I am concerned because this is the one trilogy you don't want to **** up. The prequels were horrible, but they were prequels and didn't involve the original legends. I do not want to see Luke Skywalker and Han Solo ruined in crappy movies.

Also, assuming the Emperor is actually returning, Abrams obviously has such a ****ing hard-on for the original trilogy that it's dangerous for the series.

WHy is it bad the Emperor is returning?
I think its a great idea.

He should at least come back as a ghost/spirit like Kinobi and Yoda do to Luke
He could come back and train a new apprentice (or two) from the beyond

Hes the one who told Vader he knew a way to cheat death

The emporer was the villain in the expanded universe, and is reportedly ageless in some stories.

It isn't out of ideas, it is keepin in with the universe as a whole.

I'm just dying for official casting announcements...all this speculation is killing me. I wanna see a press conference with JJ, Harrison, Mark and Carrie...it feels like ages since they announced this damn thing already.

People are going to be upset when they do announce the casting and find out that Chris Pine is Luke Skywalker, Carl Urban is Han Solo and Zoe Saldana is Leia. Also Leonard Nimoy will show up as Obiwan to explain how to defeat the Emperor.

I vote for Zoe Saldana in a metal bikini just for the hell of it.

So how much does two several weeks make us ?

Joking aside, I'm really glad for those (and quite jealous) who are so hyped over the upcoming Star Wars films. I know I'm not. Maybe the end result will manage to change my mind.

I understand they will be picking up some 20-30 years after the original trilogy so it remains to be seen what they do. I just hope it surprises us as fans and the purists just accept it for what it is now that the franchise is under someone else hands.
There's no such thing as canon books. The EU is not canon. Bringing back Palpatine is a ploy to get fans excited. "Oh, let's bring the Emperor back, even though it makes no sense and undermines the end of the OT."
It's like if you'd make a sequel to Jaws and bring back Quint.

If true, I'd say it's either to use him for

a.) Flashback scenes

or

b.) As a force ghost.

I don't think they would bring him back as if he never died.

To be honest, at this point I don't care if they cast Miley Cyrus as "Darth Twerk." I just want to see a good story and a proper send off of the original cast!

Yes, the books count as canon. Not as 'final' as the films and TV shows, but official enough that they are part of the universe and can and will influence the films.

And if the idea of the Emporer being alive seems too unofficial, remember that the Star Wars Holiday Special is considered top-level canon, so we could easily see references to Chewbacca's wife, kids and lecherous father celebrating life-day while Harvey Korman in drag dances to Jefferson Startship singing into a giant purple dong-shaped microphone--as official star wars canon.

The books are considered canon for now, but not for long (not all of them, anyway). Disney hired a specific group to perform a canon "purge" and I'm sure a lot of the current comics/novels are gonna go right out the window. Which is fine with me, even though I read all of them up to the New Jedi Order. I would rather the new films not be tied down with all of the expanded universe continuity.

This.

I think some of the books, like The Thrawn Trilogy and the Jedi Academy trilogy, may be left as canon. Probably 'Shadows of the Empire' as well. But I think most of it should be thrown out. I felt bummed out out first, but I understand the reason for getting rid of most it. It'll just be easier, and a lot less messy.

Yeah, I'm a little puzzled by them passing on Fassbender. He would make a killer Sith human. He would pull off calculating intelligent sadistic bad guy real well. I don't watch Girls and have never seen Driver in anything else so I don't have any indication of what this casting means for the villain. If they had cast Hugo or Michael I could make a guess. This could be part of the reason Abrams went with Driver. He is relatively unknown to most people and doesn't give a bit of a hint as to what or who the villain will be.
