Dare I ask why this wasn't a SpiderVerse-style homage flick to the classic (well, 90s) cartoon version?

Until a friend linked me the RedLetterMedia video about this, I had heard nothing about this film. RLM joked that Sony paid them $150 to make that video, but those guys did a better job at PR than Sony's actual PR folks.

I'm expecting this to be on the same level of the Venom films and Morbius which is mediocre. I'll still see it though because there really isn't much else out.

Well, I thought Venom 1 was great, but Venom 2 was a disappointment because it was so derivative. Morbius, well....

The thing of it is, this all started because we saw one film in 2013 that she wanted to see. She surprisingly hated it. The following year, we saw another film and were slightly looking forward to it. We ended up really hating that one and from then on, it’s been nothing but a running gag with us and deliberate choices.

As far as being a female centric comic book movie, I'm expecting this to be better than The Marvels. A movie that also had a late review embargo close to the release date. The theory/excuse for The Marvels late embargo release was because the studio didn't want to spoil a game changer cameo.
