In the trailer we see the machine alerting the fact that a rude gesture is about to occur and it blocks it etc. However, in the film nothing happens. We just see him roll up his middle finger and so his quote doesnt appear to make sense.
To be honest, even in the trailer I didn't quite get it.
Yeah, I appreciated that scene more in the trailer. I've wondered about that scene myself. I get the impression a lot of Quill was Pratt sort of improvising, or maybe the gesture was Gunn's idea (you do get the gesture, crank up the finger?). Given that scene sort of introducing the characters' backgrounds, it certainly showcases Quill's smartass personality.

[Show spoiler]The way he is "cranking" his hand before the finger rises. That's where the joke lies. He is implying that he didn't know that "cranking" that "machine" (his hand) would produce such a disrespective result (a middle finger)... which is obviously a lie.
The trailer simply blurred that out due to advertising censorship requirements. It's actually a pretty old gag. I've seen it used quite regularly since I was about 10 years old (25 years ago).

I thought it was the other way around? Maybe it was uncensored in the first trailer I saw. Don't have access to a computer to double check right now.

Hmm, just checked that scene again, and it was definitely not censored in the movie, but the scanning software was not highlighting and censoring, as mentioned. Funny stuff though.

Yeah I understand the cranking of the finger. I done that a lot when i was younger
[Show spoiler]I just never thought of his hand as the "machine" as i was used to the part in the trailer where it actuals appears as if a machine is scanning them (for personal I.D or whatever it does) and then starts to alert the gesture (implying such a machine exists in that scene).

Taking that away in the film made it appear (to me) as if there was no machine at all in that scene because there was nothing alerting the gesture making me unappreciate quite a funny line. Now that i realise he's talking about his hand it makes so much more sense!
Actually, just after he says that you can see him "curiously" looking at his hand wondering "how it works".

Thanks guys

They did that in the trailer so that it would be suitable for more audiences then the movie itself would be.

My first Marvel studios BD, so I'm not sure what their other extras are like but I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the offerings here. They were interesting and well made and some of the bits like the outtake of the dance off were brilliant but all the content amounts to about forty five minutes. I'm just used to getting a little more.

I thought it was completely obvious he was referring to his pretend finger-crank as the "machine". It had nothing to do with the scanner/censoring (He wouldn't have seen that anyway). Did people really have a hard time understanding that?!? Everyone in every audience I watched it with got the joke just fine.

yes, the censoring was just cleaning it up for green-band trailers. It had nothing to do with the "machine".

Never watched a home release with shifting aspect ratios before, it's pretty cool but why can't the film just fill my TV the whole time?

Because that's not what it was meant to do. Certain scenes are meant to fill the screen, others aren't. It's an artistic decision.

Never understood the point of black bars, why take away a massive chunk of the screen? I know you get used to it but whenever the film filled the screen I was left wondering why it wasn't always doing that.

Well, it depends on the screen too. On a 2:35 Constant Image Height screen, it'll fill it up. Of course, that depends on whether you have a projector or not.

Most theaters have CIH screens though, so it does fill up the whole screen.

Talking about the home release, I guess my "big purchase" of next year might be a projector then. I'd need one with a really short range throw and then someone who can set it up, haha.

Not all movies are 1.78:1 some are 2.35:1 so the only way they can fill the screen with these movies they would have to alter the OAR and lose parts of the film.

The basic way to look at this is: 2.35 offers more horizontal information, whereas 1.85/1.78 offers more information vertically.

Usually to do with composition, how they're shot for a big screen. A lot of old VHS films took what was originally widescreen and made them fit the entire screen. It usually revealed boom mics and shadows left by crew on shot. I think Guardians only used it for special effects shots.

You are WAY over-thinking the joke.

Also, how the heck are you guys watching this film at home, it isn't even out yet?

Did I miss something? I've been dying for this one to come out.

It came out like a week ago in the UK? I got mine on release day but put it off as I was watching my Friday the 13th collection. Maybe they released it early in the UK because most of it was shot in the UK?
