Ciao,

Has anybody taken a look at In the Realm of the Senses? The original DVD was so horrible. I'm curious to see how the Criterion release looks.

I would definitely expect TMWFTE to be a criterion more so than those [even though armageddon is a guilty pleasure of mine]...Are there other criterion movies out there that made any of you think, "really? this? a criterion?"
It doesn't matter how many people think that Salo is a brilliant social commentary, I still find it completely repulsive.

Great to read the review, Pro-B. Another winner all around, thankfully!

The way they presented deleted scenes seems particularly interesting -- surrounding deleted footage in color with the B&W rendition of the final cut. Just a quick question: are those in HD as well?

Really, the only thing that takes brownie points away from your thorough and on-the-money review is the lack of timing and audio/video resolution info in the Extras section. Who can blame you, though.

Another well thought out review, Pro-B. The colors on those screencaps look much better than I could've hoped for on this release.

Hello,

All of the extras as well as the US theatrical trailer are in 1080p (). The interviews are in 1080i. This being said, those of you who end up purchasing the disc, please take the time to read the book(let) Criterion have supplied. It is most informative.

Pro-B,
Your latest review has me even more pumped-up for your forthcoming review of "The Wages Of Fear." Hopefully, we'll see that before the end of the week.

Default Ophuls!

I have The last Emperor, it is great, love the extras but waiting for Ophuls . "Lola Montes"
Released last year in some theatres in the definitive updated version and Criterion did finally release the other Ophuls masterworks..['..Earring of Madame de', La Ronde, etc.]

Fantastic review Pro-B. I will have to rent this when it comes out. Don't know how I feel about the unsimulated sex though. Can anyone comment on it? I mean, does the unsimulated material serve a unique purpose, or is it just for shock value?

If you go back through the posts a few pages (I promise it doesn't take much effort ), you'll find pictures of the clear cases.

I suppose we wouldn't mind seeing about a dozen pics of the new clear cases (and how they look next to both the cardboard Criterions and the regular BD cases) over the next few weeks, from those lucky enough to have them in hand.

I'm very curious to see this Oshima at thirty years' remove, now that all the shock value of seeing people actually engaging in sexual intercourse ought to have lost its shock value. (Myself, I always preferred it to blowing people up -- something I also had to do in my time -- but strangely enough it's the latter that has become an accepted part of mainstream entertainment.)

I always had an inkling that Realm had things to say about the oblique junctures of our erotic selves, but it's been dog's years since I've seen it. And neither am I the giddy teenager I used to be, nor is this the worn-out copy I used to watch, so I'm pretty much stoked for the experience.

Judging by El Beev, Wages look great too. I never saw that film in a print that did it justice. THIS is why we have Blu-ray, ladies and gentlemen.

Seriously -- OPHULS! Yes, Criterion, pretty please.

A week from now, we'll know.

It is very much a political film, just as Pasolini's Salo is. Tony Rayns provides a terrific deconstruction of the film in his commentary that I wholeheartedly agree with - seen out of context, a number of the explicit sex scenes are just that...explicit sex scenes. But, given the socio-political ordinance in Japan at the time when the film was made, and specifically the reversal of the traditional roles the two sexes were (still are) expected to assume, In the Realm of the Senses is far and away from being a porn film. Something a lot of critics, including here in America, loved to argue about during the years.
