Then I thought about it and it made sense, but not in the way Triangle or the Fountain make sense. Those films have things that are definitive, based on scenes and details. Marienbad has nothing definitive and I didn't deconstruct it to arrive at the explanation--it's simply how the story appealed the most to me. Considering I came up with a theory, I really need to see it again to see if it holds water. My inkling is that some of it will and some of it won't, since it's universally considered to have no true answer. Let me know if you re-watch it.
I have a similar take on it.
[Show spoiler]Although the end provides the most straight forward clues for me as well, there are many things to suggest this interpretation throughout the film (murder/ghost story). Every time her "husband" played the man (Albertazzi) at Nim, it was part of her dream, serving as a metaphor for her mental struggle over who should prevail over her. There are also several instances in which the man seems invisible to the husband (such as when she promises to meet him for dinner). However, sometimes Albertazzi's defeat would come in real life though, such as when he was trying to describe the painting. The husband describes the painting where the spirit cannot (explains the origins of the statues), and unknowingly defeat's the spirits efforts to take the woman's love from her husband. The ending implies a ghost story to me not only because the woman looks up at the staircase at the spot where her husband ends up, but the manner in which the ghost trails her when she leaves her husband. I used to think this was because he represented her conscience, trailing her to give her more back and forth struggles... that because her husband "could never lose," she must have began to see right through him at the staircase and thus why he trailed her. But after my second viewing yesterday (first time on blu), I think it resembled her love leaving her husband for the spirit, liberating the spirit from the confines of the hotel. Outstanding PQ by the way!

I read somewhere that Resnais once said something along the lines of: "the more you try to explain it, the less sense you will make out of it."

That sequence is part of Resnais' hypnotic style of repetition. He uses it most effectively in Hiroshima mon amour imo. I think it is a unique and effective way to entrance the viewer.

Entranced I was.

I have been reading all these spoilers and have decided to watch it again. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood the first time.

FIRST TIME VIEWING

someone once told me, "yeah, Deep Impact is a lot like Armageddon, it's weird". that person is an idiot. Deep Impact - main story wise - is EXACTLY like Armageddon! i was baffled and literally laughed in shock at how the story is the same:
[Show spoiler]asteroid headed towards Earth, solution is to send a team to the giant rock and blow it up from inside so it breaks apart and misses Earth
but here's the main difference:

Deep Impact = great film
Armageddon = popcorn flick

now, i love Armageddon, but Deep Impact, major plot idea aside, is a different animal completely. Deep Impact is smarter, more family oriented, and overall much more moving than Armageddon ever could be. i can't quite place why this is, but where Michael Bay obsessed with explosions, humor and a rag tag group of oil dwellers, Deep Impact shifts its focus to a more natural, human element. now both films are great for entirely different reasons, so i'm not knocking Armageddon but here we meet more characters, we may not see them as much, but i felt i connected more with them. hell, the "goodbye" scenes almost had me tear up, and i was like, "what the hell? i've seen this character for 40 minutes, why do i care so much?" - because it's a good film. few films makes me care as much as i did here, and i really never felt like i knew these people. amazing how that works.

the science aspect of the film - if there are any "oh come on that could never happen!" (i'm sure there are a few) - didn't bother me at all. i came to watch a fun, science fiction / end of the world disaster flick. and Deep Impact exceeds GREATLY. a varied and very well known cast, only one or two cheesy bad acting performances, a solid / smart script, and freaking Morgan Freeman as the President! what's not to love?!

4.5/5
Couldnt of said it any better!! Deep impact is a better film.

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
The Princess Bride.
This was my first time ever seeing this movie. I have heard so many good things about this movie, i was finally able to sit down and watch it with the girlfriend. It was a pretty awesome and fun movie. For some reason it reminded me a little bit of Monty Python. The person that stole the show for me was Mandy Patinkin "Inigo Montoya", he was my favorite character, I wish he was in the entire movie. It was crazy seeing how incriedibly huge Andre the Giant is compared to everyone else. I would rate this movie inbetween a 3.5 and 4, and I'm feeling generous so i will round up to 4.

The Princess Bride 4/5

In God's Hands - 4/5

This is a really cool surf movie. I used to watch this with my brother and my friends when were a lot younger and we loved it. Now I realize that there's a decent amount of bad acting, but for the most part the actors are fine. The story is really cool and there are LOTS of awesome waves, scenery and music. I really enjoyed this one again, maybe it'll see blu someday

Its fantastic. It focuses only on big wave surfing and starts at the birth of surfing in Hawaii and travels forward in time. It also lays out extremely well, in chronological order, the advancements made to boards and the discoveries of (formerly) unknow and secret spots like "Jaws" and "Mavericks" and Teahupoo. It also dissects the whys and hows of the birth of "Tow-in" surfing. Because it focuses on Big Wave Surfing, its running time is mostly filled with intense footage.

Dude, the music and audio at Mavericks are sick. You feel the power and danger of Mother Natures killing machine.

Teahupoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lip is as thick as the barrel. Extreme tonnage. A sucking vortrex of death. Its a flawless work of art by Mother Nature.

Get it wrong, and you are pretty much done.

Teahupoo in 3D.

A good 4 feet of water below you and jagged coral below that. Failure to respect her WILL result in extreme punishment.

Ok you just got me stoked on seeing this! I just bumped it to the top of my queue and I'll be getting it next week. EDIT: I'm adding Big Wednesday too, haven't seen that since I was a kid

One of my buddies met Laird in Hawaii once and got to catch a couple waves with him

Crank the audio when you get to Mavericks. The music combined with the visuals (especially if you have ever surfed) makes the hair in my neck stand up and I get chills. Literally, chills. The heart starts goin a little quicker.

I remember how fun it was getting it right, but I also have some strong memories of getting it really wrong in a huge winter swell in Oceanside CA. Mother nature is strong as hell and she can hold you under forever if it suits her fancy. Like being in a car wreck......... with a freight train.

That sounds killer! Surfing has always been a dream of mine, but I've never done it. I'm gonna travel south later this year and will finally give it a shot. I've done just about everything else in the water (scuba diving, kayaking, white water rafting, jet skiing, wakeboarding) just never had a chance to go surfing. I edited my last post, I just added Big Wednesday to my queue as well
