorado Buffaloes/Oregon Ducks were #2/3 (I forget which was which... the Ducks had one loss; the Buffaloes had two losses but those huge season-ending victories). The one-loss Cornhuskers were #4. And they didn't even play for their conference championship.

Guess whom the BCS formula chose for the Hurricanes to play in the title game? (by a margin of five hundredths of a point, no less!) And take a guess as to whether the title game was even close.

Here's looking at you, BCS.
