Bought The Martian at Walmart, but the wife intercepted the bag and announced she was keeping it for Father's Day.

In memory of the late great Alan Rickman I watched Part 1 Of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows in 3D

I was grateful I was watching it in the dark on a massive plasma TV as it was obvious why this didn't get a theatrical 3D release - the conversion makes no effort to ramp up the WOW factor of the visual effects and the whole film just looks dark and murky as it mirrors the darkness of the plot. There's absolutely no pop-out to speak of and depth is minimal for the most part. A climactic chase is so frenetically edited that there's no way the 3D can even make an impact.

And yet I still much preferred it to the 2D version. The 3D may be mild but it is consistent, and the editing generally allows you plenty of time to look over the sets and scenery. The visual effects don't really pop, often being dark and smoky and always being kept behind the screen, but they do gain a nice sense of dimensionality. Interior shots equally do separate out their consituent elements into a proper 3D space. So while I'd agree that this is not an impressive conversion, I wouldn't say that it was a bad conversion given the limitations of the source material and the filmmakers' ambitions.

I've read interviews that confirmed that the 3D was deliberately kept behind the screen so as not to "take you out of the movie" but to me (and many others) having 3D come out of the screen immerses me in the world of the movie more. I wish the idiots in Hollywood could understand this.

Now comes a movie review which will let you know that I will sit down and watch (or at least try) anything.

Porkchop 3D - This movie appears only to be available direct from the "studio" through Amazon. It comes signed by two people (I am not sure by who because I couldn't read the two signatures). It doesn't appear to be available at Amazon at the moment but it may be because they are pressing more. This comes on a BD-R with a cheap white label with an ink smeared "Porckchop 3D." The case art looks very good and appears they put more time into it than the disc label.

Okay, first things first. I enjoy watching movies that are so bad they are good and I also have a lot of respect for people who go out and try to make movies (especially horror) on a nothing budget and then make it fairly enjoyable to watch. I have several friends who have done this locally and I have even appeared in some movies like this (cameo only...no interest in acting). I was also fun to help with the production and be behind the scenes. So again, my tolerance for movies like this is extremely higher than the average viewer.

I went into this knowing nothing about the Porkchop character and believe it or not, it is a trilogy with at least one spin-off movie. Who knew? The credits at the end state the movie was made with a Sony HDR-TD10 camera, for $3000 and with lots of volunteers. Very impressive.

Okay, on with the film review. The movie actually delivers. It knows what it is and doesn't shy away from it. It has a bunch of tits, a lot of practical gore effects (that are all mostly well done), and lots of smart-aleck kids spouting off wacky dialogue with humor that often will make you laugh out loud...intentionally! And all the kids make decisions that are so non-nonsensical, you wonder how they are even breathing. But more importantly for this review...the 3D. It is actually well done and extremely strong. So strong you may want to grab the barf bag (and not because of the gore).

The director, for whatever reason, decided to shoot half of the movie's scenes in extreme close-up. It is a bizarre choice (if intentional) and doesn't work. It hinders a lot of the 3D because the depth is crazy strong on this. My projector didn't auto detect it so I had to manually choose the "side by side" option (and the movie actually comes with an instruction slip inside to do just that). There are several pop-outs and again, very nice looking depth. The color palette is really bland but I think that was due mostly to the camera. It certainly wasn't a directorial decision since this is obviously a point and click film.

There are times where the framing is atrocious in addition to the close-ups. You can see heavy reflections on the sides of the picture that may wreak havoc on your eyes. But get past a lot of these issues and again, some very nice depth in a lot of it.

Now for the important parts...the tits and gore. Tits are more important to me than gore so let's start with those. This movie has a lot of no-reason nudity (which is my favorite) but the girls range from fours to sevens. Most of the practical gore is extremely well done with several pop-outs pertaining to the kills. There is a ton of graphic language (a lot of it is way over the top) but this is mainly from a couple of actors that can't seem to say a line without a cuss word every second. It doesn't bother me but when I notice it, it may bug some since I am basically immune.

And believe it or not, you get the pleasure of a talking robot in action. Yep. This robot is straight out of Filmation's Space Academy but with more personality and less movement, if you can image that. Where can you find all of the above in one film and in 3D?!?! Only here! Exciting!

Movie - ***1/2 out of ***** (Based upon the budget, tits and gore and all around ridiculousness. It actually earned an extra half star just for a scene when two guys get lost in the woods. Look for it.)

3D - ****1/2 out of ***** (A lot of flaws in the presentation but you have to respect what they were able to accomplish on the cheap. Mr. Director...just please let the camera breath a little. Way to many extreme close-ups.)

Best and most accurately described 3D review of Part 1 Of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows in 3D yet!

Alan Rickman was a great actor and will be missed.

News is, Matt Damon will be back on earth by Father's Day. You might end up watching empty Martian landscapes after Father's Day.

Indeed he was and he will be - I just finished watching Part 2 in 3D, which serves as a more fitting tribute than Part 1

Somehow the 3D made much more of a difference in Part 2 than it did in Part 1. The quality of it wasn't that much better, it was just that maybe it seemed a little brighter due to all the fiery special effects, and deeper thanks to the film returning to the hallways and corridors of Hogwarts.

Other than the extra depth afforded by the sets, it's the SFX scenes that I found really benefitted from the 3D. Some action with a dragon early on is impressive (I could have sworn the dragon's snout broke the screen) as is all the magical mayhem in the second half of the film (though sadly pop-out is relegated to some particle effects right at the end).

But there was one scene I was watching out for because when I first saw it in 2D I thought the effects were abysmally bad. The fire looked fake, the flying on broomsticks looked fake, it was laughable compared to the generally stellar effects work in the rest of the film. I had my suspicions it would play better in 3D but I was amazed how much better it played, it no longer stuck out at all. Maybe some of the foreground objects still looked a little flat in odd shots but the added depth really helped sell the illusion for me and at that point I vowed never to watch this film in 2D ever again.

Sure this could have been a significantly more impressive 3D presentation if pop-out had been better utilised but, like Part 1, it's quite dark visually so I think the conversion does well to make the 3D look relatively natural - it's a conservative conversion that can't be used to showcase the best your 3D TV has to offer, but it's not a bad conversion as far as they go.

^ I thought part 2 was a big improvement over part one, in fact I sold off part 1 as there was no way I wanted to sit through it again wearing glasses when the 3D didn't offer anything for me, I just watch the regular Blu-ray now and part 2 in 3D.

Talking about Alan Rickmans passing, I watched the Martian earlier this evening and David Bowies Starman song came on during it, I found it to be quite a touching moment knowing that he passed away earlier in the week.

For this portion (part 1) of the story, wearing 3D glasses becomes a substantial chore, diminishing the already visually dark and murky atmosphere environments. Only my HMD displays the 3D at the needed originally envisioned 2D brightness levels. It increases visual stimulation for enduring emotional sobering developments.

Watched Jurassic World.

Fun movie, a lot of very nice visuals, but once again a wasted opportunity.

This movie should have been the one that pushed 3D to the limits. The camera work is perfect for extreme 3D(what could have been), due to constant in your face moments. There is no reason to keep it tame here. CGI dinos jump towards viewer, so why not have them right out in living room? Of course there are a couple of moments the action penetrates the screen, but not many and they are not very extreme. If a giant sea monster pops out to eat a huge dino, have that moment right in the viewer's face, why not? It is ridiculous anyway.

This movie is NOT REALISTIC. CGI is already a gimmick, thus one can not use that redundant argument for the tame 3D. Having lots of great pop outs in this WOULD NOT have taken away from the action at all, in fact it would have made it a movie worth watching numerous times just, for the fun of it.

My nephew and niece loved the movie. Neither of them even knew it was in 3D. They constantly asked where is the 3D?

My friend just spent £2900 on a TV, and didn't even bother to get a 3D one. He is done with it, totally dissatisfied. Who came out of cinema saying wow did you see the 3D on that? Did you see that moment that the dinosaur made you jump?

Of course the anally retentative festishists that collect 3D movies for the sake of it will be happy regardless. 3D is supposed to be fun. If it just looks a little nicer than 2D counterpart, what is the point? Is it worth it? Well of course, to the collector, but that is quite sad.

That's it Paul!

This will be the phrase that exemplifies the necessity of viewing content in 3D!

Would like to add that HMDs excel in displaying very strong real-world 3D, with exceptionally strong 3D media sources like 3-D Rarities. An experience of real-world depth and pop-out resolved by the brain's proficiency of fusion, that produces strong parallax illusion as natural to the senses as is produced by electrochemical reactions in the brain.
i.e. No 3D glasses will ever come close to the natural evolution ability of the brain.

Turn whatever 'motion' type settings on your tv to off and that will stop the horrible abnormalities.

For some reason it only happens on certain discs (I think it has something to do with frame rates) my projector also does it.

Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2. The 3d isn't bad, but it is on that you really have to see on a big screen (eg: front projection at home) otherwise 2d is probably going to be better suited as on a small screen the 3d isn't as noticable.

Well, that is basically a "movie" shot on consumer grade camcorders, and has 3D effect applied via a program on their windows XP computer.
No surprise there, for a movie shot for $5 bucks with a potato.

And yet the 3D is more impressive than it is in Avengers Age Of Ultron which had a silly million dollars thrown at it... I'd even go so far as to say that Porkchop 3D has better 3D than Jurassic World. Not bad for a movie shot for $5 bucks with a potato!

I just had Dark Country 3D delivered. It makes me mad that I have to watch it with French subtitles, but it doesn't look like a better release is forthcoming...

I watched The Walk for a second time (showing my Dad) and then The Martian in 3D yesterday. Both are great but hands down The Walk has been the best 3D Experience I have ever had. I am really afraid of heights so that helped but there are so many shots that take your breath away! Highly recommend that movie for a 3D experience.
