When the comics were first done in the '60s, the foursome's powers were used as a metaphor, to illustrate the differences in how they perceived themselves. Reed was always reaching for something bigger, constantly ambitious to the point of obsession...hence his ability to stretch. Sue's main power was a play on being unappreciated or ignored, but Stan Lee gave her force-fields to serve as a defense. Ben's transformation was a nod to the phrase "rock-solid reliable", while people like Johnny are often called "hotshots".

To come up with a more specific explanation of their powers would almost be an insult toward the audience, because the original metaphor would be reduced to techno-babble. The best they could do within reason would be Reed explaining that cosmic rays are inherently unpredictable, responding differently to each person's DNA.

I hope I like it, and if I don't I hope at least a few people do. Echo chambers are boring.

so you admit that the entire concept is completely bananas?

because none of what you said can be conceived by a rational person as translating well into a feature film.

So what kind of excuses are we going to hear from the cast and crew?

Does it seem likely that the cast and Trank were forced to use a producer's approved screenplay that no one liked? Forced as in "if you try to disagree or walk out, you will be legally in trouble or have careers in jeapardy?"

if we hear that I would believe it 100%. It seems HIGHLY probable.

No, I think its a good idea, much like Lee's later use of the word "mutant" to explain the X-Men. You don't need every tiny detail covered in-depth, to provide a compelling story.

I respectfully disagree; its surely a challenge, but not impossible.

Thanks for the insult. The concept and characters can translate well into film, it just requires someone who respects the material.

and maybe that's why we heard rumors of Trank being wild or turning to drugs because he knew all the problems of production would fall onto him and hurt his career the most. Not sure how the Star Wars rejection fits in too.

Sigh.

It sounds a lot worse than I feared... If all of that is true, Fox actively damaged the franchise and even if Marvel gets it back, we might not get another FF movie for years...

it's Batman and Robin level of bad....just without the cheesy humor that made B&R at least partially bearable

Based on what Stuckmann said, it really sounds like it was a problem with the director.

The trailers look good. Fox should have just hired another director and script writer to re-shoot half the movie (like what happened with WWZ). At least they could have salvaged it and had the possibility of a sequel. This just seems like damage control and trying to recoup losses.

The franchise is officially stained. In the hypothetical sense that Marvel does get the property back, it's going to be like two kids arguing over a toy.

Marvel: "Hey, that's mine! Give it back"
FOX: "Ok, here you go"
Marvel: Takes toy and puts it in a safe place
FOX: "Well aren't you going to play with it"?
Marvel: "No, I just don't want you to mess it up"

This may actually go down as the worst comic book movie ever made.

Remember when people said, "Trank's FF4 can at least be no where as bad as Story's FF4s?" Funny stuff.
