I'm very surprised with a few of the opening point spreads.

LSU favored over Alabama by 2

Clemson vs. West Virginia pick'em - Tempted to put some money on Clemson. I thought they'd be favored by a decent margin.

Michigan favored over Virginia Tech by 1 - Seems way too low. Michigan should win by at least a TD or two.

Oregon favored over Wisconsin by 4.5 - I'd take Oregon easily.

Well, as time goes, and betting picks up, you'll see the point spread start to open up.

Everyone else had a try all season long to win their games: they failed. Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma State, etc. etc. It counts, I promise. But all this shows that, once again, we need a playoff so badly.

Are you also the one who was talking about the SEC's out-of-conference games? LSU opened with Oregon; Georgia opened with Boise State. LSU then beat West Virginia, Georgia beat Georgia Tech, Florida played Florida State, South Carolina beat Clemson, Alabama played Penn State, Auburn played Clemson, and there are other games here or there. On average, yes, each SEC team plays 2 scrubs.

Who is your team? What conference do you cheer for?

It's all cyclical anyway. I remember when I was in college in the 90s I thought the Big 12, Big 10, and Miami got far too much credit. Heck, it wasn't long ago that an undefeated Auburn was shut out of the national championship game in favor of Big 12 and Big 10 teams I believe. Sometime soon the SEC will be a doormat, then in 10 years it'll change again.

Just saying that on that play several obvious flags should have been thrown. Early in the first half an LSU player hit a Georgia player after the play and that wasn't called either.

Bottom line is LSU beat us.
Yeah, LSU definitely won easily, but the refs still have to call a complete and accurate game. Not sure they did, but they certainly didn't try to give LSU the game. It would've made no sense: if UGA won, the SEC would've had 3 teams in BCS games instead of just 2.

No, it DOESN'T Count. What exactly did the LSU loss do to Alabama's chances at a national title? Why, made them _better_, naturally.

And I'm still of the belief that the Ok State Iowa State game was heavily influenced by the tragedy. Listen to accounts of people who were there. Oklahoma state had no enthusiasm for the game, and even while winning were out of it.

I clearly was not talking about LSU. LSU clearly deserves to be there. I was railing on the rest of the conference.

Georgia lost to Boise State. Georgia Tech is not a major win. Florida lost to Florida State. Auburn lost to Clemson. I already commented on Penn State.

I will grant you I missed South Carolina beating Clemson.

No there _aren't_ "other games here or there".

Outside of LSU the SEC had nothing going for it. The SEC regressed to the pack this year.

I suppose you think this matters. I'm a fan of the sport. And the blatant SEC favoritism does not help college football.

I will grant you this. It's cyclical. Every few years who gets the blatant favoritism changes. But no conference has ever got the rematch before, which takes it to a whole new level.

*EDIT* I would think a fan of the SEC would want to go to two separate bowls and just trounce teams from two other conferences, thus demonstrating just how superior they are.

You kind of have a nasty tone in your responses, which I don't think was warranted. I'm not a fan of the SEC; I'm a fan and graduate of Georgia, who happens to be in the SEC. Further, I don't feel the need for the SEC to demonstrate their superiority since, as I said, it's all cyclical anyway. I've been following college football long enough to know that. I like certain teams in the Big 10, ACC, and Pac 10, and would cheer for such teams against a SEC opponent that does not make its home in Athens. (Of course, I dislike teams from those conferences, too, usually due to their fans)

I already agreed with you about Oklahoma State, by the way.

Suffice to say our opinions differ greatly; I'll just try to express mine in a more respectful manner.

Oh, the reason I asked what team you cheer for is that I like to know what fans of certain programs think. Does it "matter"? Of course not. No more than anything else in this thread.

I can't remember the last time I didn't watch a "championship" game but I won't be watching this rematch crap.

Corso the BCS and Corso the SEC ass-kissers at ESPN.

On Saturday, the Gameday crew was saying how the current system isn't working and how badly we need a playoff system.

Yeah, Herbstreit clearly has no love for the SEC, and Corso rarely does either. They're both Big 10 guys.

I don't care about a rematch or not, I just want whatever creates more chaos and ultimately leads to the dismantling of the BCS system. If that somehow means Alabama v. LSU, I support it. Whatever brings change.

Herbstreit was whoring himself out big time last night in trying to justify and make excuses for the BCS system and the Alabama-LSU re-match.

No justifications needed. Both teams had a 11-1 record. Both teams beat 4 top 25 teams. The BIG difference was that Bama's loss was a 3 pt loss in overtime to the undisputed #1 team in the nation, and OK ST's was handed to them by an unranked team. I don't buy the whole their head wasn't in it excuse. The ability to keep your head in the game despite exigent circumstances is something that a #1 team should have.

I think everyone agrees a playoff system is needed, but there definitely should NOT be a rule that a team needs to win their conference championship in order to get into the title game. Just look at what happened this year with the top three teams at one point late in the season being not only from the same conference... but the same DIVISION.

Also to those saying that they've already seen that game... it will be a boring replay of the first... yada yada.... I wouldn't count on it. Both teams will take a hard look at what went wrong for them in the first game and make adjustments. I think a rematch will be very interesting just to see what each team does differently. Not to mention... Saban has only lost to the same coach consecutively twice in his entire career.

There are other numbers that matter.

Strength of schedule:
Oklahoma St. - 6th toughest in the nation
Alabama - 35th toughest in the nation

Wins over BCS schools with a winning record:
Oklahoma St. - Texas, Missouri, Baylor, Kansas St., Oklahoma
Alabama - Penn St., Auburn, Arkansas

And I do agree that Oklahoma St. should have beaten Iowa St. That being said OK St. and Alabama both lost games they should have won. Alabama lost to LSU in a home game. Difference is Oklahoma St. has a better resume at the end of the season. That's why I would have voted them in over Alabama, despite my own pro-SEC leanings. In the end it won't matter though as both Alabama or Oklahoma St. would have lost the national title game to LSU.

That remains to be seen yet. Stat wise... AL had it all over LSU in that game. If they can make sure it doesn't come down to a kicking match again, they stand a very strong chance of beating them in the championship game.

Petersen's frustration is well stated in this article, I think.

BCS needs to go bye-bye yesterday.

He should be scouting kickers and learning to beat teams other than Vtech (but, I agree)

There really doesn't seem to be a consensus or even a frontrunner. I don't think anyone believes Montee Ball or Tyrann Mathieu has a chance. I could see Luck, Griffin, or Richardson winning. If the award was MVP I could go with Luck or RG3 because they were each probably worth an extra 4 wins to their teams whereas Alabama probably could have had the same record without Richardson but it's an award for the best player. RG3 could be hurt by the fact that he's the only player not playing in a BCS bowl and over time the award has gone to the best player on a top team. I see this being a very close vote and won't be surprised by Luck, RG3, or Richardson winning.

Good question - I really don't know and I guess I really don't care this year. None of the "finalists" excite me too much, except that kid from LSU, but I know he won't win it.
