I have to respect that, while also being a little horrified because I still love the black and red harlequin-Harley.

It is a little concerning, though. If they go with post-reboot DC, when they screwed up a bunch of wonderful storylines in multiple comics, then this film could start with Joker forcing her to kill Bud and Lou, causing her to break up with him and then start dating Poison Ivy instead.

I'm really hoping they don't do this, as I'm old school when it comes to Harley and Joker and the babies, all of them for that matter. I don't care a bit about the political ramifications of any particular story, but I do care about screwing with Harley and Joker.

I don't even consider those new comics to be real. They are mean-spirited fan-fiction by people who are just jealous at how amazing Batman Animated was and wish they could figure out how to draw on black paper and make it look half as cool.

They are. That's the whole point. They are both despicable human beings, horrific in every way, the perfect combination of crazy and delusional, and awesome foils for Batman.

I had a friend who also watched Batman, not a criminologist, and he commented on how Joker was beating her up and it made him "a little uncomfortable". I, once a criminologist, had to explain to him that enjoying violence is a specific form of mental illness that I've seen many times in criminally insane patients and just run-of-the-mill violent criminals. I don't mean BDSM/50-Shades violence. I mean real violence, like being in love with someone who stabs you periodically, the kind of violence that leads normal people to file for divorce and testify that their soon-to-be ex-whatchawhosit should get the chair.

Harley and Joker are characters, not archetypes, and when writers forget that, they start trying to fix them, to make them like all of us out here in the real world, ruining the characters. The whole point of Harley and Joker is to exist as incredible and strange foils for Batman. If they fixed Harley, like they tried in the comics, and in this film she is suddenly not crazy because she has embraced being gay, not only is that offensive to the entire LGBT community, a group of people who are no different from anyone else except for sexual orientation, but it negates Harley entirely as a character. She doesn't need to exist after being fixed and Batman becomes an abuser of women if he dares throw her in Arkham again.

DC has pushed Harley into a major character to monetize her. She teamed up with Batgirl in Heroes in Crisis. Within the DCEU they have implied she murdered Robin.
