I remember many critics pointing out that they thought AotC looked like a video game in their reviews prior to it coming out so...

You extreme fans are nuts regarding the datedness of special effects - the prequels are the complete opposite of the original trilogy. The OT effects are not dated at all but the prequel effects are - in all three prequels, so yes....very video gamey.

I'd say ROTS holds up pretty well. The other two I can agree with.

Since we are well aware this story will take place 30 yrs after the events in Jedi and if the sequel Trilogy will follow the "familiar" formula that we first saw in the original trilogy and in the prequel trilogy is such:

Qui-Gon gets killed in Episode I (his presence is not seen in Ep's II & III) but it's felt to a certain extent to guide Anakin.

Obi-Wan gets killed in Episode IV (his presence is seen and utilized as a mentor to Luke)

Luke gets killed in Episode VII (his presence is seen and utilizes as a mentor to his kids or perhaps Leia & Han's)

or Ford gets his way and Han bites the dust since he wanted to be killed off in Jedi but Lucas nixed the idea because dead character's don't sell toys.

since this movie is in new hands, I really hope that no pattern will be present.

I'd agree that prequel CGI is easily rivaled (and sometimes surpassed) by today's video games, but if you think that the effects from a 2002 game and a 2002 blockbuster are in any way comparable, then you're remembering one of them wrong.

you also discussing the very first film to be shot 100% digitally many seem to forget that part. Look at the very first digital film from 2002 compared to a film shot on digital now.

being the first to be shot 100 percent digitally still is no excuse. 2001 and A New Hope were both firsts too and they both still look good and not dated.

'Star Wars: Episode VII' Speculation Centers on Unknown Oxford Actress

"One of the roles yet to be filled is that of a young black or mixed-race woman who may be a descendent of Jedi Knight Ben Kenobi."

All this talk about Obi-Wan's grandchild could be a cover up, she might be Mace Windu's descendant, with some twist to her intentions.

Yeahhh, I still wouldn't say that. Granted, like someone else said, tech from a decade ago to now you can see a difference if the millions are thrown around and the company does it just right. Personally I don't like overused CGI in films, just the right blend between traditional props and effects with CGI superimposed via motion capture or some green screens is about right to get the realistic look and feeling without going overboard into realistically "bad" mode.

I don't mind this girl being in the film as a lead, but does she have to be the daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi, really? Obi-Wan shouldn't have any kids.

Yes, especially those boxes that you can see around the ships when they're flying through space, they don't look dated at all

Do you all take your opinions from the same trough? Harrison Ford said the line about there being no future in dead Han Solo toys. Be original or be quiet.

Fact is, Lucas wanted a happy ending to the saga and that meant having all three main characters surviving to the end. Kasdan didn't agree but, ultimately, it's not his story; he's just a tool that's used to assist Lucas in realising his vision (not knocking the guy - he's a top bloke - but that's how it works).

Why are we "extreme" because we don't happen to agree with you?

You claim the effects from those older episodes aren't dated. I do wonder when you last watched them, in that case.

I agree. Having long lost grandchildren of the Jedi from the prequels showing up all over the place goes against the grain and robs Anakin's story of some of its impact - Anakin being the one who went against the code, giving in to attachment. Then again, if these new films are some sort of apologetic love note to the OT fans, I would imagine they'll debunk anything that was established in the prequels.

I would hope so. it wasn't till Lucas went off his OCD meds and created the prequels that we even HAD this whole cellibate, you can't love anyone, jedi order. Obi wan calmly tells Luke in "A new hope' that anakins blue saber was "his father's light saber" and that his father was a jedi knight.. there was no big "whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???!! !!" about how his father could have no children for Jedi couldn't marry, mate etc.... that was bull crap that lucas created decades later and screwed the timeline from here to hell and back with his POS prequels.
