Do you know anyone who's been on a campus when the tragedy happens on said campus?

It affects a lot of people, whether or not you knew the people, whether or not you were close to them.

Just how many football players have to be thinking about it for it to affect the team? Sure not every player on the team was affected, but it doesn't have to affect all of them.

If you think it's a lame excuse we are going to flat agree to disagree, because I was in Iowa City when a player died on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and all sports play suffered for Iowa for a week or so while people got over it, even though most of the sports had nothing whatsoever to do with the player.

Up until now, only 4 teams have at least 10 wins vs other FBS teams:

LSU
Stanford
USC
Virginia Tech <--- Added later

That's it. After tonight, you can add Oregon to that list.

TLK

EDIT: You can add Virginia Tech to that list right now.

I do personally know some of the people effected/involved in the Ereck Plancher death at UCF. He was the UCF player who collapsed and died during a conditioning drill. Coach O'Leary and the school were found liable for his death and the school had to pay his family $10 mill. The team did have an awful 4-8 record the next season, though it seems that was more due to 2008 being a rebuilding year for the football program and the death happened many months before the season started.

It really was just bad luck that OK St. football played that same day as the tragedy. I think it was on a Thursday too, which was odd since not many games happen on that day of the week. They still should have beaten Iowa St. easily. They were something like 25 point favorites. It's not like they were playing some top-tier team.

TLK, what is the buzz around USC as to whether or not Barkley comes back for his senior year. If he declares for the NFL draft, he's looking at a top 5 pick. Of course, next year he would probably be looking at the #1 overall pick.

I heard he's already going ahead with the paperwork to enter the draft. Everything I've read and heard indicates he's about 99% likely to enter the draft.

Quote:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt has rewarded coach James Franklin with a contract extension after his first season with the Commodores.

Franklin led the Commodores (6-6, 2-6 SEC) to become bowl eligible for just the fifth time in school history.

In addition to announcing the extension on Friday, Vanderbilt vice chancellor David Williams said the university is planning to upgrade Vanderbilt Stadium and build an indoor practice complex for use by all Commodores athletic programs.

Williams would not offer specifics about Franklin's new deal, but said he would be the Commodores coach for many years to come.

The vice chancellor says university administrators recognize they needed to "up their commitment" to football.

Over the next two seasons, the university will install a new scoreboard, new turf and new lighting while considering further upgrades.
Although Franklin comes across as kind of a jackass, he did an excellent job this year. I wonder if Maryland regrets letting him go and hiring Edsall?

lol well if you can make exceptions anyone can. They aren't the only team that's had to face tragedy, and if thats all it take I guess the NC should be Arkansas vs. Ok St.

lol really. Here at MD the FB players barley hang with the Mens team let alone the women's team.

Kinda sad 6-6 is considered really good, but at Vanderbilt it is. That school sucks so bad at football they went 11-35 in Jay Cutler's four years and he was probably the best QB in school history.

Yeah I don't buy that excuse for Oklahoma State. They blew the Iowa State game, no other way to put it.

He keeps telling everyone in interviews that it's 50/50. I'm not worried either way!

For me, 2011 Trojan football reminds me of 2002 Trojan football. Carson Palmer won the Heisman Trophy in 2002, and USC had to start a redshirt sophomore for the 2003 season who had never taken a snap from center as a collegian before. That redshirt sophomore was Matt Leinart.

So, if Barkley leaves, I'll wish him the best, and I'm 100% confident that whoever starts in 2012 (Jesse Scroggins, Cody Kessler, or Max Wittek) will do just fine.

As for Franklin I'm not sold on him either. 6-6 at Vandy is like 9, or 10 wins here in my op. So who knows. I just never trusted Fridges judgement either, so I'd have still passed on him if it was my call.

Now with Leach gone I'd want Art Briles, people often forget he was the backbone that made Houston relevant and got them their players, and wins. And he's now whipped Baylor into shape real quick (think he started in 08 or 09), that guys a beast.

I wouldn't want Scroggins going in (was never a fan of his following recruiting when he came out), but I do think Kessler could be sick, especially with his deceptive speed kind of like tebow and mccoy.

I almsot wish USC had stuck Barkley on the bench because now would have been the time to prep for the future, I know they wanted him to come back and all, but I'd have just cut my losses, and built up Kessler or Wittek.

I can barely remember a time when USC actually had a bad QB. I'm sure they'd be fine without Barkley. They always bring in 5-star QB after 5-star QB. Hell, even their backups like Matt Cassel have turned out to be solid NFL starters. Even without Barkley they're probably a pre-season top-10 team for 2012.

Absolutely, I know Cassel didn't start in his Senior year at USC, but did he even take a snap?

This is his entire USC career.

19-33 passing
192 yards
1 TD 1 Int

He spent his entire four year USC career backing up Leinart and Palmer. Really incredible given he's about 100 times better than Leinart as a pro. Cassel also pitched one season for USC's baseball team and was actually drafted by the Oakland A's.

The little gutties played Highlighter U. a lot tougher than I thought they would, losing by only 18 points.

Oregon was favored by about 31 points. If I had bet on that game I probably would have taken the over. Crazy that UCLA turned the ball over 4 times and managed to lose by just 18.

Too bad USC couldn't get a re-match with Oregon in the Pac-12 title game. I really think USC is the best team in the Pac-12 right now, not Oregon.

It was nice to see UCLA fight hard for their coach, unfortunately the talent gap was just way too big. I always liked Neuheisel, hopefully he can find success again as a head coach. He did good jobs at Colorado and Washington, but I don't know what happened to him at UCLA.

Southern Miss is hanging tough against undefeated Houston in the CUSA title game. Southern Miss up 21-14 near halftime.
