I'd recommend:
Harakiri
High and Low
The Night of the Hunter
Paths of Glory
The Wages of Fear

Personal Top Five Blu-rays:
1. La Jetée/Sans Soleil
2. Yi Yi
3. Late Spring
4. Chungking Express

I asked a question earlier on some top 5 films from Criterion that I need to pick up, considering I've just started getting into films like this (at age 26). Multiple people went out of their way to answer that for me and even give plot breakdowns and recommendations based on my collection and their personal opinions. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone. This site is fantastic and most people on here have a great working knowledge of this hobby and it's refreshing to see people go out of their way to help. Thanks again, guys! You rock!

Everybody has their own top lists and I won't bore you with mine.

Just skimming your collection... I think Revanche would be right up your alley. Excellent film.

I'll second Revanche as an excellent pick. Great movie, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

I don't think this is so sure a bet. The film hasn't had a home video release in any form since the VHS/laserdisc days, and even then never one in Region 1. Francis Ford Coppola owns the rights and won't release the film for some convoluted reason - I think it has something to do with his father's score but I'm not too up on those machinations.

What theaters is it touring? As far as I know it was prominently stated during its run at the Silent Film Festival earlier this year that no further exhibitions were planned.

I am wondering if Criterion will have a 50% sale next month. They had one last September.

I thought I read something about more showings of the film. I'm hoping Coppola is having a change of heart. Since Blu ray is the last physical media we will have probably, it would be nice to have it available. Just makes sense this would be the time and the right format for it. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Just be warned. If you are new to arthouse type films there are pro's and con's. While you may very well find a movie that becomes your favorite and possibly even make you look at the world in a different light you could also find a real stinker or snoozefest depending on your personal likes/dislikes.

I would personally recommend starting off in relatively safe areas and working your way up. For instance if you liked Seven Samurai I'd definitely recommend Yojimbo.

I find that movie to be one of the very best for introducing people to foreign language films. Its so western in its execution its easy for people to get into it and really is a almost perfect movie. Highly enjoyable.

Other safe bets.
Anatomy of a Murder
Sweet Smell of Success
Diabolique
The 39 Steps
The Wages of Fear
High and Low

Personal recommendations
The Three Colors Trilogy
Harakiri
The Phantom Carriage
The Music Room
Pale Flower
The Double Life of Veronique
Army of Shadows
Branded to Kill

As lovely as the thought is, it's still unlikely. It's more likely that there will be a Gance eclipse set with his films that aren't La roué, J'Accuse and Napoleon.

However, Criterion have publicly expressed their wish to release Napoleon and it's possible that they have managed to arrange something. Here's hoping!

Any thoughts on Rosetta or La Promesse? I've been interested in these since they were announced but haven't heard anything on here about them. I added Rosetta to my wishlist. Might just wait for the next sale to pick it up.

La Promesse is a movie really worth seeing. a very intimate movie. Also the subject matter (illegal migrants) is really a hot topic at the moment and it gives it a powerful touching story.

For what it's worth, I just ordered The Royal Tenebaums because I love the movie, not just because it's a criterion.

For what it's worth, I bought a Coke today, not because it's a Coke but because I was thirsty

What types of films do you enjoy watching the most? How much did you enjoy the three you mentioned above? Are you interested only in films from the 1950s and earlier or would you consider some more recent films too?

Five terrific titles I would recommend, somewhat arbitrarily, that could be considered "must-sees" (though whether any film fits into that category is always subjective) include:

Beauty and the Beast
The Human Condition
(a trilogy on DVD)
M
The Red Shoes
The 400 Blows
