On film, Predator isn't super grainy for the most part. I don't know if the print I saw was accurate with respect to the filmmaker's intentions, but much of it was printed very dark and had lots of what folks here would call "black crush". I think they pushed up the shadow detail too much in the video transfer and brought out more grain than would've been seen originally (then there's MPEG2 noise muddling things up).

Gotta wonder what the BD would have looked like if they left the DNR dial alone and just gave it a better encode than the MPEG2 disc. I wonder if asking for a third version is pushing it....

Well, many, many titles were released several times on DVD, so who knows?

It is a bit sad that it would take three versions to finally get it right, though.

Yes, it is. I'm pretty happy with the old disc I have, but I sometimes think about it when I watch it. "What if?" It shouldn't be necessary to have to think about it and I try not to, but it slips in there from time to time.

I read the bad reviews for this well before I ever bought it however on a black Friday I found it for 5 dollars couldn't help it but when I finally watched it a few weeks ago I was amazed how horrible the transfer was. I bought this on VHS, laserdisc x2, DVD x2, now bluray. I would buy it one last time if they remastered properly.

The original 2008 MPEG-2 release looks much better than the 2010 DNR disaster if that helps you.

If we ever get a new remastering of Predator ever again on Blu-Ray it should take note of the fantastic work done supervised by Cameron and created by Lowly on Aliens and more recently the new 2012 UK release of The Terminator. Both are older films then Predator that were shot with similar low quality film stocks. They look outstanding. The 2010 Ultimate Hunter Edition is a insult in every sense of the world, so for now the 2008 Blu-Ray is the best we have, but it goes to show that there is room for improvement!

so i just bought the 2008 version of Predator for $4.99.

did i buy the best version in terms of picture quality? i was reading the reviews and it seems that the Ultimate Edition tarnished the picture? can somebody explain?

yup, that's the best so far. they DNR'd the SH!T out of this movie for the ultimate hunter ediiton.

thank you! i was hesitant about which version to pick up today. i came on here, read the reviews and just went with the 2008 version.
