There wasn't that much stuff that needs subtitling, that's if you are referring to making-off featurettes. There is only about 20 minutes of stuff like it that would need new subtitles. I guess there is the Live-Action End of Evangelion scenes which would be cool, but I don't remember if the were available in the U.S. DVD Release?

I thought the lack of English subs would take me out of it but once the first frame came on I was totally into the show. However, I've only watched End of Evangelion once and I don't remember much about it.

Nope, the live-action EoE scenes weren't on the US release. Of course, the US release was in 2002 and the Japanese Renewal DVD box where that scene was first released on video was put out in 2003.

The extras that I'd really like to see subtitled were the Eva BD set to come Stateside are the "Genesis 0:0 - IN THE BEGINNING" and "Genesis 0:0' - THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS" promotional videos for the TV series and D&R respectively. They're both about 30 minutes apiece, though.

Am too much of a EoE geek, have lost count of the amount of times have seen it. If am not mistaken, EoE was shot on 35mm, should look absolutely gorgeous on Blu-ray.

Am like one click away from ordering.

Edit: Just ordered. My total, shipped, came out to $251.78. Delivery estimate is for this weekend.

It's a Japanese release bro, what're you worrying about?

I've put the stats for disc one in the spoiler. I just ripped the video along with 2.0 PCM though. The 37+ bitrate should be more than sufficient, given the 4:3 image.

I'm almost through the regular episodes. I found some subs out there on the interwebs, and they mostly fit as long as you line them up with the first few lines in Cruel Angel's Thesis.

There was one instance though, in the Yashima episode, just about where they fired the big rifle. They must have added a second or two of video there, as the subs were early by that the rest of the way. I didn't pay attention to how the subs fit for previews, but I haven't noticed anything bad there.

The most bothersome stuff is when they've mixed extended episodes with the normal ones, on the last two discs. That's a bit annoying to work with The secondary subs are also below the primary subs, so the ones I have probably aren't ones one should commit to disc. But they work, the translation is fine and there aren't too many mistakes.

I don't know if the ones I found are from the original release or the platinum one.

It's really too bad that ep 16 is only in SD. That huge blood shower at the end would've looked AMAZING in high definition.

I think you're confusing Aniplex imports sold at Right Stuf with Aniplex of America releases. If you don't like the Persona 3 movies having subs only for the main feature, then wait and see if they're released as proper AoA releases.

Also, the movies are $60 each. Buying Limited Editions is a privilege, not a right.

Nice work.

It is really too bad they lost the 16mm film for ep16. I hope they at least did a good job (or at least the best they could possibly do) with the upscale.

I still have my R1 platinum collection DVD's. I may do some comparison shots between them and the JP BDs. I think I still also have my crap mangle EoE DVD, may do some comparison shots for that one too.

Many times AoA will be missing video extras from the Japanese release, so even if they wait, they'll be just getting a more barebones release compared to the Japanese one. And they'll gimp you on booklet content as well.

I think the upscale was limited a lot by what they had to work with. Of course, it probably seems worse than it is, given the treat the 15 episodes before it were.

My ripping and subbing process was the simplest possible, by the way. I just ripped the titles on the discs, video and 2.0 PCM as mentioned, and combined the single episode subs to match. It's tedious work, but each disc really doesn't take that long to finish. The subs are very acceptable, with the biggest problem being my Oppo BDP-103's outline on subs created from SRT files. They're not thick enough, so it's easy for them to disappear.

Obviously, that's not a problem should one go for broke and mux them into something. The future will tell what'll happen for the extended episodes and all those different End versions. I'm fine with the regular eps for now.

Their older releases (Ex: Madoka LE's, Read or Die BD box), their older imports which didn't have the ridiculous markup over Amazon Japan (Rurouni Kenshin BD's), the video quality, the audio quality (When they didn't do lossy Dolby Digital for the English dub on BD's), physical extras (Despite the gimping. Without it I'd like their stuff much, much more), the fact they'll have their stuff for streaming so you can try before you buy, and that's about it. I liked them A LOT more in say 2011-2013. If they went back that, cared about older titles, and released more shows that are rotting on streaming, they'd be much better overall.

I took the subs (and dub) from the Platinum releases. The dub was fine, the subs were easy enough to work with timings-wise, but could look a lot better - even though it's just text onscreen they clearly look SD on a HD picture. I'll have to replace them in the future.

I watched the Yashima episode the other night, dub though. No problem with that. Will need to check the subs timing.

The extended episodes aren't too bad to work with, they were on the Platinum releases as well so once you figure out which episodes are which on the JP discs they should be as easy to do as the other episodes.

Only thing I've had a problem with is the Death & Rebirth movie. Lots of timing issues there.

All in all though, if you have the Platinum subs/dub then I found them much easier to work with than the subs/dub tracks from the ADV DVDs for my Macross work. An episode of EVA probably took about 15 minutes. Macross, dependent on the episode could take anywhere between 15 minutes to a couple of hours.

The reason that the movies have timing problems is that the US releases were based off of the original pre-Renewal DVDs from 1999, and for the 2003 Renewal (and the 2015 BDs which used the same editorial flow) each individual scene/cut could have a different run-time by several frames as compared to the old DVDs. The same thing would happen if you tried to take the subs off of the original 2000-2002 ADV DVDs of the series (the ones before the 2004 Platinum release) and tried to use them on the Blu-rays.

Also note that the US DVD for Death and Rebirth used the (True)² version of Death from 1998's "Revival of Evangelion" theatrical re-release, so you can't copy/paste the script for that to the "Death and Rebirth" Blu-ray (Disc #6), as that disc uses the original 1997 theatrical version that was never before released on home video and has additional scenes. However, it does correspond to the version of Death used in "Revival of Evangelion" (Disc #8) except for the obvious timing issues.

Thanks for the info svenge.

D&R is one that I'll fix at some point but it's not a massive priority for me. I'll be watching EoE (again), directly after the series, including the DCs - hence no particular need for either part.

How I typically watch the series is with 1-20, 21'-24' (DCs), and then Revival of Evangelion (i.e. Death[True]² / 25' Air / 26' Magokoro wo, Kimi ni) as it's arguably the closest to Anno's original vision of how the franchise was to unfold.

Never really cared for the original TV episodes 25-26 really, but I understand why they were made that way (as Gainax was out of both time and money).

I don't have any Platinum releases

That's probably what a disc would take me to do with the subs I found

I forgot that I had, until I found them!

I did mine by episode rather than by disc - converted the disc to MKV, then split each video down into the episodes, then ran each 'episode' through MKVMerge to merge in the sub/dub tracks.

Probably not the most efficient way of doing it, but got the job done

Also, the movies are $60 each. Buying Limited Editions is a privilege, not a right.
MSRP for regular movies is $74.99 with CEs being $99.99. They always "discount" both editions on release, to retail for $59.99 and 79.99 since they are so magnanimous. Keep in mind though, that only the US gets free shipping at $49+, in Canada you need to spend $249+ to get free shipping on Rightstuf. While Amazon US carries most of these releases as well, Amazon CA does not. Add on top of that the the exchange rate for the CAD has gone down the drain and I think you can see now why my jimmies are so rustled with these releases.

The exchange rate is crap for me too. That doesn't count though.

The otherwise fine subs I have are COMPLETELY messed up for episode 23. I haven't even dared to check the other non-extended episodes out. I've had to adjust by several seconds more than once already, and I'm only ten minutes in! Usually, as mentioned, it was fine as long as I adjusted the subs to match the OP.

Does anyone have some that are done? I could really use a hand here.
