"FULL SCREEN" is somewhat antiquated. It still refers to DVD'S that are formatted to fit the old almost square TV sets (4:3).

I'm 100% on board with this thread. Who are these directors to tell me what aspect ratio I should be watching my films in? Jerks!
![]() I expect them to bastardize their work to fit my technology! The consumer is always right! And if a new size TV comes out, well they better go back and change their movie dammit! I know that whenever I buy a painting, I cut off any excess to fit the frames I already own! That's the AMERICAN WAY! I also only buy books that fit my existing bookcases. I don't care if your book is the most life-changing, best piece of literature ever written, if it doesn't fit my bookcase it's going straight into the fire! And what's the deal with black and white movies? Who watches that crap? Last time I checked the world is in color people! Stupid directors. Now excuse me while I go watch Nascar and crush empty beer cans on my forehead! USA! USA! USA! ![]() |

Scope films are almost unwatchable on a small 4:3 screen (with, or without cropping, but for different reasons). A 16:9 display does reduce the effect of the bars. If you really don't like black bars at all, a constant height screen is the best solution. |

I would have to agree with the OP
I cant stand the letterbox format. why cant the picture fit the whole screen on ALL movies? maybe it will eventually.. |

but it's as retablo says...it most likely will never be... if anything, they may make newer tvs/technology make it so it stretches or formats it so it won't have to have the bars but still take up the whole tv and doesn't change the intended aspect ratio... here's hoping... ![]() |

I actually think the 1.85 or full screen movies feel a lot better and are more immersive/enjoyable to watch than the blue rays with black bars even if more picture is visible. The objects are much bigger and closeups a lot better this way and it feels more in the movie.

why cant all blue rays just have the option to change it like dvds did?

I mean, if studios were to do this, then I think everyone who has issues with/without black bars would be happy. Those who want the full screen experience can, and those who want specific OAR black bars or not can as well. The thing is that bluray is still a new technology and not as widespread/accepted as DVD. Maybe when it gets as popular/accepted as DVD we may see it... But the whole sell about bluray now (as a new technology) is that they offer the best picture quality out right now; which means they need to offer the best picture aspect ratio wise as well. This is how I see it at least... So yeah, just my 2 cents, and I admit I am not a A/Vphile so I am no expert and these could be generic/simpleton perspective, but "to each their own" right?! |

Please remember that this thread's topic is about the list of movies available made in film formats that have a similar shape to modern TVs so people that prefer those type of movies can find them, not about a discussion of how movies should be viewed.
