This will be a stupid question but I have to ask . Why all the cartoon artwork like they did on the Godzilla set , Are they not allowed to use original pictures ? Seems to be the thing , Godzilla and even the Bruce Lee set , Why cartoon/animated covers ? Some like them I don't really do .

I'm not crazy about it and please don't say newly commissioned as an answer , All that means to me is they can't use/get real pictures .

Otherwise it's not going to stop me from buying it but another giant set to put in the closet .

Probably consistency. Movie posters, even in the same franchise, can vary greatly. For a franchise spanning decades you're looking at changing tastes and cultures.

Well, that's definitely not the reason Criterion used commissioned posters for their Godzilla set.

Japan

I would definitely prefer original Japanese poster art, to the comic book stuff in this set, or the "pop art" in the Criterion Godzilla set. At least for the individual movies. For the big box, they should commission someone who can do something epic, rather than cartoonish. For example, Mill Creek / Marvel got Alex Ross to do an Ultraman piece for a new BD and comic book:

And when it comes to Godzilla, no one outside of Japan compares to Bob Eggleton:

Plus, there's so much cool Japanese stuff outside of theatrical posters. Japanese books and products have some glorious kaiju art:

The SF Gamera DVDs included some of the Japanese "cut-away" anatomical art. For some reason, Arrow is having another artist do something similar for their set, instead of using the originals. I really do like their kaiju attack map, though. Would love to have one for Godzilla as well.

Add me to those who don't care about new art, one of the reason Criterion annoys me. I love original posters and i'm always bummed when they don't use them for home video releases.

Both his site and his art blog have not been updated in years. I've seen him at G-fest, I assume he has gone to other cons as well, and his prices are high, even for prints. On one hand, they're just prints on the other it IS Bob Eggleton. Just letting you know you'll be dropping more than for a print from 90% of other Godzilla/kaiju artist.

Add me to the list as well. A big reason I love these old movies is because I love the history behind them. and the movie posters and other production art are a very big part of Kaiju history and are very iconic to the genre.

Yep, it's funny too that it's the cheaper company like Mill Creek who, because they don't want to put the extra money on new art, put the posters as their cover. Their Mothra steelbook art is better than any Kaiju movies released by Criterion or Arrow.

Imagine if Criterion released Jaws! They'd hire a random artist so they could replace what is, imo, the greatest poster of all time!
At least with Arrow and Shout! they often give you a reversible cover. Kino too.

A lot of love went to their Mothra steelbook straight down to the slipcase.

Criterion's covers have been awful for quite a few releases. Some of the worst for me, Scanners & The Brood (totally ruins a pivotal moment). There are more, just thinking off the top of my head.

However, while not original poster art, I wasn't that disappointed with the covers for; I Wanna Hold Your Hand, The Blob (1958), Godzilla (1954) and Fiend Without a Face (where's the blu-ray??).

At least Shout/Scream! offer the original poster art as reversible options, when they commission new art.

Criterion's Jaws: A simple drawing of a buoy, done in like four colors, with a streak of red in the water.

Scream! Factory's Jaws: The lunging shark from the "bigger boat" scene in the middle. A long shot of the shark crunching down on the boat, and Quint, along the bottom. Big floating heads of Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw above the middle shark. Smaller floating heads of Ellen Brody, Mrs. Kintner, the mayor, and some randos up and down the sides. Title at the top, with a shooting star above it.

Correct, I stand corrected. I had no intention on triple dipping that title, so I thought criterion released it.

One small change. It'd be smudgy and overly shadowy for some reason.

If companies like Criterion and Arrow would team up with Mondo for original cover art then they would look spectacular. Just image search some of the Jaws and Godzilla posters from Mondo.
