Definitely read the book immediately: it's killer stuff, pardon the slight pun. Scorsese has stated that the movie concentrates on a different angle than the author has, even if the basic story remains the same. Also, it should be no surprise what happens to native Americans when the white man moves in. It is a beautifully written book, and deserves to be read, The movie will be a far different animal imho, and absolutely worth seeing as well. Marty & co. never let us down. Also, after reading it, I had a whole new view of Oklahoma.

Oh, I am excited for each and every Scorsese film. I am more stoked for a new Scorsese every few years than I am for virtually anyone else. I am super stoked for this one, too.

Interesting to see Dicaprio positioned as the center of the film. I know he's the biggest star obviously so he's going to be all over the promotion. But I figured the Ted White character (played by Jesse Plemons) was going to be the actual lead. He's the real life FBI agent who investigated the case while it was happening.
I read the book that the movie is based on a couple of years ago and I can't recommend it enough. It really is a tragic and screwed up story. A movie murder mystery that was actually real life. Oil is found underneath the Osage Indian land. The Osage Indians are all rich now, right? Nope. The US Government doesn't just the Indians have the money. The Government doesn't consider the Indians smart enough to handle their own funds. So they are all given managers, almost like an accountant, who controls the spending. The Osage people have to go through these managers in order to have access to their own money! Of course, these "managers" (I can't remember the title they had in real life) are usually rich, white businessman from that area. What ends up happening is white men wind up controlling the money and then the Indian people, who are supposedly millionaires, are living in poverty. You also have white men (represented by [Show spoiler] characters) who marry female Indians and since they are male, they get automatic control of the money (and inheritance if the women die). Of course, there are a lot of Osage Indian's who aren't okay with this financial arrangement and try and lobby for control of their own money. That's when Osage Indians start turning up dead and the story of the book begins. It's a really horrible story and one of the most horrific injustices that you'll never see talked about in history classes or on TV shows. |

This movie sounds a lot more interesting than I thought it was when I first heard of it. I don't want to read too much about the story it is based on before I see it, though.
I recently watched my first Scorsese movie (The Wolf of Wall Street) and loved it so I'm definitely seeing this. |

If we want to live in a better world history is important, so that we don't repeat the same mistakes. By trying to hide the truth we're bound to live in hell forever. That's everywhere in our world. So we need more films like that, to light awareness. Scorsese himself has learned a great deal; we are in its footsteps, we have to. |

^This. One of the most overrated actors ever.
Hollywood loves those "white man bad" stories, so I'm sure it will. |

Thoroughly agree, and it's a shame Scorsese obviously sees something in him that I don't see coming across on screen. I'll grant that he was very good in the Wolf of Wall Street (maybe because playing a lecherous millionaire playboy wasn't too big a stretch for him), but he was the weakest link in The Departed, not remotely believable as Howard Hughes in The Aviator, and was in way out of his depth with Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. I'm quite prepared for him to be the weak link in this movie too. When Plemons was initially announced as the main character I was excited to see Scorsese working with new actors, as he did in Silence. Then they pivoted round to DiCaprio, which they've justified their reasons for, but it's hard not to be disappointed that Scorsese is making another DiCaprio movie.
I can see why directors have repeat collaborators - the same as you would want to work with people you see as reliable in any industry - but I think it's usually to the detriment of their creativity. I like going to the movies to be surprised. I remember Scorsese saying he had considered De Niro for the role of Queenan in The Departed, a role that Martin Sheen played perfectly and in a way that I suspect De Niro couldn't have. De Niro is a great actor, in a totally different league to DiCaprio, but we'd have missed a unique and surprising performance from Sheen all because Marty likes working with the same people. |

Damn, Marty's still got it. Can't think of too many directors in their 80s putting out this level of filmmaking. Like, Ridley and Clint are up there for sure but in terms of actual movies, Scorsese is on a whole different level.

As far as the book and film, the film is really its own animal. Based on everything stated so far, Scorsese & Co. decided to reduce half of the book to an afterthought (White, his family history and his role in expanding the awareness and reach of the FBI). Welcome to Hollywood. And that doesn't mean this film is not a good film, it just means if you were hoping for the story as written, it's not. Quote:
The truth is far less polarizing. It's who we are, all of us, and how humans have evolved to this point in history, regardless of race, ethnicity, country of origin, religion or any other label you choose to apply. It's how history lets us know we're equal. |
