Jumpman,

You are a huge fan of Nolan like me. Do you think that if he even remaster TDK and Begins that it would look significantly better than what they do now on BD? Based off of the things you notice about Nolan's film and him not changing the look I get the feeling that a remaster might not look that significantly different than it does right now. What are your opinions on this? I don't know if you or anyone else has had discussions on this in the past and I just missed but I just wanted to see what you thought about this.

I doubt WB will release a remstar, even for a re-release.

I think the first two movies could look better.

TDK's 35mm shots look very over-processed with DNR and EE. This completely destroys any potential film-like, natural look. TDKR, on the other hand, doesn't have any of this mess and its 35mm shots look like film.

Batman Begins on the other hand is using a low bit rate VC1 encode which also has some DNR baked into it, but not nearly as objectionable as TDK.

It's true these would still look a bit soft and murky at times. But that's fine; that's how they were shot and the BD should replicate that film source as much as possible without the processing artifacts.

Both of these movies would look noticeably better with a true remaster, but I doubt we'll ever see it.

Mine was set to -15, and yes, it was loud, but no denying the fact I was fully immersed in the film. The loudest film (per receiver settings) to date was Jaws at -7, yet the sound was not that loud for most of the film until the action scenes....

Yeah I see what you are saying. They could use the upgrade but i just don't know how much of a difference there would be without really alternating the look and feel. Then you'll get people complaining they over did it. i don't know we'll see.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the top ten films of the year, according to AFI.

I agree, and the other films on the list are great too, though I'd rather see a few that aren't there than some that are.

Alternating the look and feel is exactly what they did with the Blu-Rays. The colour timing is noticeably different than the theatrical releases (confirmed on TDK by industry insiders, though BB is up in the air) and has a dose of DNR (removes detail) and Edge Enhancement (causes ringing/ haloing among other things on TDK) applied to them. If they remastered it, it could only be closer to the 'look and feel' of what Nolan and Pfister intended.

Oh, Begins and Knight can look better. I don't know how much but Knight's 35mm elements could definitely do without the EE and the artificial sharpening.

With Begins, because it was mastered with HD DVD in mind, it'll just look sharper, more detailed but the softness will still be there because of how Nolan likes for his films to look.

Look, until he does a DI, this inherent softness in his films will be there, if he continues to shoot with the older anamorphic lenses.

Unless, he goes completely IMAX.

Odd. I was watching the movie on Friday & about an hour in my receiver flipped out & shut off the sound. At one point the receiver started clicking & running through different sound settings settings which killed sound output. I shut it all down & restarted but still no sound. Everything looked right on the receiver.

I spent a couple of hours on Saturday trying to find out what the issue was but came up blank. I did some Googling & some recommended that compressed air be blown into the headphone jack since it seems that dust could trigger the system into thinking headphones were plugged in. I blew a bunch of air in there & after a bit I was back in business. I watched the rest of the movie Saturday night without issue. My receiver is a Denon AVR-1910.

I still don't know what the issue was but I'm definitely glad the sound is back!

Now that you guys have seen all the Batman films, who do you think is the best Batman? (George Clooney and Val Kilmer doesn't count).

Christian Bale, by ****ing miles. Nothing against the others but Bale's had way more to work with as Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Not that I would vote for them, but why don't Clooney and Kilmer count?

My vote: Bale

Did you check your wiring connections? If you have a stray strand of wire touching something it'll trip the protect mode.

Well the Clooney and Kilmer versions of Batman were far too silly and didn't have that darker tone to it compared to Keaton's and Bale's take on it.

I agree, Christian Bale as Batman was amazing. You totally felt his emotion and pain especially towards
[Show spoiler]the end of TDKR when he takes the bomb out to sea.

I didn't check that. I'll pull out the receiver this weekend & check all of the connections. Definitely don't want that to happen again. Thanks!

I give credit to Lewis Wilson for bringing the character to life, and of course for being the first Batman.
