You can definitely collect something and also consume it - it's very difficult for me to view the purchase of an item just to let it sit on the shelf as being anything but a waste. Everyone is different, but I can almost guarantee that people that do that are not getting the same amount of satisfaction out of an item compared to someone who buys that item and actually uses it. And in the case of limited edition products, that's one less in the hands of someone who would enjoy it fully. If I had the kind of collectors' impulse that gave me the urge to hoard $300 anime sets I'd probably try to condition myself into a desire to collect rocks or $5 packs of baseball cards. I'm not really judging or looking down on people that do it because it'd be pretty pedantic to turn this into a contest of who is enjoying the product the most, but it's very difficult for me to understand that mentality. On the other hand, everyone who collects is absolutely in a moral position to judge scalpers. I judge scalpers all day, every day. They're bad people and I hope bad things happen to them. The act of scalping drives artificial inflation and demand - it creates an additional, unnecessary barrier of entry and it's a terrible thing for our community as hobbyists.

Any analysis on the quality of the new 4K 3.333? Is it a good upgrade to the HK 3.33 besides the resolution bump?

It was re-composited to full 2K resolution as opposed to the pathetic 720p it originally was, so there’s a nice improvement in detail. That said, the upscale is a little smeary with watercolour looking line art, so it’s not perfect (and Sony PCL could’ve avoided messing with it, much like they messed with the restoration of original Eva stuff on BD), but a nice improvement over every other version.

![]() [Show spoiler] Scalping is bad. It sucks, and I don't condone it in the least. I don't know anyone that doesn't frown upon scalping, especially considering the current situation regarding PS5's and Xbox Series X's right now and the fact that there's a large portion of consumers who aren't getting them. But that's not what's going on here in the world of Blu Ray consumers/collectors. Nobody buys 25, or 50, or 100, or whatever amount of limited edition of a particular anime. It just doesn't happen. If it did; we'd all have seen dozens upon dozens of listings for the Funimation Violet Evergarden LE (which was crazy in high demand mind you), or we'd see dozens of listings of the Evangelion Ultimate Edition pre-order listings. But if a person is trying to impose moral high ground by suggesting that they deserve it more simply because they'll use is it is bullshit. If a person wants something bad enough - they'll find a way to own it. And if I, or anyone for that matter, manage to own something that someone else wanted - it just means I wanted it more than they did. Plain and simple. And when I do get what I want, that bad boy is staying in it's packaging, and I won't feel the least bit bad about it. It's not hard at all to imagine why someone wouldn't take something out of a package. You just need perspective. Example: Car collecting. Now, what's the most common trait among car collectors that they all share? They don't drive the cars. But why? Why fork over 100k+ for a vehicle that never gets driven. What a total waste!.... right? Well, not exactly. You see, with automobile collectors - It's not about the joy rides, or the fancy seating, or driving it to work every day to make you feel special. It's about preservation, because nothing lasts forever. And to really drive my point home: (no pun intended) what's the first thing you feel when you manage to see one of these vintage cars out in the wild? For when automobile collectors finally DO take a vintage car out for a spin? Admiration and respect. It's the whole point of car shows. To see what people have chosen to preserve against the hand of time. I personally give more respect to automobile collectors who know what they have, and take care of it as opposed to the opposite. And never, not once, do you see some schmuck walk up to a collector who owns a well preserved vintage Ford GT and ask "wHy DoNt yOu DrIvE tHiS tO WoRk???" The car analogy is interesting but I feel like the point of collecting classic cars isn't to drive them, it's to admire the beauty of the craftsmanship and design, and when you see a car like that out in the wild you are still able to "consume" it by taking in that beauty, whereas by keeping blu-ray sets sealed, you aren't. You can collect expensive stamps and baseball cards and keep them in mint condition and still "consume" them by taking in the artwork. With the EVA set, you can look at the outer box but you're robbing yourself of enjoying the rest of the packaging. The other side of the car example is that people don't collect cars unless they are rich as balls. So in that sense, I can understand the mentality but I am never going to be able to relate to it, unless someone decides high school teachers should earn six figure salaries. Then yeah, at that point, spend your money on whatever you want. That's a world far away from mine.

Is the standard release coming to the UK as well?
Are the subtitles for the standard version the right ones? |

Fellow Aussie buyers, hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere so I figure I'll quickly (re)post it:
Madman's Collector's Edition and Standard Edition won't be available for preorder until December 1. The CE will retail at $169.95, while the standard is $99.95, so they work out notably cheaper than importing the UK editions. |

IMO the cover art for the UK regular edition did do a surprisingly good job, especially when you consider their careful balancing out of several design considerations:

Oh yeah just checked the Evangelion part of the Madman website. It has been updated with all the stuff from Gkids and All The Anime. Sweet. I was legit considering spending $330 on The CE from Right Stuf Anime.

Like with a car, sure you might not drive it around, but you could still sit in it, feel it and admire it. With the blu-ray just sitting sealed on a shelf you can't get anything from that. And if you're talking about preservation, ripping the disc content, backing it up and making perfect digital copies would be a better way to preserve the content. Also some people with car collections are wealthy enough to have private land where they do drive their cars around on their own private tracks. Quote:
