It finally arrived and earlier than expected. It only took 2 months. No slipcover for slipcover fans. It is not gift-wrapped packaging and no "Discs made in Germany" stamp that I see on new Paramount titles. It is rewrapped I would guess.

I would pay $300 for all three seasons in 4K Blu-ray quality for the original series. Around 25 years ago the 480i DVD versions were $300 for all three seasons. An 8K or 4K scan with a 4K Blu-ray release would be awesome if it happens one day.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season One was released on the 4K Blu-ray format on May 16th 2023. This is the very first Star Trek TV series that was released on the 4K Blu-ray format (While all the Star Trek motion pictures have received a 4K Blu-ray disc release, the Star Trek TV series in the past have all been 2K Blu-ray disc releases). This TV series used native 4.5K digital cameras and a 4K master digital intermediate was created for the high bit rate 4K Blu-ray discs. On the 4K Blu-ray disc the HEVC video codec peeks into the 106Mbps range for some scenes. This 4K Blu-ray TV series uses Dolby Vision HDR. In the ideal world this TV series should have received a lossless 11.1 DTS X or lossless 13.1 Dolby Atmos soundtrack (or at least a lossless 7.1 DTS-HD Master soundtrack like some prior Star Trek TV series). But instead, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season One is in lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio. The only native 4K Dolby Vision HDR HEVC bonus feature is the audio commentary track for the first episode, all the rest of the bonus features is native 2K using the MPEG-4/AVC codec. Excellent 5.1 DTS-HD Master soundtrack. Because of limitations of my display the native 4K Dolby Vision HDR TV series was downscaled to 2K SDR quality. However, the high bit rate HEVC codec had a lot of detail and the picture looks better then any other Star Trek TV series that I have seen so far even though I am watching the TV series on a 2K display.
All episodes in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season one starts off with the brand-new rainbow logo with the pretty rainbow being created by the Starship Enterprise. For some reason when the rainbow logo is added in every Star Trek TV series, this results in all the onscreen menus when inserting a disc having no label that tells one the season number and disc number that was inserted (only the discs labels themselves for season one has the disc number and season number). **** I experienced perfect flawless playback of all three BD-100 discs on my year 2016 OPPO UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player. I did several reverse scans on all three BD-100 4K Blu-ray discs, and the discs were perfect and flawless in every way. There was absolutely zero player or disc glitches with this release. It appears that Paramount Pictures has mastered the science of stamping BD-100 discs with perfect reliability from what I experienced. Stamped optical discs like BD-100 discs have the potential to last up to 1,500 years if stamped correctly and stored correctly. And while no studio will guarantee an optical disc will last 1,500 years, a computer AI lifeform might be around 1,500 years from now to verify the discs still work. **** Season one Disc 1 = 92.8GB (perfect and flawless playback) Disc 2 = 92.8GB (perfect and flawless playback) Disc 3 = 90.5GB (perfect and flawless playback) *** The following below contains spoilers, so please do not read unless first watching the TV series on the 4K Blu-ray format *** Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Star Trek The Original Series. This fictional TV series takes place in the 23rd century around one decade before the original Star TV series that had Captain Kirk (the 1960’s TV series is the original Star Trek TV series). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season one follows captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise. In many ways Christopher Pike has the same moral code as Captain Kirk and possible even a higher moral code. I enjoyed seeing Captain Kirk and Spock in this TV series, however different actors play the characters Captain Kirk and Spock and that is why they look different when compared to the 1960’s TV series. I like the new young version of Nyota Uhura in this Star Trek TV series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is not rated (unrated) TV series according to the 4K Blu-ray disc jacket for season one and according to the Blu-ray.com database. The MPA never rates TV series and only rates movies. Most likely if the MPA did decide to rate this TV series it would receive a PG-13 for some episodes and a PG for others. One episode that shows the drinking of alcoholic beverages would most likely get a PG-13 from the MPA. And the one episode that in some ways looks similar to the alien chest buster from the classic 1979 Alien movie would easily earn a PG-13 with some bloody creature gore. However, according to the IMDb database this Star Trek: Strange New Worlds TV series received a TV-PG rating. While I understand that the majority of episodes could be MPA PG rated or TV-PG rated, there is at least one episode that should get a PG-13 or TV-14 rating in my opinion (the alien chest busting episode). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with Christopher Pike and Spock felt like a family friendly science fiction TV series with at least the first two episodes having the feel and integrity of the original Star Trek TV series from the 1960’s. People that liked the original 1960’s TV series with Captain Krik and Spock should in general enjoy this modern-day prequel that takes place in the 23rd century around a decade before the original Star Trek TV series. In season one Christopher Pike time travels which was interesting. In season one with the bonus features and deleted scenes, one learns that genetic engineering of human beings and all other intelligent alien lifeforms is against the law of the United Federation of Planets and the Starfleet organization. But in later Star Trek TV series in a century or two later the restrictions of genetic engineering of human beings are reduced with possible changes in the laws (more advanced cultures in future generations over the many centuries are able to map and modify the human and various alien DNA with excellent and positive results). While the 23rd Century Star Trek: Strange New Worlds TV series has made genetic engineering of humans and intelligent alien lifeforms against the law, however according to the first episode, Starfleet is allowed to use gene editing to make humans look like space aliens as long as those genetic changes only last several hours in order to spy on various alien cultures. In season one of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a little girl is sick and dying and a space alien with god like powers saves the little girl and gives her eternal life. Some episodes were interesting in season one while others were boring to me. The alien chest burster episode kind of felt like I was watching the 1979 Alien movie even though the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds chest busting alien creature was different when compared to the 1979 Alien movie. It was awesome seeing Spock defend himself with super human strength since he is half Vulcan and half human. It was briefly mentioned that Spock has a half brother and a half sister, which is something that people learned in the Star Trek Discovery TV series regarding Spock’s sister. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season One was created in 2022 in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is video material in the bonus features that shows people being quarantined and film crew and actors wearing COVID-19 masks to protect against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was released on the 4K Blu-ray format in steekbook packaging on 5-16-2023 and standard 4K Blu-ray packaging on 6-13-2023. I purchased the steelbook packaging on the release date and regardless of the packaging style one chooses, the three 4K Blu-ray BD-100 optical discs are the exact same disc image. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-...lu-ray/332605/ (steelbook packaging) https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-...lu-ray/337376/ (standard packaging) Last edited by HDTV1080P; 06-03-2025 at 12:09 AM. |
