Just received my first stack of order from B&N for a total of 29 movies. I have a second order that ship as day later still to come which will include a total of 8 movies.

Now I have a problem, where do I start? Looking at it I think I will start with The Gold Rush even if The Samurai Trilogy is calling me very loudly

I myself am deeply jealous. I got my two from the b2g1, but still waiting for my sale titles. They should show up this week. I did get Night of the Hunter, and will read that once I recover from finally finishing the North and South trilogy by John Jakes. Very different from the miniseries. Book 2 was not as enjoyable but 1 and 3 were good.

I still haven't watched The Samurai Trilogy. I'm waiting for a time when I have enough time to watch all three. And then I still have Fanny and Alexander

I was actually surprise to see the box, I wasn't expecting anything till next week if the the week after. It's usually very slow to get to me when I order from B&N

I would not be able to do that, I am not alone watching them and she would not be up to a 5 hours samurai marathon. She is sweet enough to watch them with me I will give her a break

Mix times for me. Sometimes it only takes two weeks. my friend had all of his on Monday, and he ordered after I did. Not fair! He won't watch his for years too.

Watching St. Valetine's Day Massacre on AMC. Any chance Criterion might release it?

Apparently now Criterion is doing "store exclusives" in a way... an poster at Barnes & Noble states that Quadrophenia will be released early at B&N only for a week or 2 before everywhere else. Sort of odd, but whatever.

Don't see the point for a few weeks but as long as I am still able to get them online at one point cause trying to find a Criterion release in store in Quebec is like finding Noah's ark

I wonder if that will put any pressure on the likes of DD/ImportCDs to start paying a little more attention to street dates.

A bit of warning for those who may have bought the David Lean set and have not receive it yet. Do not till the case sideways as the little cases inside slip out rather in a easy way, almost had a disaster here

There have been some rumblings but the feeling is getting it prepped for blu-ray would be quite costly.

I'm sure it'll eventually get done.

Boxes can be tricky, all right.

You should probably also steer clear of official Red Ryder carbine-action two-hundred-shot range model air rifles with compasses in the stock and these things which tell time.

You don't even want to know what can happen with those things.

What can I say, I am a cannuck we are not born with shot guns in our hands and we feel we can live without them since we have no fear of foreign tyrant kings that might come and take our freedom away

I am not sure what other release was made for that movie (speaking of the original of course, I never got the remake)
Before that, only VHS and Laserdisc P@t.

The fact that wires on the models are more visible on the 1999 DVD and especially the 2005 SE of The War of the Worlds, isn't just because of the increased resolution, but evidence of how far the colour timing of this movie has been allowed to drift since its original 1953 3-strip Technicolor. In those release prints, the wires were only fleetingly visible...and for many shots, you actually had to be looking. Since then, with each successive video release, Paramount just keeps brightening and brightening the picture (presumably to make it more palatable for modern video tastes). But they're going the wrong way with it...the original film had a very rich, saturated, primary red-blue-green pallate (like the martian tri-color eye), and was much, much darker. When correctly timed, those meticulously hand painted wires pretty much blended with the colour of the backdrop sky cyclorama in most shots.

What are you hoping for?

I think we can expect this:

At least 1 from Sony/Columbia:

-Most likely On the Waterfront (From Here to Eternity, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and In a Lonely Place are remote possibilities).

A blu-ray box set
-Most likely Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (Apu Trilogy is a remote possibility)

1-2 High Profile upgrades
-Contenders: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Wild Strawberries, Bicycle Thieves, Rashomon, Le Samourai, Jules and Jim, Hiroshima mon amour, Tokyo Story, Picnic at Hanging Rock

Lastly... 1 surprise or 1 from the long overdue group:
-I'm not even going to mention them because they've been said enough!
Yes, November particularly be very intriguing, especially considering that, for me at least, August, September and October of this year are filled with titles that I'm excited about.

I think you're right that a box set will likely be announced for November. The Trilogy of Life would be terrific, but so would The Qatsi Trilogy (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi) or The Decalogue.

I would love to see Criterion release On the Waterfront but I don't know how many Sony titles it has licensed per year (or if that's even a factor). This year, Criterion released Columbia's Anatomy of a Murder and Sony Classics' Vanya on 42nd Street.

There will likely be at least one upgrade, maybe two. This year, Criterion seems to be releasing somewhat fewer BD upgrades to its existing library. While Wild Strawberries, Bicycle Thieves and Tokyo Story would all be highly welcome, I doubt they'll be announced for this November because Criterion has already released (or scheduled to release) other films from those same three directors this year.

Rashomon would be great though, personally, I'm hoping for Ikiru. I'd also love to see Jules and Jim released. I strongly suspect one of Kurosawa's films will be upgraded, as he's a perennial favorite and none of his work has been released or announced for this year yet. Colonel Blimp has a high chance of being announced, I think.

And, yes, I think some fans from the "long overdue" groups of films will be satisfied. Specifically, I suspect either Brazil, The Ice Storm or Spartacus.

Whatever the lineup, I'm sure it will be intriguing.
