First Donald Sutherland, now Shelley Duvall. Looks like another memorial movie marathon is in order this weekend.

I don't know if this is a popular opinion or a hot take, but she carries this movie. RIP.

I think she carries it because she was genuinely terrified the entire time she was on set. She was mentally ill then even though it wasn't as prominent as it was recently, plus Kubrick pushed everyone to the limit, plus he pushed her significantly harder than he pushed everyone else. Her reactions were genuine fear on the set. That might've been kosher for Kubrick, but it was honestly pretty f*cked up. Nowadays a director would likely never work again if they put one of their stars through that.

But, she was not "genuinely terrified" the entire time she was on set. And where do you get this "pushed her significantly harder than he pushed everyone else" from? SK was tough, and he had to be tough with Shelley at times becuase guess what? She was a an actor and they are difficult people. but he was not tougher on her than anyone else.

She has stated many times that her experience on the movie was fantastic, and people who are terrified are not generally looking back with fondness of experiences like that.

She was an incredible actor! Her role in Shining is stunning!
But her role in Altman's 3 Women is even better imo.

In the Michael Palin diaries there’s a section during his time filming with Duvall on Time Bandits (she was able to do it as there was a six month hiatus on filming for The Shining as Nicholson jiggered his back) and she is regailing Palin with her stories of her experience with Nicholson & Kubrick and how she’d love to show them both an episode of Palin’s Ripping Yarns that she thought they’d both love.

Aye, terrified on set by a monster.

I think a lot of it also comes from the Making the Shining doc that Vivian Kubrick made. You see him getting pretty annoyed with Shelley multiple times, but tbh Kubrick was just that kind of a director.

She certainly wasn't well in her later years, but that was not because of The Shining.

And her "actually" being terrified on set? Nonsense.

I'm a HUGE Kubrick fan, but constantly beating Duvall with jumper cables just to get a better performance for a motion picture is crossing the line, imho.

Both Robert Altman alums as well... let's make sure Elliott Gould, Keith Carradine and Geraldine Chaplin are well taken care of until the "celebs die in threes" period is over.

Jack Nicholson said as much. I wish I could find the source I read, but Jack had nothing but praise for her after the shoot, especially 127 takes on the Colorado Lounge steps.
