I thought I would put some life back into the Energy thread before it falls to page 2 of the forums.
Anyway, just a quick impression of my new Integra 40.3 receiver in case any of you Energy owners out there are considering an upgrade.
Keep in mind that I'm using the Energy RC-10's as my front L/R, and the RC-LCR for center channel, and an old pair of Infinity's for my rears, which by the way have really opened up and sound nice. I never heard sound like this before from these speakers, which says something for the receiver.
The bottom line is that this receiver sounds fantastic with these speakers, given their linear nature. I find the receiver to deliver very clean, clear, detailed, and well balanced sound through my Energy's.
Over the last few days I played several movies including "Black Hawk Down," "Rambo (The latest one)," and "Apocalypse Now." They all sounded excellent, but "Apocalypse Now" sounded a bit pushed in the highs, which at times was border line fatiguing and made me want to turn it down. I went in to the Home menu of the receiver and quickly turned on the Re-EQ, which did subdue the highs a bit, but I noticed that the sound wasn't as full as before so I turned it back off (nothing a fine tuning of the treble couldn't cure I'm sure). Of course this is obviously the source and not the receiver's problem. Over all I am very pleased with this receiver for movies. I have not played much music on this unit yet, only briefly when I first connected it, but what I heard sounded fantastic as well.

That nice to hear, Have you run audissey? Maybe the surround are too loud I don't ever recall Apocalypse now to be that bright or that pushed to me.

Hey Olivier, yes I ran audissey when I first hooked it up. I did do a firmware update a couple of days ago. You think that could have messed with the settings? The manual says that the update shouldn't change any settings.
Come to think of it, ever since I ran audissey, the surrounds are quite loud; almost overpowering the fronts at times. I think you have something there. I'll go into the settings and reduce the volume on the surrounds and see if that helps.

Where did you position the Mic in the room, may sound like a silly question but was it exactly where your ears are?

its been my feeling that audyssey sets the surrounds a little hot, so I went in and turned them down about 1-2 dbs, and I like that a lot better.

Ah, thanks Steve, you confirm my suspicions. I will play with the settings later. Right now I have to take the wife out to buy a microwave. Ours just kicked the bucket half way through preparing supper..

It does seem strange though that Apocalypse Now sounds a little pushed in the highs while others don't sound like that to me. I just figured it was the source and that's the way it was. I will have to revisit that after making adjustments to the rears. Thanks Steve.

One other thing that comes to mind I think Audissey runs with measured amount of db if I am not mistaken and adjust speaker accordingly but test tones are set to run at certain frequencies, since not all speakers respond with the same efficiency at this given frequency I suspect it had to increase the gain on your surrounds to achieve the output you were getting from your fronts which may affect the end result. I am pretty darn sure you would not experience something like that if you had RC-10 all around.

You could use an spl meter also instead of pink noise but as I read here it depends on speakers alot and gain is often adjusted manually after all room correction done by Audissey which is the most important thing it does actrually.

Here is the askaudissey website answer on this and it make sense to lower the volume they are rather small speaker and to achieve same SPL at the pink noise level they had to increase the gain significantly I guess.

Good morning Olivier,

Last night I decreased the volume of the rears by about 3 db and it does seem to blend better with the fronts now, but I could actually lower them a tad more I think. I feel like running audissey again this weekend. Last time I ran it a large dump trunk past in the front of the house during the process. It sounded like it was running through the house LOL. I don't know if it had an affect on the outcome or not, but if I could here it I'm sure the microphone picked it up.

Default Emotiva UPA-2

Manual of Marantz SR5005 states that Pre-Outs can be used as Pre-Amp and can be connected to Power Amp's. Would it help, if i add Emotiva UPA-2 for the Stereo Setup or there would not be much significant step up since Marantz is already 100 wpc and UPA-2 is 125 wpc.

Curerntly AVR is used RC50 and never distorts at whatever level of volume.

I would suggest to rerun audissey and then tweak the surrounds again.

I would have to pay shipping as well as customs duties. So Trial is not an option.

Could you save some more and maybe get the XPA 2, this would be a great amp and the RC-50 would have no problem handling it, you would have plenty of head room and most liklely the sound you are looking for. It'realtively innexpensive for what it's price performance ratio.

I am very affraid it's extremely difficult to find what ytou want for less than 800$ in all honesty. The amp has to be on par with the speakers, the RC-50 retail price was not cheap. I would be more patient and buy something you wont regret.

Hey guys, I ran audissey several times on my 40.3, and watched several movies and I have to be honest and say I think I prefer it turned off. It just seems to loose to much, especially in the lower frequencies. I guess I'm just accustomed to hearing this way. I found myself during the movies switching it off and on over various scenes, and I find that it just takes away to much and leaves the sound rather bland. It especially takes away a lot of the lower frequencies, and it doesn't sound as smooth. I'm having a hard time explaining it, but it just sounds a lot better without it in my humble opinion.

i guess that's why they give you the option of turning it on or off , out of curiosity how many positions are you running audyssey in?

Hey sandman, 3 positions. It's in a small room. I have to say I'm torn, because at times a like it on, and then in certain scenes it's just seems lacking.
Another thing I notice is my sub doesn't sound right with audissey on. It pops and flutters, but with audissey off it sounds nice and smooth and deep. A sub will be my next upgrade, that might be one of my problems.
