Manhattan
Match Point
Vicky Cristina Barcelona

The question for me is "how many works by a director would you think it's necessary to see until you can call them terrible?" Apart from Manhattan (which I found reasonably enjoyable), the rest of them were pretty dire. One one hand I feel I should persist - because 5 films is not a very big sample of his work - but on the other maybe I just don't get Woody Allen and should give up.
Watch Annie Hall, obviously
Crimes & Misdemeanors
Hannah & Her Sisters
Love & Death
Husbands & Wives
The Purple Rose of Cairo (the original Midnight In Paris, sorta)

Aside from Manhattan, those are my favorites. Still lots of great Woody left for you!

Which sets did you get for the sale?

This goes for a lot of Italian directors actually...

Very happy to discover that my 'White' disc in the Three Colors Trilogy from the Barnes and Noble sale that just arrived bears the words "Second Printing". I was expecting to have to mail it in to Criterion for the fixed disc. I remember at least one poster was wondering.

No worries. It's happy blame. I'm looking forward to it, although it looks like B&N isn't shipping it for a few weeks.

I know the feeling, my entire order shipped on the 11th but I am not expecting it until sometime the week of August 13, it always take that long when I order from B&N

My friend from Norway just posted this to another forum.

Quote:
Imdb now set the bar at 25000 votes for inclusion in the Top 250 list, up from
3000. This has led to silent movies and non-USA movies disappearing.

USA 173 (+13)
UK 23 (−1)
Italy 10 (−1)
Japan 10 (−6)
France 7 (−4)
Germany 5
Sweden 4 (−1)

Gone from top 250: Harakiri, Come & See, High & Low, Le samourai, Throne of
Blood, Memories of Murder, Tokyo Story, Nights of Cabiria, Kind Hearts &
Coronets, Wages of Fear, Judgment at Nuremberg, Le grande illusion, The Best
Years of Our Lives, Ikiru, Sunrise, The Battle of Algiers, Fanny & Alexander,
Les Diaboliques, Sherlock Jr, Anatomy of a Murder, the Passion of Joan of Arc.

New: The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Harvey (1950), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Per
un pugno di dollari (1964), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), In the Name of the Father
(1993), Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom (2003), Rain Man (1988), La Dolce
vita (1960), Big Fish (2003), In the Heat of the Night (1967), Rio Bravo (1959),
The Searchers (1956), Ed Wood (1994), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), King Kong
(1933), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), His Girl Friday (1940), The
Philadelphia Story (1940), Patton (1970), Fa yeung nin wa (2000), The
Untouchables (1987), Papillon (1973)

In my view this makes the Top 250 much less interesting.

Well that knocked it down to 86 titles I haven't watched on that list yet, and most of them are the non-foreign action films. Also the top 250 has always been hogwash, seeing as The Dark Knight Rises is already at 10.

I'm a little surprised to see so many Woody Allen lists and no sign of Take the Money and Run.

In a lot of ways it's one the purest Woody Allen movies in that he himself hadn't really become a character/charicature/institution/Idon'tknowwhichwordI'mlookingfor yet.

Well, that's sad. I always thought that the IMDb list was lacking in its foreign (well, foreign to the US) content, and it seems that this will make it even worse. And really, The Dark Knight Rises at #10? I'm no snob by any means, but this is both far too quickly, and entirely undeserved.

Agreed. Looks like most of the foreign films were replaced by American films. They should have some way of filtering votes based on location and figuring out a list from there.. Most Americans have questionable tastes in entertainment IMO.

I mean The Nightmare Before Christmas in, Kind Hearts and Coronets out ?

One of them has 25,000 reviews, one of them doesn't.

I don't know if 25,000 is the right threshhold but 3,000? I would have never guessed the old cutoff was that low.

To be fair Imdb top 100 or 250 is pretty much worth nothing. It's nothing more then people going to give 5 stars (or ten) to every movie they see every weekend making them go

WEEK 1 = Best movie I ever saw was EPIC

WEEK 2 = This was AMAZING never seen a better movie (really? What happen to week one?)

WEEK 3 = I just came in my pants this is the GREATEST movie ever (wow! you sure have a short attention span)

WEEK 4 = I don't think i ever said this before but BEST FREAKIN MOVIE EVER (you should see a specialist about your problem)

For me these Imdb list =

Although I loved it, it's not even in my top 25 (top 50 though). Le Samouraļ is in my top 10.
