Like most things in life, I'm not as died in the wool on either side of this topic. I've collected all manner of physical media available to me throughout my life.. I've built large collections and have had them taken from me. I've carted boxes of cd's and DVDs to the charity shop as I've moved on from one format to the other. I've had all manner if hardware die on me.
I will always have a physical copy of worthy titles in the best prevailing format at any given time and way too many of unworthy titles lol...
I will more often than not stream a movie that I want to see if it is available earlier than on disc and then buy the disc later...I will even choose the buy option on the stream when it is less than a $5 premium over the rent option...I know that I don't "own" the stream but am less sure than most on this thread that my physical library is "forever ".....
I have the equipment and better than 20/20 corrected vision to see the difference but am glad that with few exceptions the streaming quality is more than acceptable for the majority of throw away titles i watch.

I've experienced rot in both LD and DVD days but can only think of one major issue with a title on bluray...INGLORIOUS BASTERDS from my TARANTINO box set glitches and refused to play one night... The disc was in pristine condition because it was one of the few discs that I took care of... My main gripe with physical media being that I don't like being careful with my things... I bought a standalone bluray from AMAZON and watched the title thenext night..it has subsequently been replaced by the UHD..

On the other hand, I routinely use the SEASON OF THE WITCH disc from my HALLOWEEN boxset as a beer coaster and, last time I checked, it still works flawlessly..

Another day another instant loss of Vitrual content.

"Digital distribution platform Itch.io has removed all adult games and books from its store, making them inaccessible to user.

The decision to remove all adult games and books from Itch.io (via dominictarason) was done due to restrictions from online payment processors. The front page of the digital distribution platform has left no trace of adult content, even for those who had opted to keep it visible. Not only can the platform’s users no longer purchase adult games or books, those who had previously bought them will also no longer be able to access or download them. They are likely to have been deleted permanently."

The only thing more certain than the fact these services routinely and instantly disappear is someone will chime in claiming they never lost anything.

I was never under any delusion that my physical media would last forever, especially now that I have daily reminders of my own mortality.

I have long made it a practice to make back-ups of my rarer titles for that very reason. If I believed that my discs would last "forever" there would be no need for back-ups and no need for all of the blank optical media that I have on-hand for that purpose.

I am more concerned with retaining the exact version of the movie and TV show that I purchased. With my discs I do not have to concern myself with political correctness running amok and retro-editing out any sections of a movie or TV show currently deemed offensive. I do not have to worry about right's issues causing changes to a film's soundtrack. I also do not have to worry about revisionist remasters or the more recent ham-handed usage of AI in the remastering process.

I also get to retain all of the extra features with my disc purchases, many of which fail to migrate to later editions. When I do buy the "new & improved" edition I often keep the older edition for this reason and also to have it as a back-up copy. Again, if I felt that physical media was infallible I would not even think about the need for back-ups.

There's also the obvious advantage for physical media: better A/V quality in most instances: DVD> SD stream, Blu-ray> HD stream (and often times > 4K stream), and 4K blu-ray> 4K stream.

I use digital codes/ purchases to share movies and TV shows with my friends because there is no way on this big beautiful Earth that I am lending anyone my discs. No one respects your property as much as you do yourself.

I also use digital purchases and subscription streaming as a cheap way to sample stuff that I am unsure about buying on disc much in the same way that I once did with cable TV.

Streaming does four things for me:

1. it is a sample platter.

2. it grants remote access when away from home.

3. It allows me to share stuff without risking harm to my discs.

4. It acts as sort of a back-up to my discs.

As a gamer, this development has been more something my son had been following...We had an interesting discussion about it this morning as I drove him to the train station.

As he has explained to me, this has to do with payment companies putting pressure on stores in order to police content...which is millions of times worse than any of the imagined concerns we discuss on this thread about content disappearing...

This is homegrown religious nutcase fervor dictating personal choice on this side of the planet...I have no time for any of this...it's bad news here, there and everywhere..

Please remind all of those people, especially abroad, about their "imagined concerns" over all of the content that they lost when Ultraviolet closed.

Remind Wendell about his "imagined concerns" when he lost content when a particular digital store closed.

Remind stonesfan129 of his family's "imagined concerns:"

I've never worried about losing access to a title by way of my physical disc being rendered useless or it being taken off of a digital platform... to me these are imagined as I believe that when the market works as it should, I will always be able to buy what I want as long as there is a demand.... this is very different... this is our homegrown version of the Taliban trying ... and incredulously succeeding ...in circumventing the market based on their idiotic "values"..

That has not been my experience; Song Of The South says "hello" here. There has been no official release of it since the Japanese laserdisc edition on Sept. 25, 1990.

Waiting for titles to become available again is a game that can require ample patience and considerable time with no guarantees of it ever happening. Our supply of the latter is very finite and it only ever decreases.

I am not even sure what this is supposed to mean. Not everything is removed or altered due to intolerance of the material; the reason for it can be as mundane as a rights dispute or other legal kerfluffle.

How often do I get to use "kerfluffle" in a post? I'm easily amused.

On a brighter note I have completed my Stewart Filmscreen install. My next project will be to calibrate the JVC RS3200. Will need to do a center channel check of EQ because the Stewart is different from the Da-Lite screen.

I have that Japanese LD and no player to play it with... I've also seen the movie theatrically...I fully support Disney's right to do with their title what they please even if I don't agree with their reasons...This credit card thing is a whole other level of censorship... with a certain religious group exerting an inordinate amount of power in the US with repercussions for more moderate thinking countries.

My previous two audio upgrades had proven to me that, at my age, I've lost the desire to stare at target curves and make endless adjustments....With my recent addition of wide channels, I was actually dreading the process..

This time, i finally broke down and tried something that I previously followed as something of a curiosity in audio quackery.... I'll be damned, but if you have a Denon or Marantz product, the A1 EVO project by OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE AUDIOPHILE is the real deal... you still have to take your mic measurements but he's even automated that to a degree. His script works directly with REW and can consolidate days of work into minutes... it's actually fun again experimenting with various house curves...

I am in the opposite situation: I have a working laserdisc player, but I do not have this laserdisc. The Japanese laserdisc goes for around $200-$250 on fleabay; the Hong Kong one can go for over $1300.

I disagree about Disney's right to be a coward and not release this movie to modern audiences, but I do not want to reopen that particular can of worms any further than I just did. This topic usually devolves quickly.

Credit card companies should not be able to dictate what a store sells, if that's the crux of the matter. Banks suck.

I can't say how it compares to the video game, but it was a fun watch.

Streamed DANGEROUS ANIMALS last night and thought it would be right up your alley...

I was halfway through when I checked to find that it was streaming in vanilla DD+... which turned out to be a bonus as I learned that the latest version of the DSU (which came stock on the A1H) includes wide channel support... did I mention that wide channels are AWESOME!

Yeah, payment processors have way too much power. It would seem the environment is ripe for some entrepeneur to create a payment system that caters to adult entertainment.

I attended Ozzy concerts at least 3 times maybe 5.
(When I was younger concerts and drugs were very cheap. I do remember 3 of them though.)
(Had my tickets for Ozzy with Motley Crue 1984 tour confiscated by an abusive uncle because of something his son did and was arrested for which wasn't fair especially to the person who was going to go with me who wasn't even there.)
