There's legitimate reasons, and then there's this "culture war" nonsense stuff pushed by people wanting click$. The legitimate stuff amounts to things like their clunky streaming service and apps which they refuse to improve, the way they handle their streaming softsubs (it's really bad), the way they handle their typesetting on their releases (it's stuck in the past and needs to be more like what Crunchyroll, Sentai, and modern fansubs use), how they handle their credits (they translate them rather than leaving them alone and rolling the translated ones afterwards, but unlike others who did that, they put the English cast and staff first rather than the original Japanese cast and staff), inconsistency between releases (they're the kings of inconsistency, you can quite literally write an entire book about it), bungling every Dragon Ball release combined with PR disasters surrounding them, shoving certain issues with releases under the rug and blaming fans' equipment (Ex: Serial Experiments Lain banding, Steins;Gate banding, Dragon Ball Z cropping (yes, they denied ever cropping it in the past)), the Escaflowne Kickstarter (was poorly handled, rewards had issues, and wasn't really needed given how big of a seller Escaflowne was in the past (one of Bandai's top 5 all-time best-sellers which led to Geneon overpaying for Heat Guy J which had some of the same staff) and still is to this day), issues with how the subscriptions for their streaming service work, issues with their shop, video quality issues, region-locking their entire website rather than just the videos (note how the following announcement couldn't be read by the people it applied to)...

Then you've got the worry of monopilization following the buyout of Crunchyroll, nobody likes monopolies, and there will be negative effects. For instance, AnimeLab in Australia and New Zealand shut down in favor of FUNimation's inferior streaming service. Crunchyroll which is also viewed as being superior to FUNimation's service could be shut down and folded into FUNimation instead, where people won't know what basic softsubs are, and where you have to hold "shift" to move backwards or forwards rather than just simply hitting the left or right arrows...

For the "culture war" stuff, you've got the controversies with many dubs for having "SJW" stuff, and people thinking this spills into the translations, and many viewing dubs as translations when that's not what dubs are to begin with, hence why nobody uses dubtitles on purpose unless they want the ire of fans. Then there was them dropping Interspecies Reviewers because of "standards" despite releasing a show like Dance in the Vampire Bund uncut after backlash, people thinking FUNimation had control over what masters they received for Tamayomi (I wish I was joking..., ah the lack of knowing how anime production works, though these sorts of people only care about quick click$), the Vic controversy, the Kaguya-sama S2 line which was Aniplex USA's fault, not FUNi's (note the following ignorant comments), and the list goes on.

Also, there's been certain questionable social media posts which later got deleted.

Keep in mind there's 3 different releases, there's the FUNimation Parts (10 discs across 5 releases), the Collections (8 discs across 2 releases), and then the Aniplex USA Blu-rays. The FUNimation Parts it should be noted were released back when FUNimation used a not very good font with thin outlines that led to subs being harder to read in many instances, leading to complaints that caused them to change how they do their Blu-ray subs in late 2012.

^^^

The legitimate stuff that BoA posted is why we have issues with Funimation. I mean they bring something to the table but sometimes I feel that they think that since they are one of the main distributors of anime they are infallible.

The translated credit thing drives me up a wall. I hate it so much lol.

And don't get me started on their website/app. Calling it garbage is an insult to trash.

I was thinking of canceling the funimation app subscription, its hot garbage.

Does Crunchyroll have same day releases for JoJo, MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer?

Apparently Eva aired on a PBS affiliate subbed along time ago before it aired on Cartoon Network? That's crazy to learn.

The Demon Slayer Compilation TV Specials/Films and Mugen Train are currently exclusive to Funimation in terms of streaming. Season 2 is confirmed for Funimation, but not confirmed for Crunchyroll yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if Demon Slayer S2 is simulcasted on Crunchyroll either same day or on a one/two week delay (similar to how Puella Magi Side Story S2 is delayed on Crunchyroll), given that Demon Slayer S2 is highly anticipated.

I believe MHA is released same day on Crunchyroll and Jujutsu Kaisen was released on Crunchyroll same day during its 1st season.

I remember a Bay Area PBS affiliate aired Ranma 1/2 subbed during pledge drive season when I was visiting San Jose.

Why is the CE of Evangelion listed as a "Right Stuf exclusive" when it's also for sale from Shout Factory and GKIDS itself?

No different from any Aniplex set really. I can't imagine any of the regulars around here complaining about the pricing on the NGE CE. In fact, $175 for 779 minutes is cheaper than most shows Aniplex offers. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Plus they didn't lock the old dub behind purchasing the UE.

The FUNimation Rebuild releases will also remain high if they too have the original dub locked behind an expensive and limited release if that happens.

It's funny coming back on here after being away for 10 days and reading this insistent speculation over scalping while the CE still remains in stock. lol

I wonder how many copies were available today?

I'd emailed a few weeks ago after it first sold out and they were checking orders then to see if they had any duplicate customers, etc., so I'm assuming the ones they released today for order was a result of that check.

I wound up getting one too. Had to keep refreshing though, the button didn't show up for a few minutes. It was all gone by the time I finished the order lol. I'm surprised, I usually don't have much luck with things like this.

Ah yeah, def sounds like there's been some issues then. Streaming stuff doesn't really affect me though. I've never used Funi streaming. I had Crunchyroll and AnimeLab paid memberships for quite a while, but been some time since then. But yeah, that stuff sounds like a pain for those that use them.

Physical release issues though annoy me. As a Dragon Ball fan that has bought a lot of different releases, it is very annoying. So glad I got the Dragon Boxes back in 2013 when most of them were still reasonably priced (one was still expensive though).

Are there many major video flaws in their blurays though?
Though I don't really have many funi blurays, mostly madman releases. Idk if they're the same essentially though or not. My FMA:Brotherhood blurays are the original 5 part releases (australian ones) and I never had trouble reading the subs though.

The whole Sony anime monopoly thing I've never been sure about. So, Sony bought Funimation and Crunchroll right, Madman was acquired by Aniplex, which is part of Sony Music though? So, idk if there's much separation there or not, like they're in a different branch of Sony or something.

Because they are the only retailer that's not directly connected to the license which gets to sell the CE. In contrast, GKIDS is obviously the licensee while Shout Factory has been GKIDS' physical media distribution partner for several years. As such, they "don't count" for the purposes of Right Stuf's proclamation.

It's kinda like the phrase "Console Exclusive" in which only a partial exclusivity is established.

Umm... okay.

I just presumed (as, I think, most consumers would) that when they say "exclusive" it means they're the only place around that we can buy the thing.

That said, they still might be the cheapest, if Shout and GKIDS charge shipping.
