All I can say is WOW!!! What an amazing finale!!!

I was stunned by the ending, just like every one has been saying.

The Neil Young cover of Hey Hey My My during the end was just brilliant.

Joe
Sutter always manages to find the perfect music for this show, and especially the finales. Remember the season 2 Stone's cover of "Gimme Shelter"? Brilliant!

Couldn't agree more. Great song, and the tone/sound of the cover was a perfect fit.

After watching it for the 13th time last night, I also realised that he finished it in a way that, if SOA hadn't been renewed for a 4th season -
[Show spoiler]with Chibbs & Opie getting redemption/closure, the truth coming out about Johns death, and Jax becoming exactly what he didn't want him to become
- it actually would have been a perfect finale for the entire show.

You should really spoiler tag that it's kind of a HUGE reveal. The show had been renewed before he even wrote the finale btw.

Spoilers added!

I realise it had been renewed very early in the seasons production, but it still had a very "complete" feel about it. It didn't just wrap up the season, in a sense it has pretty much wrapped up all 3 seasons - as if it was a trilogy.

The 3rd season answered a lot of questions, and the last 2 episodes gave closure to a lot of story-lines & arcs - if by some chance it never went on, or people decided to not watch it anymore, I believe Sutter left the viewers very fulfilled. That was NOT a Soprano's finale!

Oh yeah I see what you are saying. Sutter would never end it like the Sopranos, even if that did have a very final ending, it just took me a second viewing to fully understand what that fading to black represented. But I see what you mean, about it completing a trilogy while still leaving plenty of open story lines for the next chapter.

agreed this season finale did have a 'trilogy' feel to it because it closed so many story arc's...sutter usually leaves a major cliffhanger that he goes right into in the next season (the shield had this too)...

on the other hand i guess the 2nd letter could be considered pretty major...

I wouldn't say major. It was big, but it came as no real surprise. Half way through the first season I'd expected it to have gone down that way - the letter just confirmed it.

ya true it was leaning towards this the whole time but i guess i meant this is one big open story arc that will be continued next season...

I was thinking that this finale
[Show spoiler]might have been one of the most diabolical and surprising plot twists I have ever seen. I never thought for one second the whole club was in on Jax turning rat the whole time, and they planned every move. Just brilliant!!.

Finally got around to the finale!!!! Like everyone else I thought it was amazing. When I saw Unser pulling up towards the end I got this gut feeling
[Show spoiler]but I thought he was going to gun them down and then himself, terminal cancer you know. How it was done was so much better. I was in shock when Opie ordered Stahl into the car and he got in behind her. The 3 round burst from the Uzi was stunning. I was probably watching with my mouth wide open and my dad's behind me clapping and hooting. The way Jimmy got it was good too but dammnit I wanted Stahl dead.
I also agree with those that said it could have wrapped up the series. My dad was in such a good mood after the show. He was smiling and said "they could end the show after that." he'll be happy to hear that they aren't.
Now what the hell am I supposed to watch. Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, and Sons of Anarchy are over.

So long as he doesn't go overboard and write himself in as some kind of prophet - that's like M.Knight level douchiness!

Loved the Bus scene in the finale!
[Show spoiler]Completely tense situation, and Chibs is just chillin' like some excited kid eating a sandwich, drinkin' a poppa, anxious for what's about to happen.

finally got a chance to watch the finale again (work and grad school have been keeping me way too busy)... my opinion hasnt changed... that was amazing... couple thoughts though...

[Show spoiler]

what was with jax leaving his sons rings on his old mans grave.. it seems like it was just a plot device to make us think he had really betrayed the club but, given the way things turned out, i don't see how it makes sense ??

also, i think this was mentioned earlier in the thread but i really hope tara either burns those letters or keeps them to herself for a long while.. if season 4 is driven off of that story line, i feel like it's just going to drop right back into the macbeth formula that the series started with... i think sutter can do better than rehashing old shiz...

at any rate SOA rocks .. cant wait for season 4... i'm probably gonna bang out season 3 again over the holidays since i still have it all recorded...

In my opinion leaving the rings
[Show spoiler]being left behind symbolized him being done with his old man and the words he's let him lead by. Keeping with Hamlet, instead of the ghost of John Teller it was always his words that Jax followed. After learning who he really was it changed his opinion and he saw that he wasn't following the right man, and needed to do things on his own now. Though I do find it crazy that the SO ring was still there days later.

I was the one who mentioned I hope the letters
[Show spoiler]get destroyed. I would like to see the club get some healing after a truly emotional couple of seasons, but this show has always followed Hamlet and McBeth, Sutter has modeled the show in the early seasons after it. At it's core it still is about Jax vs Clay so if they choose to stay that course I will be fine with it. There are still many problems between them, and they where never fully dealt with. To keep the club from completely tearing apart Jax had to choke down his feelings about Clay and Tig and Donna's death, they never fully hashed them out and I think their jail fight was further proof. If they don't continue it in season 4 I for one may be alone here, but I would like to see more exploration of it down the road as it is such a fantastic story line, it may be one of the oldest stories there is, but classics work for a reason.

I agree, but he needs to lay off it for a season or 2. If Season 4 goes straight back to the Clay vs Jax feel, it'll get old, quick.

Sutter always said he has a plan for 7 seasons. That's what I think the final season or 2 should be about -
[Show spoiler]Jax should find those letters, or find out the truth in some other way about what really happened to John, and he goes after Clay and eventually kills him - and at the very end of the 2nd last episode of the final season, racked with guilt an unable to deal with how much Jax hates her - Gemma tops herself!

Booyakasha!
