The BDP-80 is based on the BDP-83. The principal differences are video processing (the BDP-83 adds an ABT2010 video processing chip) and quality of the audio DAC's (BDP-83 uses a higher-quality DAC chip and more robust analog section). For Blu-ray playback (especially when using HDMI output for audio), the differences are minor. For DVD, the ABT2010 makes the BDP-83 one of the best upscaling DVD players you can find at any price (comparable to the DV-983H). Also, the ABT2010 gives the BDP-83 one or two extra tricks, such as a zoom mode that is useful for folks with constant image height front projection setups.

Talking Oppo player

I have been enjoying my special edition player now for several months. I can attest that it provides a noticeably improved picture & sound than my PS3, & it's handling of standard DVD's is the best I've ever seen. I don't even use my PS3 for movies anymore.
It's performance with CDs, & SACDs is superb & involving.
I would recommend this player to anyone. I guess if I ever go the 3D route I can still use my PS3 for that.
A totally satisfying purchase.

Interesting...

Thanks for the link.

I've converted all of my CD's to FLAC files on my main PC and have been playing them through my PS3 using the PS3 Media Streaming program. I'm not totally convinced that windows or the media streaming program is not downgrading them somehow though. I tried playing these files from my BDP-83 but it didn't seem to like the files. It may be an issue with PS3 Media Streaming though and the BDP-83.

I'll have to try these higher quality discs and converting them to DVD-A though. I'm pretty bummed that there are not really that many DVD-A or SACD releases but am happy with the ones I've got so far

Unfortunately, the Oppo doesn't support FLAC, nor ALAC, which is also lossless (I use iTunes to catalog/track my music).

For me, I stream either with iTunes via AirTunes or with my Sonos system, which supports both FLAC and ALAC natively. So, this limitation with my Oppo BDP-83 really hasn't bothered me.

You want to do any adjustments to the tv and none to as little as you can within your Oppo's picture adjustments. It takes a bit to get it right but it's worth it in the end. Make sure you read the manual. It's great at explaining the player. Did you get your tv professionally calibrated or do it yourself?

I'd say it's easiest to calibrate the TV, unless it doesn't allow different settings for each input, i.e. cable, HDMI1, HDMI2, component, composite, etc. If it still doesn't look quite right to you, then tweak it in the Oppo. It's been a year, and I still haven't touched the Oppo settings.

Cool thanks for the info... we calibrated ourselves awhile back and just wanted to be sure we didn't need to do anything with the picture adjustments on the oppo.... the films look and sound a lot better than through the old panasonic bd-30 we were still using .

I had a Panny 55 before it croaked and bought the Oppo 83. It sounded and gave a better picture than the Panny for me too. There seems to be more depth and the picture is smoother and clearer. Have fun with it. You'll be watching a lot of movies over again!

Ip-man 2? My wife comments on how much she loves are setup every time we watch a movie. I used to do that a lot more, but now she's getting into it.

If you haven't already, use the Spears & Munsil calibration disc that came with the Oppo. I highly recommend it as the test patterns are far more accurate than many other discs.

And as others have said, do your adjustments to the TV itself.
